Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!

Just a precaution, if you want to play Dread using those rules I made for using the Fate Chart instead, I'd advise against it, as you can see in this Actual Play.

Glendal Lorg in the City, Scene 2 of my solo Urban Adventure from Scarlet Heroes, is up for your reading pleasure. It's a short Scene, but Glendal finds out some crucial information regarding his foe Dassadal Ul's plans to steal.... Well, you'll just have to read it for yourself!

I am thinking of doing Nanowrimo with a solo rpg tool. the only thing I can think of is Oculus and its brethren D12 version (the only system that I can think of where the rules do not get in the way of writing Kerouac style). Anyone else think of a Nano writing strategy that connects intense fast writing and rpg fuel?

Ideas- 5 days to go, I think

this game only requires some d6, paper and pencils. socializing is required, of course.

Is there anything out there for procedurally generating the history of a game world?

Is there anything out there for procedurally generating the history of a game world?
Go through the passage of history and roll up great powers as they arise, gain power, fight each other and collapse, to map out how a world came to be the way it is today?

I want something with dice and paper I should add, not a computer program :)

So what do you guys use for solo RPGing?

So what do you guys use for solo RPGing?

A published system? Something written specifically for solo gaming (like Mythic)? Something you cooked up yourself?

Do you prefer games with lots of random encounter tables and the likes?
Do you run published adventures?

I've finally been doing a some actual play testing of a little game I've been making. I guess at this point it's about roleplaying a snapshot of an entire fantasy realm rather than roleplaying specific characters within that realm. But my next goal is to take the snapshots produced with this ruleset and design rules for role-playing adventures.

Anyways, here are my first couple play tests of the "world mode". The resulting realm descriptions are basically like reading the tea leaves of the map generated by the rules, which is surprisingly easy since all elements are spatially related.

In view of SGAM2016, I have been reading a lot of stuff. In particular, I found out a very small niche of story-telling games with miniatures. Some are related with "the Matrix game" by Chris Engle.

In view of SGAM2016, I have been reading a lot of stuff. In particular, I found out a very small niche of story-telling games with miniatures. Some are related with "the Matrix game" by Chris Engle.

I have also been reading WarStory by Ivan Sorensen, something just one step closer to a typical skirmish game.

Also Archipelago and Storyleaves recently came up in G+ conversations. There's a mini-based version of Archipelago (a Grail Epoch), and Storyleaves (almost) is a solo-Archipelago. So one could think of a Storyleaves with miniatures.

Too much stuff to try, but everything is very interesting :)

Archipelago III (mentioned by Tina Trillitzsch):

Storyleaves (mentioned by Bobbi Blackcat):

There are a number of links about Chris Engle's Matrix Games, but I don't know if there is an official set of rules.

This page describes a version which includes "shadows". A shadow is something like a "blind" that can resolve into anything You may use a shadow to make up new locations, characters, and shadows as needed. I find this concept intriguing.

And now, we return to... a rather unique RPG. Less a game and more a writing exercise for me.

A GRAIL EPOCH

A GRAIL EPOCH
by Rafael Chandler

An Archipelago-based story game with miniatures!

Something I could be interested in trying solo.... Archipelago comes with great sets of inspiring and generic cards to help move the story forward.... and you draw a map as you play!

E.g. Haunted by the Past!
Something the character has done previously has consequences in the present. Tell the gamemaster what you think this card means.

CROWDSOURCE PROJECT!

Remember Barbarian Prince? Sure you do! Here's the map. It's free to download on the Dwarfstar Games website, located here:
http://dwarfstar.brainiac.com/ds_barbarianprince.html

The map is still under copyright by Dwarfstar Games, so go grab a copy for yourself.

Man, that map is perfect for an old school sandbox!

Time for a crowdsourced project!

I've uploaded a Google Sheet with a list of all the numbered hexes, the terrain, and any special features.

Your job is to fill in an encounter for each hex. Please fill in your contact info and a link to your social media account of choice.

I'll leave the sheet up or maybe we could ask Ramanan S to turn it into an awesome website like the Hexenbracken.

Here's the link to the Google Sheet:

What makes a RPG particularly useful for a Solo game? In the past, I've gone with ones that I'm particularly familiar with, so I can play them with minimal fuss. However, for new ones, what elements do you look for that really make them "sing" in a Solo session. What works for a standard group, but doesn't for Solo, and vice versa?

Which "generic" or "universal" systems do you all think are best for solo play? Or at least your favorite. GURPS, FATE, BRP, MiniD6, Savage Worlds...something else?

Stuff is moving slow as of late as I found myself disenchanted by 1974 Style. I still like it, but I also learned that by trying to hard to bolt more stuff to the game that at some point, one must look at themselves and say: "Maybe instead of trying to make a simple game complex, you should move up to a slightly more complex game."

I still like it, but I also learned that by trying to hard to bolt more stuff to the game that at some point, one must look at themselves and say: "Maybe instead of trying to make a simple game complex, you should move up to a slightly more complex game."

So, now I've got a newish system on my mind to work with: Mini Six / Open D6.

Well, so much for waiting. My muse sneaked up behind me and whacked me with a creative urge. One of the things I was going to do for #SGAM2016 was write another tale inspired by Zero Tarot. So, a fortnight early I present a little random story I call, A Fool by Any Name for your amusement/inspiration.

Just found this Google+ group as I was researching my own solo RPG design, and have been getting drunk on the wealth of ideas being tossed around. Really great stuff and glad I found this place.

I've been chipping away at a solo fantasy-themed game design for quite some time, trying to get a handle on what it is I'm trying to build by defining exactly what it is I want to play. I'm now moving forward with actual prototyping. I only have a couple of the six game systems prototyped at this point. But my play testing is starting feel "fun". I'm loosely documenting my design process at the link below, and I plan to post some actual play sessions once I've got all of the systems prototyped. Anyways, this seemed like the right place to share such a blog.

Has anyone else ran a solo session of ALONe

Has anyone else ran a solo session of ALONe

using the Game Masters Apprentice cards? I just got the cards in the mail this last week and I've run a short session to get use to the cards and the basics of the system but I feel like I could be utilizing the cards more effectively.

I suppose its just me not knowing the engine that well, but so far I've absolutely loved it and wanted to see what other systems people have used with the GMA cards, or if you've used the ALONe engine and had tips/ideas.

I'm planning on adding text/statistics to each of these entries and write up a separate attack methodology table over the next few days.

I would like to know whether submissions about solo boardgames and wargames are appropriate for this community or not.

Thanks for your time!

So a new pack of OUAT cards came out and I decided to play with them as perhaps one of my darker characters yet.

I think this is the first time I ever solo roleplayed a game and the end result was me being unnerved by it.

I think this is the first time I ever solo roleplayed a game and the end result was me being unnerved by it.

It's going to be put up next month, but the gist of it is that I fought against an army who was eventually revealed to be pyromaniacs who mostly went out by burning themselves and everyone around them to death. That actually creeped me out.
