I have a question for the group:

I have a question for the group:

When you are choosing a storyline to play, how much planning do you do? Do you choose a starting point and see where it takes you? Work out a series of places you want to visit and adventures that it would be fun to experience? Adapt somebody else's scenarios?

The characters get a, perhaps final, night of peace. Without the violence and chaos of their new world, what fresh hells will they discover for themselves?

Question for the group--how did you first find out about Solo Roleplaying, and what led you to this group?

My answer--I was going to run a Pendragon campaign, and was reading a blog that recapped the game, which was run with just one player and the GM. The GM used the word "solo," which got me interested in single player games. Googling Solo RPG, I found this group. At first, I had no idea what to make of the idea, and it took me awhile to come around to the concept.

What about you?

(This was inspired a bit by Todd Maudlin's comment on this group crossing the 1000 member threshold. Which got me wondering on who the new members were, and what brought them here.)

Question. In another thread I saw a comment about false starts and how some character weren't as interesting as their controller had hoped. It led me to thinking about how much someone is focused on the end product when playing. That is when gaming solo, how much of your enjoyment comes from the ephemeral process of play and how much comes from crafting a final narrative? (Give me percentages in order with your comments: 70/30 would mean 70% ephemeral, 30% final narrative.)

What is the role of the GM in solo role-playing?

I’ve been thinking about that in the last few days and I don’t have an answer yet.

First, we need to understand what a role-playing game is, what the players do and what the Game Master (GM) does.
Let’s steal some definitions from The Angry GM [1]:

"A role-playing game is a game in which players take on the role of fictional characters in a hypothetical universe. The players attempt to make the decisions that they feel their characters would make if they were real and if their universe were real. Those decisions are based on the characters’ motivations and the game’s goals. The results of those decisions are played out and new decisions are made.

Ultimately, an RPG is about choice and consequence. The players make choices for their characters and then deal with the consequences. And goals provide benchmarks for success and failure."

So, that’s what an RPG is and what the players do.

Then the GM is the one responsible for facilitating this experience – at least in traditional games. We’re not talking about story-games where we might have a rotating GM.

In solo gaming, we use GM Emulators. But in some way, these falls short. Because no engine can replace a human Game Master. The mechanics of a GM Emulator force the solo player to steer the game into a direction he might not have chosen himself. At its core, the engine provides abstract mechanisms for what a real GM could do. It offers a framework for interpreting game events, for building the game, for NPCs and NPC reactions, etc.
Yet it fails to stand on its own, it always needs interpretation by a human.
What does “Mythic Event Meaning: Intolerance Exotic Suffering” even mean?

So, is that really a “GM Emulator” at all? I often switch hats. As a solo player, I make decisions like a player in a normal game. Then I need to put on my GM hat, use my solo engine and come up with interpretations on what the solo engine tells me. Then I switch back to player mode.

I have no conclusion here.

Thoughts? What am I overlooking?

No T&T Fallout, but here is a quick battle in T&T Wasteland 2!

I was bummed that the developers killed off Ertan at the end of Wasteland 2, because I actually like that he brought a /completely/ different character concept to the game. What I mean is Ertan is a character that isn't initially a badass cowboy in the post-apocalyptic desert.

I also thought, "at this point in the game /how/ would one Gila Monitor even take him down either??" So, I wrote up a quick gila monitor and not surprisingly it didn't make it past the first round! Here's the very quick battle report, enjoy~ :)

Me and a small group of friends have always enjoyed what we call "multi-player novel", where we trade posts back and forth in a collaborative story. World vs Hero adds some very nice mechanics and structure to that. I finished my first solo game (which I've linked before, but will link below again) and am currently working on another game with a friend. I'll post some of it here when we have more to show.

Hey! So, I've got a question for you Fine Folk: how do you usually go about controlling the opposition in combat? So far the two methods I've been using were:

1) "Press X to Hit the Protagonist" - when playing a highly abstract and open ended system, such as Fate, I would just have the opposition make the basic attack over and over again. Lack of more complicated manouvers would be compensated for by slightly increasing the monster's stats.

2) "Just ask" - If playing something more crunchy, I would usually ask about what action makes the most sense. "The Flame Oracle just wolloped the dragon for a quarter of it's hit points, that's the character it's probably going to focus on. [Roll for it] Ok, and since there are other PCs in range and it has it's breath weapon available, it's likely to use that too [Roll for it]". Even in that system I would usually use more abstract rules for things like positioning, using either Fate-like zones, or again, asking questions (" Is the dragon so far away that the Oracle can't see it because of her curse?"). The problem here is that, particularly in case of high level Casters, there can be na abundance of options available, and thus a problem with prioritizing them. Not to mention the temptation to "Ask the right question" when suddenly it's your protagonist's life that's on the line.

How about you people? What's the method you've been using to decide what the mooks/BBEGs do?

"The subject would be playing Dungeon World in solo mode (bad idea? what tweaks does it need? how do specific things like monster moves work in solo play? Etc.) Also solo play in general. I have questions about director vs. protagonist viewpoints, solo or party characters, best GM emulators, and so on."

What would you want to see discussed?
Perhaps we can win more solo gamers with this, so what should I address?

Can anyone recommend a good system for simple dungeon creation on the fly for 5E? Not a huge fan of donjon and the like since I see the entire thing. My preference is a simplified version of what is in the DMG that would let me roll and explain the situation of the room so that I can let Mythic fill in the gaps along with some random encounter rolls that can be done separately.

The Coterie realizes that they can't keep going it completely alone, and make the first brief contact with others in their, now former lives. And they finally start making vague progress, instead of relying on violent reaction for survival.

Our Last Best Hope - The Killer Asteroid - Act 1 / Scene 2

This was played using a Javascript "oracle" (basically a GM "emulator") that incorporates some text generation/parsing techniques.

In this case, I've fed it four different asteroid/comet disaster movie scripts that act as the "voice" of each of the characters. Hema has "Meteor", Catherine has "Asteroid", MIMIC has "Armageddon" and Brett has "Deep Impact."

It took a bit of time to get into the groove because there is a certain tension between what the the prompt cards in OLBH want you to say for dice bonuses and what the parsed text from the movie scripts want you to say. In some cases, I had to dig deeper into the parsed results and sort of cherry pick the words, but in other cases I just went with what the text suggested, and it worked out great (for my tastes anyway).

The way I'm setting the "oracle" odds of something being true is by estimating the ratio of words from the parser vs those I just used without the parser's help. Parser generated words that I used are between brackets "[]". Anything following a character's name like so ("Bret: blah blah [blah] blah.") is dialogue said by that character.

Question for the group. As I play 4AD I find I really want to add content to the room that I generate. Do any one have a generic room type/content table. As an example I roll a square room in 4AD, and I can roll to see what monsters are in the room, but is this a bed room, and office, a kitchen, is it neat, is it a mess? Does this make sense

Just had a bash at "Tales of the Arabian Nights" board game , which was quite a nice role play experience ,i think this game could be expanded into a more formal RPG using other rpg systems , and with that i finished the game as a "Crippled" "Werewolf" who's final destiny was to become a "Sultan" , bit of a strange one but it was quite fun getting there.

A new release of my GME/random table tool, the main notable feature is the inclusion of the question engine from Scarlet Heroes.

Originally shared by Mike Overbo

I have another new release of the tool I use for GM emulation and random tables/oracles -- RanDM Solo is up to v0.9.2. The only notable additions for this minor release:

* the quashing of a foul math problem error when using mythic and achieving "exceptional no" results that resulted in too many "no" results being exceptional.
* the addition of the solo question engine from Scarlet Heroes
* splitting off the development stuff into a separate page
* reorganizing and revising the help text.
* defaulting to the local DB save and load using localforage

the main known bug that I'm aware of is the auto-loading of local browser save results in a bunch of sections reading "undefined" after the first load, though that's a fairly long-standing bug. Offline app / tablet functionality appears to work fine.

So as it stands, I have a total of 4 GME engines to choose from - Mythic, CRGE, CRGE-Kai, and Scarlet Heroes.

I am considering RNDing a map or two a month to release as a free download to get a wider range of maps. I am interested in community-supplied maps, and am also looking for cartographers who allow their maps to be distributed. I don't intend for them to go into a zine, so they can be non-commercial (but I will still check with the creators). Any takers? Any suggestions?

I'll start a list:
