#SGAM2017 Remember Tomorrow - AIWA Entertainment - Intro

The last intro scene, and my last entry for this year's Solo Gaming Appreciation Month!

Part VII of my LotFP historical campaign is up.

At the very end of the post I've appended a scan of my time&location tracking sheet, in case you're wondering how I kept track of this mess. Whilst I was doing this I realised that one of the things that solo gaming does better than social is splitting the party, because no one has to sit around getting bored.

Got a start on one of the Ironsworn games I wanted to. For this one I'm using a post-apocalypse Earth setting that basically mimics the basic setting conceits of Ironsworn, though interpreted through a different lens.

I had intended for the first episode to carry the Wanderer from Iron Vow to first milestone, but a string of spectacularly bad rolls ended up burning the local bar down instead and leaves our hero no closer to the goal of finding the macguffin that will restore pure water to the people of his tribe.

I've recently been using my downtime in the evenings for some solo Mythras gaming in a grim fantasy world. One thing I wonder from everyone here is, how do you play out unraveling conspiracies and court intrigue? Since there is no GM to really make the conspiracy, it's difficult to piece together the rolls of the dice or tarot cards and what not. How do people do this?

Just putting something out there, but if I were to offer premium versions of the cards for Samurai Dice, what would you prefer? The character with no background image over rainbow foil or a lenticular hologram of the character in motion?

I think these warbands are ready to be put aside for a time. The battle was fun, but the ending was a bit of a let down. Tundra (blue) had a clever idea, if he put explosive runes on all the loot stashes then the opposition would have a hell of time trying to carry them off. He hadn't anticipated that Azrael might just roam the board slinging fireballs with abandon.

In the end, no loot was carried off. Both Tundra and his apprentice were slain on the backs of Fireballs and incredible dice rolls. This had the feeling of a finale. Azrael and his band decided they were tired of the back and forth, this was less a fight and more of a statement. The fire mage wanted all treasure hunters to know that this was his territory, tresspssers would face dire repercussions.

The rune casters at least are retired form the board. I may build a new band to face the Fire Mages, or I might start up a new rivalry. Frostgrave is a big place, Azrael only staked his claim to a small portion, which means there are many other places left to explore.

The Ironsworn fantasy RPG is in final editing and playtesting. The 180 page preview release is a complete game, and free to download. It is suitable for guided play (traditional GM), co-op (two or more players, no GM) and solo (just you!)

It is inspired by the move-driven mechanics of Apocalypse World, but tweaks the formula quite a bit. It incorporates new dice mechanics, a la carte character creation and advancement, and moves that are intended to support a compelling narrative progression even at a GM-less table. It has been accused of being a bit crunchy, so if you don't mind some meat on the bones of your narrative RPG, it might be worth a look.

The setting is a rugged frontier at the edge of the known world. Extensive guidelines for adjusting the world to your preferences are included. Or, you can use your own setting. Either way, your character will venture into perilous lands and struggle to fulfill sacred vows as one of the Ironsworn.

I would be thrilled for folks to give it a look!

Here is the 6th installment of my historical LotFP campaign. I had been pretty sure that my 1st level magic-user wasn't going to survive very long on her own, but the dice were inordinately kind to her (at least as far as hit points are concerned).

Hanson is ordered off the case, but the damn stubborn detective just can't let it go.

She does get some payback on Cora, though. So she's got that going for her.

Remember Tomorrow - Wan Brothers Corporation - Intro Scene

Intro scenes lend themselves to narration so here is another monologue. Time has been an impediment to playing. Still, I hope I can find enough time to introduce the last Faction within the time left in this year's #SGAM2017.

I decided to continue my Frostgrave almost-campaign. I haven't been improving the wizards or their warbands, but the battles keep adding to an open ended narative.

I decided to continue my Frostgrave almost-campaign. I haven't been improving the wizards or their warbands, but the battles keep adding to an open ended narative.

Today Azrael and Tundra have both mobilized their followers on response to a new find! An abandoned conclave has been found in the forested outskirts of Frostgrave.

There had been rumors of this location for many years, but somehow it had eluded searchers until now. Along with those rumors came a warning as well. The former head research sorcerer was done in by his apprentice. His vengeful spirit is thought to roam the grounds inviting tresspassers to share his fate!

On the game mechanics, I'm playing a much smaller board this time. The game rules are meant for 28mm miniatures with measurements in 1" increments in 3'x3' board. Lego Bits are closer to 15mm scale, so I've converted all measurements to centimeters to scale it down in a simple way. So a board at 36" to a side became 36cm to a side. I'll be interested to see how the more condensed field of battle plays out.

Trying something old... and new...

Trying something old... and new...

Hey, so uh, long time lurker, first time poster. I'd been messing around with a few different things for #SGAM2017, but nothing really came together until I started reading through Ironsworn. I played this in the last couple of days, and thought I might as well share it as I know a few people (myself included) have been hoping to see it in action. I make no claims to actually having run it completely properly; Shawn Tomkin's I'm sure will be able to spot a fair few mistakes, but I did my best to keep it to the rules as written. Which proved interesting, as I'd been enjoying some wine while playing; so if anything is off, blame it on that.

Which proved interesting, as I'd been enjoying some wine while playing; so if anything is off, blame it on that.

The combat wound up potentially a little graphic/gruesome; just skip anything that's in reddish orange font, and you should be mostly fine if that sort of thing bothers you. I've included my thoughts and generally my thought process, alcohol addled though it may have been, in parentheses. Feel free to ignore at your leisure of course. Mechanical rolls and results are in square brackets. Oh, and I apologize for any inconsistency in the notation of mechanics; its there because that's pretty much how I play, and editing kills a lot of the fun for me.

As far as what I started with, Ludvik had a couple essentially nested quests that seem like they could take a while to get through, and then I just pulled one of the starters from the book and ran with it because it seemed cool and I wanted something more manageably accomplishable before the end of the month. I've got some of the basic world assumptions on a note in my phone I can throw up if anyone's curious, but beyond that playing the game was pretty much what you see in the doc. I was originally planning to post once I'd gotten through the first vow Ludvik swears 'on camera', as it were, but got wrapped up in a detour after a miss on the Undertake a Journey move that got a lot more interesting than I'd expected it to. I realize that the last third/fourth with all the vague references to things not in the actual play may not make sense; if it bugs anyone let me know and I'll throw the character sheet and a brief explanation of the big quest(s) Ludvik's on up to quell any burning curiosity.

Let me know what you think, and hopefully it'll give people a chance to see Ironsworn in action. Huge props to Shawn for finding a way to make a PbtA-style game work solo; I've been tilting at that particular windmill for a year and haven't come up with anything near this smooth. If you get a chance folks, please give it a try and post your games; I'd love to see what everyone else does with it. If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to give my own 2 cents about anything (ideally related to the game posted below, but up to and including the meaning of life).

If there's anything about having the actual play up that is a problem Shawn Tomkin, let me know and I can delete the doc. Thanks for putting the game out; really looking forward to the full version (particularly the chapter on how to run the game and the other assets; shield maidens/battle brothers of some description as Companion Assets? Maybe?).

Apologies to the readers for the writing, see above (ie. alcohol) for why it may be bad/purple/cliché/overdone/etc. I have little excuse for doing conversation and dialogue the way I do; its just more fun to play than figure out good lines for everybody.

So, for #SoGAM 2017 I haven't posted anything yet. I have three ideas right now. One is to use Simon Cogan's Doctor Who Solitaire Storytelling Game, another is to run Max Hervieux's Legend of the Elements with Ironsworn as the oracle and randomizer and the last is to use Shawn Tomkin's Ironsworn but with my own setting.

#SGAM2017 Remember Tomorrow - Tokyo Police Department - Faction Intro Scene

#SGAM2017 Remember Tomorrow - Tokyo Police Department - Faction Intro Scene

Introduction scenes can be narrated or roleplayed out. It felt more appropriate to narrate an inner monologue for this Faction's representative NPC. The thing pretty much wrote itself, as the only thing I did was choose the concordances that I felt were speaking to the context, and transforming them into more readable fragments.

As always, my approach to using the generator has kept evolving. This time, I front loaded as many concordances as I could before I began to look for a message. To do this, I used the same method of taking keywords from the Faction's character sheet, but this time I looked for meaningful concordances before I began actual play in earnest. I still generated some while in play, but mostly I just worked with the ones I front loaded. Maybe that detail will be interesting to someone.

In my latest Solo "Scarlet Heroes" inspired Vampire game, Hanson is captured. But its hard to keep a good vampire down.

Finally finished writing up my first solo play of the awesome Untold: Adventures Await

This is set in the world of Scooby-Doo (using the Scooby Doo "StoryWorlds" dice set), but with a new character, independent from the usual Mystery Incorporated, Scooby gang. I included all of the Series Guide, Episode Guide, and Character Profile as well as the actual play.

Hope you enjoy Ghosts vs. Grimwhistle Episode 1: The Wicked Witch Doctor!

Here's the single-page Four Against Darkness game board I whipped up. It's got the recommended 20x28 grid, 4 character sheets, and an empty "table" for logging your encounters, etc. Let me know what you think about it, any changes you would make, or if any of it isn't self-explanatory (the "poison bottle" line on the character sheet was intended for status / ailments like "turned to stone" or "dead"). Here's the link:

Well I finally got around to learning the rules for Heavy Gear Arena. In the early morning game I started today there has still been a lot of referencing the manual. That being said, it has been the most satisfying mech combat I've ever used.

Here we have the upstart Badland Circuit. Their combat arena is a bit haphazard, but the quality of the competitors has managed to draw the sponsors despite that.

Competing today are the season favorites, The Adders piloting a Paxton Gladiator and a Territorial Arms Black Mamba. They face of with the newest team to make the pro-league, the Fire Ferrets (not affiliated with probenders). The Ferrets are running a Territorial Arms Dartjäger and a NorthCo Hunter XMG. Whoever is backing the new kids isn't afraid to layout the credits!

It's been a careful start, the Adders don't underestimate anyone and have been waiting for the rookies to make a mistake. But the Ferrets have things to do and have been puting the Hunter's Panzerfaust to good use while the Dartjäger heads for the jump ramp.

It's been a lot of fun so far, hopefully I can for ish it up this afternoon.

4AD players: some questions.

4AD players: some questions.

1. Should you roll XP after 10 minions (total) or 10 encounters with minions (any number of minions per encounter)?

2. Is Four Against the Abyss actually the "deeper dungeons" expansion that's mentioned, or is that still forthcoming?

3. The rules recommend a 20x28 squares grid -- is this the size you use? Too big, too small, just right? (working on a "play sheet" to share - 2nd pic preview )

My first game didn't end well! I rolled a dragon in the 2nd room and fought for a bit to see how tough they were, used up a lot if resources before withdrawing. Next my wizard died, then things actually went smoothly for a bit. Eventually though, I rolled a Medusa boss and she turned my cleric and rogue to stone before eating my Barbarian.

I'm excited to try again, though, and maybe try some variations using printed maps and geomorphs, then maybe some of the published adventure modules (assuming they're worthwhile?).

Wanted to share this short article from Jon Peterson about the invention of randomly generated dungeons.

It’s easy to forget the importance of other people and groups in early RPGs, especially since D&D dominates the narrative (or for a younin’ like me who is looking at this as history).

Session Five of English Eerie is here after real-life interference slowed down my posting progress.

It's been coming for some time, but tonight's session marked my first Heart (Harm to a secondary character), and since I drew the highest valued heart in the deck right off I figured I'd lead in with a doozy. Enjoy!

Part 5 of my historical LotFP campaign is up. The PCs have finally made it to a 'dungeon' of sorts, based on an idea I had about the Locations within a Dungewon tables in Scarlet Heroes.

Every once in a while I have a solo game that reenforces why this mode of play is not a runner up to group games. The Mech Arena battle was a blast. For added entertainment value I put on the soundtrack from Real Steel, a robot combat sport movie with Hugh Jackman.

Every once in a while I have a solo game that reenforces why this mode of play is not a runner up to group games. The Mech Arena battle was a blast. For added entertainment value I put on the soundtrack from Real Steel, a robot combat sport movie with Hugh Jackman.

The fight was unpredictable and flowed in a way that wouldn't have been possible as an opponent and I each tried to out think the other. The fact that the pilots had a history made this a brutal fight, the only tactics considered were those that would inflict damage with a side of humiliation on their counterpart.

A tweak to the game's standard reaction rules to allow any system to be activated with reaction dice really pushed the feel of high speed combat. Jump jets were put to good, in particular when Sammie intercepted the Hunter just as he was preparing to launch onto the north tower. She managed to knock Jose around a bit, but he was still in range.

Once Jose has his Hunter on the tower it was all over. The system holding Sammie's jump jets was the lowest quality. She couldn't make it up. When her sensors were hit all she could do was deploy the smoke screen and wait for them to come back online.

That might have worked, but Jose was on point today. The following shot knocked out the sensors yet again. The final shot hit the core a d destroyed the Wildcat, though Sammie was able to eject. Will she be able to scrape together the credits to field another bot? Will she ever get her vengeance know Jose and Team Monster? Perhaps we'll find out one day.

Sorry if this has been discussed, but has anyone tried Expedition RPG? It's more so geared towards the combat portion, but it (in a good way) really shakes up typical game mechanics.

#SGAM2017: Remember Tomorrow - Sarah Rheita - Intro Scene

This one feels a bit weird to share.

I tried something new with how I use the concordances to write the output. The fiction in this one is not like a story, bur rather, I wrote things out as if a GM was talking to me as a player. I found it actually helped my immersion, but it makes me feel a bit silly sharing it.

Still, I guess it's really a version of emulating other players that others like Aleksandar Battreps have used so successfully.

The notes were a lot more detailed and they might be interesting for some. The link to the google spreadsheet is at the end of the post.

I'm pasting a version of the actual play without the concordances or notes here, but it really makes more sense to see the actual play along with the notes and concordances to see how it all came about. :)

Very cool solo game. Hey, Bill Logan remember when you challenged G+ to come up with a tabletop variant of the old Star Trek computer game? I made one called Project Vanquish, but I also think that this one is pretty cool. It's a little more bare bones, but you can see how the game plays just by the preview. It's very simple and there's minimal bookkeeping. The second page has all of the encounter data.

The gist is that you get your ship and roll for encounters, either coming across pirates, restocking at a friendly base or having an uneventful outing. You can track everything using paperclips on the edges of the second page.

I'd like to see a bit more variety, maybe some expansions, but really this is pretty fantastic. Especially since it's only a buck.

#SGAM2017: Remember Tomorrow - Maxim Wargentin - Intro Scene

I've posted only the resulting fiction at the link. Though based on Neuromancer concordances, no one is going to confuse it with William Gibson. I have found a talent to mangle his beautiful prose into my own tortured crap.

Still, the prose is hardly the point; it's all about the process as a fun game. So fear not, for I am not going to force anyone to read bad fan fiction without seeing the process behind the game part. I am taking a page from Todd Zircher  , and using a spreadsheet to separate the game parts from the resulting fiction. The concordance generated phrases that inspired each line are in column A, the resulting fiction in column B, and the (very) sparse mechanics in Column C

A link to the spreadsheet is also at the blog link.

My Bolt Action game continues. As seen in the photos, the Germans currently have the Manor House secured. The Waffen SS took some casualties getting there, but they forced the Soviets out for the time being.

Meanwhile the Russians managed to get into position behind a roadside fence and used that cover to take down the German regulars working towards the lumber mill.

This board layout is certainly proving to heighten the already advantageous nature defenders usually enjoy.

I made a couple of changes mid game. I took the tanks off the table. They were making the Infantry too cautious and the game less enjoyable. So I just removed them and carried on, having far more fun.

I also started marking where casualties occur with little red cubes I stole from some boardgame back when. I thought it would be neat to see what areas prove to most dangerous.

Finally I got really annoyed measuring things for some reason. I've never read the Crossfire rules, but I've read about them. Just enough to be dangerous. So I've been hammering out some no-measuring concepts as I go. Nothing I'd share with the public or subject a live opponent to, but an added project that has proved to make the game a bit more fluid this time around.

I was rolling up some NPCs for possible submission to Zach's Bestiary and decided to use my Covetous Poet charts for one.
Not uncommon for me to do, but I usually stick to one genre. This time I decided to see how the same motivation rolls varied, if at all, using each set of genre charts. (including the three bonus (*) ones)
I figured I'd share the results.

NPC Modifier: Intimidating (CP NPC Personality Chart)

NPC Noun: Moneylender [with outstanding debt] (Tome of Adventure Design, Patrons & Targets)

Motivations rolls-
1. 226 / 970
2. 935 / 587
3. 996 / 380

Results for-

Fantasy:
1. control weapons 2. trade organized crime 3. win high priest

Horror:
1. control wild animals 2. trade penitence 3. work holy site

Sci-Fi:
1. crush will 2. transform owner/proprietor 3. win heist

*Super Hero:
1. control warrant 2. trade pet 3. win hired muscle

*Mystery:
1. control wealth 2. trade performance/acting 3. win housekeeper

*Spy:
1. control wealth 2. trade old man/woman 3. win guard

I ended up scrapping the game I had ready to go because when I pulled it up after a couple of weeks of sitting I realized it was THE WORST GAME EVER MADE!!!! and could never see the light of day.

It's got a fun "roll some dice and use them when you feel like it later" mechanic, Foresight. Pbta-style resolution, using an assembled pool. Stats that riff on A Dirty World and slide around a lot in play. Some new charts, some cribbed from last month's game because they fit so well. A fun flowchart style scene structure.

All in all, quite a bit of fun to write, and seems to work well in practice -- but of course, I know how it's supposed to work! As always, love to hear what people think.

I've been wondering since someone mentioned "never having thought Fate would work solo" or something similar recently on my #EverMyst post.

I've been wondering since someone mentioned "never having thought Fate would work solo" or something similar recently on my #EverMyst post.

I've wondered myself about the viability of PbtA games solo, and for one particular reason: One of the things I really dug upon reading through DW was that the DM (or whatever the hell they call it) doesn't have to roll - ever - if she doesn't want. That's like half the rolling removed, which can save a lot of time... But requires a lot of trust in fiat of your primary world-builder, and the hope she can pull off both neutral "I am the world" rulings as well as setting "you heroes shall die!" Villain-focused, hero-punishing difficulties.

Has anyone got experience working this style play with PbtA? Maybe I just have experience with the game in normal times, and it'd be so second nature that the solo nature wouldn't make much difference?

Anyone running solo PbtA?

I went through an edited part of "City of Crime" down for a stand-alone release as a separate thing,

"A Night on Patrol", focuses just on the Patrol Encounter, Specific Crimes, Types of Rackets, and Districts of The City charts, and has been edited to exclude material that might be considered unfitting or inappropriate for an average comic.

The Germans are attempting to slow the Soviets down by seizing the lumber mill in the upper left of the board. Meanwhile the Russians are attempting to take the manor house on the center right to use for potential snipers nest or to invest light artillery.

So far both platoons have been working around the ample cover, attempting to force the other out into the open or at least out of position.

Since the Germans only have one squad with Anti-Tank weapons, the mere presence of the Soviet T34 has forced me to hold off on moving them to defend the enemies objective point.

I'll be interested to see how it resolves over the next couple of days. So far my experience with Bolt Action indicates that once the casualties start mounting momentum really picks up.

Watching the original Highlander, and I came across two things:

1. Ramirez says to McLeod, "You were born different." Outside the other movies, I think that's interesting.

2. When Ramirez teaches McLeod to sense the stag, he explicitly says, "That's the Quickening."

3. When talking about the Kurgan, "If he wins the prize, humanity will suffer an eternity of darkness."

I'm kinda interested in seeing how a Highlander 1 setting would work. Maybe like Street Fighter meets decapitation?

Sorry for the delay, Session Four of English Eerie is up now!

This session included the drawing of a second Grey Lady (two back to back from the last session) which draws the tension up and brings the Author into the final battle against the darkness that surrounds Lord Cunningham's manor.

Stats wise I have just 1 resolve and 1 spirit remaining after a roll that I bet heavily on didn't go my way.

Enjoy!

I’ve just spent a very nice couple of hours wandering around the Fabled Lands, a gamebook series with an astonishing amount of freedom. I am not usually a fan of the genre, because I feel a little limited by the choices the author allows, but this time they really seem to have done a good job at making it feel sandbox like. I thought this might be of interest to the group here.

I still have a couple of "blanks" for some details. Suggestions welcome, if not, I'll find out in-game...

Maybe a funny question:

Maybe a funny question:

Do you root for your characters?

Coming from solo wargaming, I find there's a split between people who play one side and fight "against the system" so to speak, and people who view the game neutrally and are just seeing what will happen.

When role playing, I find that I tend to take the latter view a bit: If the heroes get eaten by a monster, that's how that story goes.
But then, some people are into it to tell (or experience) a deep story and that sort of attitude won't really work for that.

So where do you stand?

Hey everyone! I updated Pythia to the completely arbitrary version 1.5.0.

Mostly I added in some new generators (with 20 encounters each for wilderness, urban, and dungeon), migrated in some tools I use all the time from my various games (keywords, tags, complications, Moves), added in a new FATE-based oracle (inspired by The Bureau), and made a few tweaks and bugfixes.

I also added a framework to easily create your own panels -- now it's just a matter of copying a couple of files and then making lists in a text file to set up your own buttons in your own panel.

I also updated the help file to reflect all the changes. As always, I'm here to help should anyone wish to install, and I'm here to fix if there're any issues.

Happy #SGAM2017!

This week has not been a productive one for gaming. However I was able to set the busy schedule aside this morning for a bit. I've moved on to Frostgrave with my Lego "Bits" scale games.

I have my Tundra lead Sigilist warband facing off against the Elementalist Azriel and his troop.

I found a pack of flameless tea light while looking for something else, and for some reason is sparked my imagination. In Frostgrave you are fighting other magically inclined scavengers in the ruins of a once great city. In this continuation of my campaign the rival bands have ventured into the Everlight district, where the great Elemental Spirits were harnessed for all manner of purposes.

The minis themselves were fun to make, since I had bigger versions to base off of. I particularly liked how Tundra's Warhammer turned out.

Pics below, and I'll share more if anything interesting happens over the course of the match up. I expect it'll be talking up the table for a few days, since responsibilities can only be postponed so long.

I haven't fully developed my rules variant for EverMyst, a Fate hack merging the meta settings of Everway and of Myst. My grasp of Myst lore is pretty tenuous but this game will incorporate ideas both from original source material of the point and click games and novels, as well as that of the Fate-powered Myst game, Unwritten. (The latter seems to take many liberties with the Myst universe, but seems to be internally consistent enough and provides interesting new background material)

The core game is basically Fate, with Elements in place of skill pyramid or Approaches, and I intend to lean HEAVILY on the Fate fractal to keep statting to a minimum fraction of game time, particularly as I'll be acting as both GM and an ensemble cast of heroes and villains who may cluster into parties or break up and reform at any point based on how cool and sensible it seems at any moment in play. Think Marvel Heroic/Cortex Plus notion of splitting the party NOT being verboten, and in particular the ever-changing cast and party composition in Final Fantasy VI. (known to many in the West as FFIII originally)

The character creation rules for EverMyst are mostly inspired by those of Everway itself and its point distribution across Elements, Powers and Magic. As elements in EverMyst are essentially replacements for skills/approaches, we need to constrain their scores in a way similar to Everway, allowing for epic heroes who shine in one or two areas but need to lean on the squad in others. As there are only 4 elements, I've also decided to incorporate Everway's specialties, which are heavily context-dependent extra bonuses beyond the bonus always awarded when taking an action using a given element. In this respect, elements might even be thought of as replacing the 4 basic actions that Fate encompasses, though they're still always mechanically behaving like Create Advantage/Overcome/Attack/Defend and utilize the same 4 outcomes as Fate.

I really haven't created a single character beyond some onion paper-thin sketches of archetypes and the notion of a sort of party leader/sage guide (the "Growth Walker", who has learned seemingly all the general knowledge of the realm we begin the game in) to a host of younger "middlings" who are coming of age and must leave their tribe to learn of the world as a whole in order to assure the continued survival of their tribe in a world of merciless nature and merciless peoples. The realm itself: a vast desert that may even encompass the entire sphere of Grehn, the majority of the world's fecundity trapped by some magic or artifice of the Lords of Oasis, the enormous and diverse capital city the explorers must eventually visit during their travels.

I'm also incorporating the notion of a coalition of inter-world spherewalkers hell-bent on conquering every sphere - and yoking its populace as enslaved soldiers at best, or Matrix-style energy sources at worst - in a quest for ever-more power and immortality. This coalition is at war with traditionalist, benevolent egalitarian spherewalkers who tend to live among the people of their worlds rather than reigning over them. This idea was something I'd planned on incorporating into an Everway game I plotted out a few years back but never played.

The parallel ideas of Everway's spherewalkers, gates and spheres with that of Myst's Art, linking books and Ages is fertile ground for exploring the philosophical questions around the Art: is it ever truly creating new worlds, or merely specifying more particularly-described existent worlds in an infinite multiverse? Are gates and books somehow related? What is the true origin of the gates, and what truth or myth is there to the Walker who is said to have created them as he/she steps from sphere to sphere?

Anyway I'm really digging the idea, whatever anyone else may think. Here's a Gdoc export of some of my notes so far:

Session Three of English Eerie!

I drew my first Grey Lady and the tension increases. While first sessions ramped very slowly due to an abundance of Clues, I feel certain that from here forward things will quite rapidly degenerate for our intrepid hero.

I'm not going to lie, I rather hope I roll poorly and have to take the "bad" ending for the story. As a fan of Lovecraft I feel it's a weak horror story that allows the protagonist to escape unscathed :P

My first session of English Eerie - Rural Horror Storytelling for One Player by Scott Malthouse of Trollish Delver (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/225811/English-Eerie-Rural-Horror-Storytelling-Game-for-One-Player)

I'm planning to continue playing out the story a day at a time until it reaches its conclusion. Tonight's session drew two of the four Clues, which made today's entry somewhat heavy on exposition. That does mean of course that future sessions will begin to ramp up rather quickly.

Here is my character's description, to help provide context for his writing:

Sir Edward Parsons (Resolve 5, Spirit 5)
I grew up in Derbyshire and the now Lord Christopher was my best friend. Upon coming of age we went to different universities, I became fascinated with ancient histories (particularly that of the Romans in Britain) and spent the majority of my life (and what was left of the family fortune) digging for relics up and down the windswept heaths and moors of England's back country. Lord Christopher followed in his father, the late Lord Christopher Sr, by becoming a minister of Parliament. Despite the distance in our positions, Lord Christopher was the frequent receipient of my letters and I of his.

Recently however he has become quite withdrawn and had not answered at all the letter I sent a month ago, so I made the decision to call on him to ensure he was well. I found him ill, pallid, and weak with no explanation to be had. It pained me to see my hale and hearty friend reduced to this state. Moreover, he tells anyone who will listen about the strange lights and sounds he has seen on the moors that surround the manor and of the strange shapes he swears he sees outside his windows at night. I have decided to stay at the manor for a week or so to ensure my friend is on the mend before returning to my own home in London.

I hope you enjoy and continue checking the doc as Sir Edward delves deeper into the madness that is consuming his friend.

Just putting this out there in case anyone is interested. If you have an Alexa from amazon, you can play a D&D like adventure by saying “Alexa, start dungeon adventure”. Alexa will act as the DM. I tried it tonight just for a couple of minutes and it was pretty cool.

Not really role-playing but solo minature gaming: I just started playing X-Wing miniatures casually with a friend and really like it. Only had two games so far but I enjoyed them very much. Ordered the base game and a few ships (we played with his collection). Since I love tinkering and solo gaming I came up with this very simple first draft of a solo ruleset to play against a simple AI. It is more a brainstorming document and needs testing but I had to get the concept on paper.

So please feel free to try it out (I have to wait for my game to arrive) and give me feedback. I know there are a few solo rules out there and even apps but I was looking for something more generic. A set of guidelines that is quick and dirty and can be used for all ships.

OKay so as discussed, this is my take on:

A group oriented resolution system that can be used very easily by a single player.
A way to let character contribute their strengths through a keyword system, instead of numerical ratings.
Very quick, but still accounts for things like big monsters.

The phrasing may be a bit dry, so the entire thing will look much more complicated than it really is, but I've included a ton of tricks and variations I've been tinkering with.

The core is that you basically assemble a dice pool for each side, pick the highest die and eliminate a character from the contest for the loser.

It's available here, so please tear it to shreds, ask questions if it's incomprehensible and if you can roll a few dice and try it out, let me know.

There's a couple of examples but I didn't include a list of characters or anything like that.

Tinkering with some mechanics inspired by...of all things.. .Tunnels&Trolls (but only a little bit).

Basically trying to solve one of the issues I run into:

*Managing 5-6 character sheets on your own gets irritating, even for a simple OSR-style game.

*When playing with one player and one GM or solo, I want to be able to resolve a big activity pretty quickly, instead of flipping through the character sheets and making skill checks for everybody.

*I like the idea of how combat in T&T is a group vs group thing, but I am not too keen on the execution of said idea.

*I want to able to just scribble a few keywords for each character, instead of a long list of numbers.

I'll share it with you guys in a couple days, if all goes well, if anyone is interested.
It's not SPECIFICALLY solo gaming, but it's written for the benefit of solo gamers (along with 1 on 1 gamers) so I hope that's close enough.

I had so much fun with my micro Bolt Action, that I wanted to see how it worked for Song of Blades and Heroes skirmish. So far it's been great. I wake up earliest in the house, so I putzed around until the crew woke up.

So far the Imperial troop of centurions and spearmen are holding onto the objective area. With the air Mage granting mist cover.

The rebels are moving into position though, with a rebel Bowmaster sneaking on top of a nearby building. We'll see where it goes in further turns, when I have time

Hi everyone! I was curious, I'm thinking of creating a solo adventure for entry level characters, for the Warhammer Fantasy 2nd ed RPG... Would anyone be interested in this? Any advice for crafting a d100 based adventure for a solo player?

All the talk about CRGE lately has me wanting to give it another look after having first dismissed it. One thing about it that turned me off about it was the multiple d100 tables that also required math (surges) before I could interpret a result.

Maybe some ideas from the Morning Coffee Solo Variations (MCSV) Mythic hack could help. (Linked below for the unfamiliar)

Instead of the three existing d100 tables for yes/no questions, we could roll two dice for each question:

A d6 (pipped, to tell it apart) for yes or no, scaleable to likelihood by asking, "How likely on a scale of 1-5 is 'yes' the answer?" Equal to or less than the result is a yes.

- 1 V. Unlikely
- 2 Unlikely
- 3 50/50
- 4 Likely
- 5 V. Likely

With that d6, also roll a "surge die" that starts as a d20 and steps down in size (d12, 10, 8, 6, 4) each time your roll produces an unaltered result.

- 1 And
- 2 And
- 3 But
- 4 Unexpectedly
- 5+ Unaltered result

Altered results reset the surge die to d20.

I haven't had a chance to try this yet. Will report back if I get some solo play with it, but feel free to try it on your own the CRGE's d100 tables turned you off.
