Just wanted to thank Todd Zircher for sharing McRandom NPCs (Future) with me. I would have thanked him in the thread, but I can't seem to find where he mentioned it; this community is way too active for me to find the older post.
I'm gonna be using it in my new D6 Star Wars solo campaign that I'm starting in order to test out some house rules that I wrote up a year ago, but haven't been able to find a reliable group to test them with. I'm also exploring a character template type that I normally wouldn't, so it should be a fun exercise!
You know, despite never being that much of a Star Wars fan, I always enjoyed the D6 rules for it.
ReplyDeleteSeems like it'd make a great solo game too.
What's your character?
He's a disgraced dark apprentice. It was a template in a fanbook written by James Spahn.
ReplyDeleteI'll quote the background bit:
"You were discovered by one of Lord Vader's Inquisitors a few years ago and through their harsh training and your desire to amass more power your eyes were opened to the ways of the Dark Side of the Force. But you were deemed a waste, not worthy the Empire or your master's time. You barely escaped your former master's attempt to end your life and spent time on the run, just like a pathetic Jedi. But you'll show Lord Vader and his cronies. You have the will and the untapped power to become a Dark Lord of the Sith, and you'll show the Emperor himself the true strength of your power. For now you're working with the Rebel Alliance, for the enemy of your enemy is your ally – for now."
I'm currently running him through one of the old Instant Adventures called "New Recruits and Rebel Guns" for his initiation into the Rebellion. I'm about 12 pages in: on scene 3 of 4.
I've been rolling randomly (to keep my own heroic preference in check) whenever he interacts with someone to see if he says something reasonable or acceptable, or if he's an arrogant bastard who pisses people off. Thus far, he's alienated his would-be crew, even after going to great effort saving the pilot's life.
I'm hoping that the character will eventually come to be a productive member of the rebellion, not just someone using them to his own ends. But, we're still early on, at least the character has managed to resist the urge to use his lightsaber to cut people to ribbons.
Nice, that could totally go both ways :)
ReplyDeleteIt could. This is only my second game which has made it past character creation. So I'm still getting used to the feel of solo games, but I'm trying for a more traditional campaign this time to see how far I can take it. My last game, while fun, puttered out after about 5 chapters and roughly 53 pages of gameplay. I'm hoping to pick it back up again, but the game was decidedly lacking in the mysticism which really gives the Star Wars feel.
ReplyDeleteA topic you're passionate about probably improves the longevity 100% :)
ReplyDeleteTHough I think an abandoned game isn't necessarily a failure. Some ideas turn out to be only be good for a short story.
That's true. I think that going from having group play campaigns that stretch on for years to having something which depends entirely on me and my creativity has been a struggle. I really enjoy solo gaming. I like being able to explore characters that sometimes don't mesh well in a group dynamic, without having to rub it in someone else's face. I've also been using this as an opportunity to explore the awesome pre-made adventures done by WEG's writing team.
ReplyDeleteAs a player, and as a GM, I never played in a traditional rebel group. 15 years, and most of my campaigns were of criminals, or Jedi post Endor, just because that's what the players wanted.
Todd Zircher is a very active and super informative member of the Lone Wolf Roleplaying community. I enjoy his insights, opinions, and items he shares with us. I too am thankful he posts here. Thank you Todd Zircher.
ReplyDeleteAs a side note, five chapters is a pretty good run. I've been in plenty of face to face games that didn't last that long.
ReplyDeleteSo have I, Todd Zircher, but I had plans running quite a ways into the future, which is why I'm not able to give up the story just yet.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words one and all. We all have our passions and I'm glad we have a space like this to share them in.
ReplyDeleteCould you link me to McRandom NPCs (Future)? I can't seem to find it.
ReplyDeleteHere ya go...
ReplyDeletedocs.google.com - McRandom NPC (future)
Todd Zircher I see you replied and linked something, but it seems like the comment got deleted. Mind linking it again?

ReplyDeleteSorry it took a bit for me to get back to you. I saved a copy in my drive:
docs.google.com - Copy of McRandom NPC (future)
I found that the easiest way to run it is to save it to your computer as an Excel file, then you just have to hit F9 to generate a new NPC each time, or you can use your web browser's refresh button to get a new roll on the tables.
