Hello everyone and I've hope you had a great Tabletop Day yesterday and are able to continue your merriment today.

I am posting a playtest of the sole survivor vs a super mutant. I used D&D 5e with the supplement Ultramodern 5 and I am very impressed at how smoothly and easy i this entire process was.

I also will be posting part II of the very short series of Mythic RPG: Prototype. I have recently gotten very lucky with finding online gaming groups through Roll20; Two sessions I am a player and two sessions I am a GM! Anyways, I hope y'all enjoy this playtest and have a great day~! :D

I've just uploaded the latest version of Soloist, my solo rpg assistant. This now includes a very simplistic NPC generator and an equally simplistic adventure seed generator. It's all rather primitive at the moment (and the name generator for NPCs definitely leaves something to be desired), but it's a start.

When you play Dungeon World solo, do you create Fronts and Grim Portents and all that, or do you let the session framework of your GM emulator (eg. Threads in Mythic or CRGE) take care of keeping the story coherent. Will Dungeon World be drastically different if Fronts aren't used?

Ok, so, I'm decided to give it a go to Scarlet Heroes after all, but the main classes aren't really something I like. Trying to make my own, I come for you, the experts, for advice ;O;

I have two questions:

1.- Is there some source of Classes I can easily convert to SH?

2.- How would you create a Hero with an Animal Companion and, would it unbalance the game since I have fray dice already?

I bought 4AD and I'm really happy with it but it made me want more. I've had my eye on mythic for a bit now and I'm curious. Those that have bought it, does it have tables similar to 4AD but just more in detail and selection? Or is it something different all together?

I've updated Pythia Oracle to 1.4.0. This is mostly a bookkeeping release, giving an official number to the version that's been up for a while.

Changes from 1.3 include adding more "pick" from a list buttons, a second character sheet option, and more generators. Everything else is pretty much the same as it was. There's an experimental predictive text panel but it's pretty rough.

I'm not sure where to go from here; I'm pretty happy with it and can't think of anything new to add! As always, suggestions et al are welcome.

A recent post got me thinking about the components of a solo game session. It seem to me like it's fairly common to mix and match different solo tools to build a "toolkit" that you use for a particular game. Here's my attempt at breaking down the general components of a solo toolkit. Did I miss anything?

A recent post got me thinking about the components of a solo game session. It seem to me like it's fairly common to mix and match different solo tools to build a "toolkit" that you use for a particular game. Here's my attempt at breaking down the general components of a solo toolkit. Did I miss anything?

Game System
This is the game you are actually playing and probably the reason you're looking to play a solo game to begin with. It has mechanics for movement, task resolution, and maybe more.
Examples: D&D 5e, Dungeon World, Stars Without Number, Savage Worlds

Session Framework
Part of the GM Emulation, this is the framework that guides your session from point to point and ultimately to its conclusion. This could be scene-based or site-based depending on the type of game you're playing.
Examples: Mythic Adventures, The 9Qs, The Location Crafter, CRGE Threads, Scarlet Heroes Solo

Oracle
The second half of GM Emulation, the oracle answers questions about what is happening. Usually this is a yes/no or yes/no/and/but type setup, and may optionally include likelihood and a chaos factor to make things more unpredictable.
Examples: Mythic Fate Chart, CRGE Loom of Fate, So1um Questions

Idea Generator
This category is fairly broad, but most games will need some sort of way to generate random ideas, events, and sensory information. Usually this is accomplished with large tables of random things that get combined in interesting ways and require interpretation. A game can use multipe Idea Generators to generate different types of content.
Examples: Mythic Complex Questions, Rory's Story Cubes, UNE, Maze Rats

Some systems combine some or all of these into one package. Others do one or two of them well and assume you will use other systems to fill in the rest. One of the fun parts of starting a new solo adventure is choosing the components that best fit the game. What do you guys think?

Monday, April 24, 2017

Hi again guys! I am wondering, is there any GM Emulator you'd recomend for someone doing mostly Dungeon Delves? I am getting quite confused as both CRGE and Mythic (my favorites) seem to be organized towards scene based storytelling.

This installment is a bit more blow by blow, which I dunno if it's exciting to read or not.

I might try a more narrative approach next time I post. Let me know what you'd like to see!

Hi everyone. Happy Friday!

Hi everyone. Happy Friday!

I am looking for playtesters for a solo RPG-light game I have created - perhaps this will be of interest to those of you who like a challenge.

Unbroken is a solo card game focusing on survival and combat in a dark fantasy setting. It tells the tale of an unfortunate adventurer whose party got wiped out by monsters. Alone, wounded and without any equipment the player has to overcome the dangers of the monster-infested tunnels and make it out alive.
Once you learn the game each play takes 15-20 min.

The game has been in development for about half a year and is now undergoing public blind playtesting. I aim to bring it to Kickstarter towards the end of 2017.

Would truly appreciate anyone willing to make a Print and Play and give it a whirl. Full instructions and Print and Play files available at

http://altemagames.com/unbroken/playtesting/

Thanks!

Long post but the below is a quick write up of my first solo adventure as well as my first play of 4AD.

Long post but the below is a quick write up of my first solo adventure as well as my first play of 4AD.

Ragnar the Bold, Sloth the Quick, Groth the Blind, and Samuel the Yuppy had all just sat down at The Goblin and Parrot for a meal when the bartender, Vaninin came rushing over to the table. “I hear some generic monsters have taken over the dungeon system nearby and have been hoarding gold and jewels. I just thought you guys would like to know”. The companions all looked at each other and then made a mad dash for the door……

Shortly after entering the first room of the dungeon a wandering ghost passes through. Ragnar the Bold was so startled, he lost a life point. The others just point at him and laugh.

Moving east into the next room, Samuel notices a fireball staff sitting all alone and forgotten so he rushes over and grabs it. As the others move into the room, a large chunk of the ceiling falls near the entrance. In an attempt to make up for his earlier cowardice, Ragnar takes the hit directly on his helm and walks away unscathed. This greatly impresses the others…..they had no idea how stupid he was.

Again moving east, the party comes upon a corridor that branches off north and south as well as continuing on to the east. Located in this corridor are three little vampire frogs. Ragnar quickly lifts his leg and stomps on the closest frog. He smiles and says, “What’s red, green, yellow, and goes zero miles an hour”? He then lifts his foot to show the carnage left behind.
Using the confusion, Sloth, belying his name slips over to the second frog and runs his dagger into its belly.
After seeing the horrible, disgusting, and disturbing end his friends had met, the third and final frog hops away as fast as he can go. The group find a paltry four gold lying about in the corridor and continue east.

In the next room the group runs into a group of three Orcs sitting around playing Spades. Ragnar, in his typical fashion rushes into the room and removes the first Orc’s head from its body.
Not to be outdone, Groth takes a swing at the second Orc but misses by less than an inch…..like about one dice pip’s width of an inch.
Seeing his brother in trouble, Sloth slinks up to the second Orc and shoves his dagger into the creature’s heart.
Samuel, having yet to prove himself even a little useful, brings his mace down on the head of the third Orc thus ending the ordeal.
The party finds a gold ring on one of the Orcs.

After the killing ends, Samuel notices the room is a dead end (no pun intended) so they all turn to head back into the multi-exit corridor.

Once back at the corridor, the group heads north to find a room with an ornate wooden box sitting upon a pedestal. Sloth, being the sly one he is, attempts to open the box. To everyone’s surprise, including the omnipresent being watching this unfold, he succeeds on his first attempt. Inside he finds a tiara encrusted with rubies.

Two exits leave this room, one to the east and one to the west. Having hit one dead end to the east already, they head west.

Inside the next room a couple of hobgoblins are having an argument over the ability of a Swallow to carry a coconut. Ragnar tenses, prepared to rush the foul creatures but Groth stops him. Groth had decided he wanted the first kill this time and he also wanted to make up for his earlier miss. He runs into the room makes a huge windup and swings his club for the first hobgoblin……and misses. He misses so badly that he spins around in several complete circles then falls to the ground.
Ragnar was very upset that Groth had stopped him so he charges into the room and runs his sword through the hobgoblin Groth had so badly missed.
Sloth tiptoes into the room behind Ragnar and skewers the eye of the second and final enemy.

For what seemed like hours, the group made their way through various parts of the dungeon, running into mostly harmless monsters here and there until they came upon a door with a sign that read “Shhhh….sleeping dragon. If you wake him, you take him.” Unfortunately for everyone behind him, Groth can't read so he opened the door and entered the room. Thus ends the adventure.
Here is part 4 of my historical LotFP adventure. The party finally make it to the (upper) dungeon.

After experimenting with DW and Scarlet Heroes, I decided to finally pick a solo system and got Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2e, but I'm having a VERY rough time thinking on a party I like when compared to only one character, it feels weird however to imagine a lone adventurer as I did on Scarlet Heroes, but I gotta say I kinda enjoyed it...
Anyone have success using Mythic GM Emulator with Dungeon World?

After reading several posts, I purchased 4 Against Darkness today. What a blast. It combines my love of doodling with my love of RPGs. So far the adventure is going well. Once it's over, for better or worse, I'll post a write up. One question though, has anyone combined this with rules from other RPGs? I'm thinking of adding initiative and movement from D&D 5e and seeing how that plays out.

When I found myself interested once again in RPGs, I had a specific thing I really wanted to try: sci-fi. And one of the first things I ran across as I started to dabble in the indie and small-house brands was Rocket Age. I picked it up and read through the core book a few times, with wonderful pulp adventures lurking in the back of my brain. However, I never did entice any of my friends to journey with me on this one.

So has anyone attempted to solo-play a Vortex-driven game like Rocket Age, or Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space? Vortex seems to be used in very pulp-heavy games, which seems like it might be fun to do solo... Wondering which GM-less engines might be a good match, as well.

The first post creating the adventuring party for a solo Dungeon Scum campaign.

A party of 6 rather low-life scoundrels set out to find excitement, riches and a reasonably painless death!

The first "quest"will just be using the Delve rules in the book, after that, might use Mythic to set up some story lines.

Any suggestions for names for a smallish dungeon or cave complex that sounds like it'd be a low level D&D adventure?

I was going to post it on the main blog that I use for my other tabletop wargaming posts (the Nordic Weasel company blog basically).

Would it be okay to share the solo play specific posts to this community or would you lot prefer if it was a separate blog?

I'd sooner avoid two separate blogs, but at the same time, I don't want to seem like I am trying to spam things.

I finally got around to starting a new solo mini-campaign. It's back to safe, familiar Apocalypse World for me, this time using Miso as my gm emulating/ solo play assisting thingamyjig.

Does anyone else find writing this stuff up as a blog takes way longer than running the actual game? I suppose it would help to be writing up electronically in the first place, but I don't think I can tear myself away from scrawling in my little notebook.

Inspired by Todd Mauldin and his podcast, I just finished my own attempt at playing Barbarian Prince. The game is a lot of fun (if somewhat harsh and random), and I'll probably make another attempt before too long. Check out the AP to see the fate of Barbarian Prince Cal Arath and his quest to raise an army to retake his throne. (Hint: it usually doesn't end well for him.)

Reading through the rules again, though, I feel like it would be pretty easy to randomize a lot of the GM decision making. I mean, I could run it and use Mythic GME (which I really like) or one of the other great GME options out there, but I'm wondering if anyone has already made (however unlikely for such a new ruleset) anything specifically geared toward OL.

What I'm thinking, and I should have time to do this, is that I could run my own party through the adventure I'm planning for my group to see how it goes and to see where I might be able to improve it.

Played some Four Against Darkness tonight. Went pretty smoothly overall, but it didn't start out looking like it would.

Played some Four Against Darkness tonight. Went pretty smoothly overall, but it didn't start out looking like it would.

Four members of the Laughing Griffon Adventurer's Guild decided to investigate a forgotten tomb outside of the city. The party consisted of the following guild members:

Ashnar Tempest - Brave Warrior
Hugh the Hand - Sly Rogue
Baldric the Faithful - Vigilant Cleric
Mordenkein - Curious Wizard

Mordenkein lite their lantern and the party entered the musty tomb. The first room had three closed doors on the far wall. In the middle of the room on a pedestal, sat a puzzle box. Ever curious, Mordenkein approached the box and gave solving it a try. After twisting and turning, he received a shock and dropped it to the floor. Not one to give up (I did mention he was curious), he picked it up and tried again. Once more he was shocked. Furious at himself for not seeing the obvious mechanism to open the box, one more try revealed the answer. The box opened and revealed a small vial. The cleric immediately identified it as a healing potion, which Mordenkein drank immediately.

Lifting the lantern, they approached the far left door. Opening it revealed a room that was occupied by five goblins squabbling over a gem. They did not notice the party until the adventurers were upon them. No close calls here, the party killed the goblins and the gem was stored for later resale (50GP).

Two doors exited this room. The left most door led to a large, but empty room. Disappointed, Ashnar led the group to the door in the north side of the previous room. A lady sat on a empty sarcophagus and smiled as the party approached. She offered to sell them healing, but no one needed it or wanted to part with the gold to receive it. She shrugged and wandered off towards the entrance.

The doorway to the north opened into a room with seven goblins. Six were laughing while watching one prance around wearing a sparkling necklace. Again, the minions did not notice the party until it was too late, but they were not giving up their prize easily. Making short work of them, the rogue grabbed the necklace and stowed it for resale (90GP).

Another door to the north opened into a room that was a dead end (well, hopefully not). A strange creature indeed spun around and charged the group. An Iron Eater! The party surrounded it quickly and after some tense back and forth, the monster lay dead. No one benefited from the experience of killing it.

Backtracking to the entrance chamber was uneventful. The middle doorway led to a empty room with another door. Surprisingly, the room directly behind the doorway held another Iron Eater. This one was tougher to kill, but no one's equipment was damaged. Ashnar gained a level from this encounter!

To the right was a long empty corridor that led down another corridor one way and to a dead end room the other. This room held a Chimera! The first three party members missed their attacks, but Mordenkein cast a sleep spell and the Chimera dropped to the hard stone. Defeating the creature gave an experience boost to the wizard.

The last corridor was empty, but the room at its end held the final resting place of a shambling mummy. The adventurers were wary of the walking dead, so much so that they all missed their initial attacks. The mummy tore at Ashnar, but missed Hugh as he dodged the clawed hand. The next series of back and forth saw the mummy defeated and no more damage to the weary party. The undead's sarcophagus held glittering Fool's Gold. Mordenkein held on to this as he knew he could outwit some minions later. It may just save their lives next time.

Back to the city to sell the jewelry. 140 gold wasn't a bad take from the lost tomb. Back at the Laughing Griffon guildhall, they drank some ale before hitting their beds and dreaming of the next big adventure.
Does anybody else choose a system to play with is based on their current mood? I flip between T&T, GURPS, and now True20 soo much haha

How has Solo gaming impacted your "standard"/group games?

How has Solo gaming impacted your "standard"/group games?

I was talking with one of my GM's the other night, and I realized that how I view my character and his roll in the game has changed lately. I'm more interested in what his goals are, what his morality is, and his actual break points are. I'm not as willing to force to the character to do what I (as a player) WANT him to do, but instead am more interested in seeing what he (the character) comes up with.

In our current game, the GM (through a powerful NPC) is slowly corrupting our characters, based on what we want. My characters "vice" is the Greater Good--he's willing to work with evil and do horrible things because he thinks the Ends Justify the Means. Last session, he was put to the test, to kill an innocent captive to prove his "friendliness" with a group on monsters. All the other players thought I should do, it would have made the most immediate and long term sense, but I wasn't sure. He hadn't fallen so far, yet, to be able to casually murder someone for no real cause.

So, I had him roll. I made up a quicky "PC Emulator" and rolled for it, and he barely "failed" the roll, so he couldn't bring himself to actually do it. Ended up making for a great and dramatic scene, with some really cool fall out both within the group and to the world at large.

How have other people melded the experiences of the two?

Reading more into WvH, and I have a few questions. At least, I do for now, though I might have more later.

Reading more into WvH, and I have a few questions. At least, I do for now, though I might have more later.

When picking cards from the tableau, the Hero Player doesn't care about their number, only their suit, correct? If I have a Clubs of 3, I can use any Clubs to "activate" it--is that right?

Conversely, the World Player cares only about their number, correct? The suit doesn't matter--The difference between a 3 of Diamonds and a 3 of Clubs still results in a "3." Or, should the suit "guide" the World Player--in the example in the book, the WP had 3 listed as "evidence." Would it matter if he activated with Clubs (a physical challenge) or Diamonds (a mental/logical one)?

With multiple characters, how does one handle "group" threats. In Karl Hendricks Bridgeways game, during the opening round, the tavern was struck with "glowmad." Only one the PC's reacted to it, the other that was present seemed to be fine on the following turn. Is it just so that any character "deals" with a challenge?

I'm solitairing the Iron Gods AP for Pathfinder right now, and I have an AP thread running on RPG.net if anyone is interested in checking it out.

Since someone was asking about Basic-style OSR solo gaming, I figured I'd share a bit about my BFRPG solo game.

Since someone was asking about Basic-style OSR solo gaming, I figured I'd share a bit about my BFRPG solo game.

I'm using this game as a way to playtest my own megadungeon. This way, when (and if) I can run it for my group, I'll have a better idea of what to expect, and what to work on. For my GM Emulator, I'm using a small sample from the Gamemaster's Apprentice deck. I absolutely love these cards, and intend on buying multiple decks.

It's worth mentioning that, at this point, the dungeon doesn't have much story. Especially, as I quickly learned, the goblin woods outside. This has turned into a hack and slash. That's okay, I can work on that.

Leaving town, Ceele, a human fighter, encountered goblins in the woods, a day's travel out. She managed to escape, having killed all three, but just barely clinging on to her last hit point. On one goblin, Ceele found a correspondence with a villager, regarding a prophecy. Ceele returned to town, patching up her wounds. I decided this was a good point to tweak how I'm playing the game solo.

It's worth mentioning that this is really my first experience actually playing an OSR game, so I'm still getting the hang of the system. All of the encounters I've had so far, I've always been so caught up in managing both the goblins and the characters, that I forget to use the morale rules. All the goblins have thus had a morale of 12, which isn't good for the goblins, adventurers, or even the story, really.

So, with that, Ceele befriended a halfling cleric, who had a friend that was kidnapped by the goblins. They went out, this time together, and fared... well, a bit better. This time, it was the healer who almost died! Ceele bravely stepped in to save the halfling, and again, they returned to town. This trip's bounty was a scroll of Speak to Animals, which the Cleric found.

And that's where the story last left off. The experience gain is slow and tedious for my taste, but that's part of OSR. It will take a lot of goblins to reach second level. I did get Black Streams: Solo Heroes, which gives damage rules for small parties. I gave that a test encounter, and it went well, although I didn't record it as part of the story. With these rules, and hopefully with remembering to use morale, these two might be able to survive even more action!

there's a new update to randm solo, now v0.9.5. engines added: Kenny Norris Fate Solo, Nathan Russell's Freeform Universal with support for the optional doubles rules if you like. I noticed my dice parser might not have standard notation for fate dice -- use "#4f#" instead of "#4dF#" to roll 4 fate die for example.

one notable feature addition: the 'prep blog post' button. it will take the results and attempt to format them nicely for a blog and stuff, brief instructions are in the in the 'help' section. I'm beta testing this, and I wanted to get this feature out before I start posting solo logs to the blog.

the freeform universal 'spend FU' button layout has a bug that I'll fix... later.
possibly much later, it's time to start playing instead of coding :D

Hello guys, another doubt here. A couple years ago I managed to get a bunch of Dungeon Crawl Classics adventure modules, plus the core rules. To be honest I didn't like the game, but I loved the adventures!

As some of your would know, I will run myself a sandbox game using Dungeon World + Perilous Wilds, and even tho it has a dungeon generator, I'd really like to put in use some of the adventures I got.

Any tips, guides or ideas on how to run a solo pre published adventure?
I just picked up World vs. Hero--anyone have any advice or APs of using this Solo?

LONE-WOLF (solo) RPG AP: THE RED STAR ADVENTURERS RIDE TO THE HOLLOW FINGERS

LONE-WOLF (solo) RPG AP: THE RED STAR ADVENTURERS RIDE TO THE HOLLOW FINGERS
System: World of Dungeons '79 by +John Harper, which is a simplified version of Dungeon World by +Sage LaTorra and +Adam Koebel.
Module: Sword Breaker 2: The Hollow Fingers, a zine by +Logan Howard.

PART 0: THE PROTAGONISTS
[Just a little piece to intro the characters.]
Four strangers covered in the ochre dust of the waste approach the "hollow fingers," five towers that comprise the city-state of Alambrom. At their head strides a barbarian covered in furry hides. With a shield slung over her back and a wicked looking axe on her hip, she looks absolutely lethal. Her dark brown hair is tied up in unstylish and messy knots to keep it from blowing in her face. Her name is Velundra, grand-daughter of the legendary Hundra, who was last and first of the Amazons.

Behind her scampers the gray-cloaked form of Arod Shadowfoot, applicant to the assassin's guild. It is at his behest that the Red Star Adventurers (RSA) has made their way through this gods-forsaken desert to reach the infamous fingers of Alambrom.

Bringing up the rear are two figures arguing heatedly. The first is unmistakably a dwarf. Around his neck is a clunky looking symbol of a holy order. To most it just looks like some kind of asymmetrical knot, but to Bozk Krazmakalizar it is a representation of a mathematically-perfect higher form. If you have the time, he would be eager to lovingly walk you through the 64 verses that enable you to mentally traverse each of the symbol's many sides and thus reach enlightenment.

At his side, her slender fingers waving in an agitated fashion, is an elf. Just as Bozk's holy symbol gives away his profession, the various phials and small pouches hanging from her person declare hers. She is Tamara Felanios, the sorceress.

The argument between Bozk and Tamara is yet another squabble over mystical viewpoints and methods, and so they are ignored by Velundra and Arod as the four approach the gates of the first tower. Having met some years ago in the dungeons of Caer Grodontis, the four are inseparable, and have come to call themselves The Red Star Adventurers. Most recently, they were employed by the Burgermeister of Dolis, but a very public falling out with the same preceded their journey to the fingers.

PART I: THE PITS
[Sword Breaker is designed for play with Dungeon World and uses the Dungeon Starter format, or a version of it, as designed by +Marshall Miller. This means it has questions, impressions, threats and objects. Possibly some other components as well. My methodology for playing is to read the impressions and threats first. Then go back and answer the questions from the viewpoint of various characters. The answers then inform how I think the fiction will go.]

Questions
● What do you smell that makes you uneasy?
Arod: "This place reeks of raw sewage. I will almost certainly contract a disease in this horrible place and spoil my good looks with pock-marks. We need to get out/up/away from this place as soon as possible."

● What did you have to give up to get to the Fingers of Alambrom?
Bozk: "I'm not sure I approve of this mission of yours Arod. It has cost us our patron! There is no way the Burgermeister was going to associate with us once he learned what we were up to. Though I didn't him to be so public with his trumped up excuse for why our contract was revoked. Our reputations may never recover."

● Which color is completely absent here?
Velundra: "Have you noticed how sickly everyone looks here? It's the lack of sunlight. Not a single person has any tan to their skin. Most are practically green with this foul air."

● What is missing from your supplies?
Arod "I just wish we could have gotten those forged passes before we left. That was our ticket to the upper levels. Now we have to come up with an alternate plan. Damn the Burgermeister for pinching Blackfinger before he could deliver the goods! He's the best scribbler in the city and there was no time to find another, since we were only given until sundown to get out."

● Who sent you to kill Marush-Kormor the Centipede God?
Tamara: "You know the guild doesn't really want you to succeed, right Arod? Else they would not have given you such an impossible task. Why do you want to belong to a guild that clearly doesn't want you as a member."

Arod: "I think you may have just answered your own question, Tamara! Those snooty guildmasters. They just don't know talent when they see it. Wait til I fling a package at their feet containing the head of..."

Bozk: "Shush! Do you want someone to hear?! The will throw us into the dungeon, if not worse, before we have been in the city an hour."

● What do you expect as part of your reward for this job?
[Answered by the questions above. Arod is undergoing an initiation rite.]

● What did PC name do to get you into this fight with the locals?
Arod: "At least I didn't cut someone's arm off the minute we got inside the gate!"

Velundra: "I assume you are referring to me, little man? Any man that tries to reach into my tunic and steal my purse is likely to get the same treatment."

Arod: "It wasn't your purse he was after, I think."

Bozk: "Don't be obscene."

Tamara: "What was that he was blubbering as he ran off, Shivasar? Shisvazar?"

-------

After looking around it's clear that the best way up is to associate themselves with one of the incoming caravans. The RSA hits a local tavern, The Hopping Eyeball, where some of the caravaners go to grab a quick drink after coming in from the dusty wasteland and wait on their turn in the iron elevator. Arod wants to bribe one of the caravan guards into letting the RSA tag along at the back of his wagon train, in order to hitch a ride up the elevator, promising to disappear shortly afterward. Problem is, the RSA only has 2 sp between them. So first Arod tries to pinch a purse off of another caravaner.

$ Pick pocket: 15! (boxcars +3 DEX)
$ Arod picks up d6*10 sp: 40 [GM awards 40 XP]

Arod is afraid such a large haul will cause the caravaner to call in the guards from higher up and start a hunt. Foreigners will be some of the first to be searched. So he takes out 12 sp for the bribe and tries to PUT BACK the purse, with 28 sp left in it. The guard might think he spent or lost some, but he won't think his purse has been stolen.

$ Reverse pick pocket: 8 (5 +3 DEX)

Arod puts it back. But on the way back to Hop-Eye, the RSA is waylaid in an alley by the (now) one-armed thug and his pals. They step in from ahead and behind, blocking the exit. One of them, a cloaked and mummy-wrapped figure steps up and introduces himself as Shiss Vahar, leader of a The Murdered Ambitions. Apparently this is the fancy name for all the ruffians around Shiss, more of whom seem to be arriving every minute!

Arod: "What gives, oh Shiss Vahar? How have we wronged you. Your friend here should have kept his hands to himself; our barbarian companion frowns upon anyone touching her person uninvited! Let us pass or there might be more blood spilled."

Velundra: [Grinning wryly] "Hmmph"

$ 'Diplomacy' attempt: 8 (6 +2 CHA)

Shiss: "We have no quarrel with anyone but that freak of nature" [He points a bandaged hand, ending in an exposed finger tip and clawed nail, at Velundra. She is unusually tall and broad for a woman. But most people are too polite and/or afraid to mention it.] "You can go. But sshe and I have unfinisshed bussinesss."

Velundra: "So be it. Step back little one." [This, to Arod.] "You too Bozk and Tamara. This shouldn't take long, and then we can get back to our business."

Shiss quirks an eyebrow somewhere under his bandages, casing one side of them to lift. As Velundra charges, Shiss unfurls his cloak, revealing FOUR arms! Worse, he whips out a strange chain and blade affair and swings it in a defensive pattern around him.

Arod: "No shit. Look at that." [He seems unconcerned for Velundra's fate, but secretly is a little nervous, since he knows next to nothing about Shiss, including what the hell he even is!]

$ Roll to get past Shiss' chainblade: 10 (9 +1 DEX)
$ Attack!: 9 (8 +1 STR), damage = 6! (5 +1 Martial Weapon), but gets tangled up in the chain!

GM: Do you want to spend a moment to try and break free of the chain?

Velundra Player: Hell no, I could tie three of my limbs behind my back and still cut this sucker up. I fight on and ignore the chain as best I can.

GM: Ooookay, Shiss brings his free arm(s) down at you, defend yourself!

$ Defying danger: 10 (9 +1 DEX)
$ Attack!: 7 (6 +1 STR) [GM: I would apply a -1 but I feel like I used the ongoing entanglement to reason that it slowed her up and so I forced the defensive roll; it feels kind of wrong to double down. Maybe I should have gone the other way and let Velundra attack again, but at a -1. Whatever, moving on.] damage = 5!

Shiss: "Gaaaah, hisss, splutter, ack."

GM: Shiss collapses in a heap at your feet, with your sword pinned in his guts. As he writhes, sliding up and down the end of your sword in his agony, blooms of orange-red blood come up through his bandages. The thugs look on in shock.

Bozk player: Jeez louise. Unwrap him!

Velundra player: No, we need to take advantage of their confusion and get the hell out before they realize they can gang up on us.

Arod: [Whispering.] "Let's move you fools! Before ..."

And so the Red Star Adventurers leg it, busting a way through the stunned thugs at the end of the alley.

GM: You get past them with no trouble. Behind you, there is the sound of scuffling as a new leader is "chosen." [GM awards 10 xp.]

Back at the Hop-Eye, Arod attempts the bribe.

Arod: "Another beer for my friend here! Guarding a caravan is thirsty work!"

A wench he floated 2 sp to lavish attention on his mark is doing her job adequately.

Arod: "It will be simple, and your master never need know. We will walk up after the caravan master goes up. Your goods won't all make it in one trip. You will stay behind to guard the last wagon, surely there won't be competition for that duty as it means more time in this reeking pit. And you'll vouch for us. We ride up and then we walk off, getting lost in the market. Like it never happened! And you will be standing there with these [clink-clink] 10 silvers in your pocket for a few minutes work. You needn't even lift a hand!"

$ Bribe: 10 (8 +2 CHA).

GM: Yep. It works. But you'll have to be careful tomorrow. Something might not go right. What if the master is waiting at the top to see the last wagon come up?

Arod Player: Crap, I didn't think of that. I guess we'll have to chance it.

STAY TUNED FOR PART 2: THE MARKET

Finished my first delve into 4AD today. Lots of fun. My warrior, rogue, and cleric made it out with loot and many stories to be told at the tavern. How the rogue couldn't hit the broadside of a barn, how the cleric saved the day (more than once), and sadly how a wandering group of rats took out the wizard.

I have to say, this one is around to stay. I've built my Guild of the Laughing Griffon in Excel with individual records for each character and a guild membership to select different characters each delve.

Freeform Universal and Fate Solo Questions

Freeform Universal and Fate Solo Questions

-

For anyone that plays Nathan Russell's Freeform Universal, I'm working on code to support that in randm solo v0.9.5. From a code standpoint, it's moderately complex, mostly because of spending FU after seeing the results and hoping for a better result, but still entirely do-able. Before I start coding, I need to ask a few questions on how you use it:

what are the common result scenarios that you would use to spend a FU point to reroll a dice after the fact?

What's the max number of dice one would roll on a bonus or penalty roll? 4d6? 5d6? (5d6 is my guess, for spending FU prior)

I have guesses on spending FU to re-roll after the fact and which die I would choose to re-roll:

if we rolled penalty dice, and got a doubles/triples/quadruples result, re-roll any die IN that doubles/triples/quadruples set.

if we rolled bonus dice, and got a doubles/triples/quadruples result, re-roll any die NOT IN that doubles/triples/quadruples set.

If we don't have a doubles/etc situation, the die that we're likely to reroll is the lowest odd die, which should be the worst die in the set.

-

Similarly I'm adding support for Kenny Norris's Fate Solo for the next version. I believe the rules are pretty straightforward and it should be very easy to add. The only thing I need to clarify is Surprise Factor.

If yes/no results include - or +, roll 4dF for surprise and check the threshold. If yes/no results include double minus or double plus, roll 8dF for surprise and check the threshold. I assume this includes the middling yes minus minus and no plus plus results, do I have that right?
I was in the mood for some low-key hex & dungeon crawling, but also for continuing my historical campaign, so I thought, "why not combine the two?"

So it's been forever since I solo RP'd, but Follow seems like it could be pretty easily hacked for solo, or even more easily for 2p games. I'm particularly interested in using zero-prep, lightweight, single-session games like Follow/Kingdom/Fiasco/OLBH/Downfall for 1-2p play, even extended across multiple sessions with different quests/kingdoms/fiascos/etc forming larger worlds, which could also be played with varying play groups as well as casts (potentially utilizing Microscope would be a great way to fractalize it all together, too)

Who all does this sort of thing, and do you have any particular tips or tools for tracking all of it in one place, across these [admittedly, again, quite lightweight, to the point I'm over thinking all this] systems? I'm thinking using Mythic character/thread lists could be a great source of additional synergy, of course.

Mostly pipedreams like everything else in my life, but whatever I'm shouting into the void here.

I'm cross posting this to the Follow g+ community as well, forgive the duplication.

Kanban Agile approach to solo gaming?

Kanban Agile approach to solo gaming?

(If you don't know what the Kanban methodology is, check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5izyN66PTxs)

This is a crazy thought I had, and since it's half baked, I had to post it.

So, if you sort of get the gist of Kanban, I was thinking that list of items we sometimes need to keep track of like thread lists, npc lists, etc, could be better managed with this approach.

For example, what if you introduced your NPCs or threads to follow by ranking them by how interesting you find them at the moment? That is, as opposed to them randomly popping up based on a random roll or whatever.

What about Kanban's Work In Progress limit? The Work In Progress limit (which you set for yourself ahead of time) would then limit you to X number of threads you're following at any given time.

Dunno, I think I need to try it.

Here is the final of my solo visit To the Temple of Doom!

Here is the final of my solo visit To the Temple of Doom!

The game has good qualities for the soloist:
* minimal preparation;
* extremely rule-light;
* accurately balanced (to only kill some of the characters);
* it was designed for the GM role to rotate between players, hence improvisation-friendly;
* the fixed story-arch provides a solid framework for an interesting story.

TTTD is clearly thought for one-shots. In my case, this was also a plus, since I wanted to try something new without excessive commitment. I am very happy with this experience: I guess I should try one shots more often.

In hindsight, I think that the solo player should prepare even less than I did. The “secrets” about the Ancient Evil can be rolled at the beginning of each new turn / room. The only preparation you need is the characters (I think three is a good number, but two or four could also be worth trying) and an interesting location (I know there are great tools to randomly create locations, if one is so inclined). Discovery the nature of the Ancient Evil is part of the pleasure of the game: there is no point is defining things at the start. Just improvise :)

Anyone know of a good dice rolling program/app? I have Dicenomicon for my phone, and I generally use the WotC dice roller online, but I'd love to have a simple local dice roller for my desktop, since that's where I do the majority if my solo gaming.

Hey people, it's me again, this time to clear one last rock on my road before I play.

Hey people, it's me again, this time to clear one last rock on my road before I play.

Thanks to your advice I've decided what to play. Here's what I'll be doing, an exploration sandbox campaign like the ones of Kingmaker and Better than any man.

This is my list of materials and sources:

SYSTEM: Dungeon World
EMULATOR/ORACLE: CRGE Conjetural Roleplaying Emulator
OTHER RESOURCES: Rory's Story Cubes (Inspiration), Perilious Wilds DW Supplement (For random locations, NPCs, Srteadings and Dungeons).
SOURCES OF INSPIRATION: Plane of Alara (Magic the Gathering), Lego's Bionicle, Earthdawn, Skyrim, Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Ok guys, here's the deal. Even tho I have what I'll use set on my mind, I still haven't been able to give a proper first step onto adventure. I lack two important things: characters and a world.

It's easy for me to think of characters, I just make one of them who will serve as my character and then make other 3 party members to have interactions with and help my otherwise lone hero. With the maps and else I'm seriously struggling.

Perilious Wilds offers excelent advice on making maps for sandbox campaigns, but every time I touch the paper I wonder if I really should and I never advance. Since roleplaying hobby here is nonexistant (the table for roleplaying in comic conventions is ALWAYS empty, and it's the people I play with already...) it's impossible to find graph paper so I had to print mine on normal sized paper. I have space enough to record locations marking them with old-school map symbols, but when I write what they are on the map I end up eating valuable space to record even more things, which makes me wonder if I even SHOULD try to record names, or how to organize it on the back of the sheet.

Second is, how much should I actually plan? Perilious Wilds tells you to make several regions and add 1-2 points of interest to each, and call it a day, so you can explore and discover. This is kinda conlicting me as the GM Bug keeps biting and telling me to prep more, since there are examples of almanacs on the manual for prep-loving GMs.

Now, I feel weird if I'm playing something without a background story, even if it's gonna be a sandbox campaign. I'll give each character a hook to propel the story forward their motivations, and I'm kinda looking to make at least one of them spiritualy connected to the land, some sort of pilgrimage. Now, my land needs a story too, I gotta think why on earth it's an unexplored place...

Thanks for being so patient and helpful! :)

What are your experiences with "unexpectedly" results? I haven't rolled one yet myself, but I only use the loom of fate, not the threads or scene creation stuff. A lot of the unexpectedly results seem to refer back to threads.

How have people gone interpreting the unexpectedly prompts in play? Have they worked well on their own, or have you supplemented them with another tool/oracle? Or has anyone just skipped them altogether?

I love Microscope. I recently bought Kingdom. I am lacking people who will let themselves be talked into playing. So I started thinking about what I would need to make it enjoyable for solo play. The biggest thing that those games offer from other players is the interaction of different interests, personalities and ideas. I'm trying to work out a way to bring that to the table, likely in card form.

The idea may also have some value for those who have talked about emulating the players instead of the GM in other RPGs.

It's pretty basic at the moment. I'm using Bartle's Taxonomy of Players to give a selection of play styles. In the early concept stage I'm using random interest and personality generators. What other info would be useful for focusing results from out various oracles through the lens of a Emulated Player?

Thinking on which ruleset to use, I'm thinking on the following, but would like to have some advice on which one to pick and also, knowing which is your favorite ruleset when soloing (I never do solo characters, I create parties).

Thinking on which ruleset to use, I'm thinking on the following, but would like to have some advice on which one to pick and also, knowing which is your favorite ruleset when soloing (I never do solo characters, I create parties).

-Dungeon World, I really, really like it, but it seems many people advice me against its use for solo roleplay, as it seems to be heavily oriented towards collaborative storytelling.

-Cypher System, a d20 based universal system where only the players roll die, and is kinda class based; IDK how to work it out on solo, as character growth heavily depends on GM fiat, PCs exchanging experience between them and roleplaying.

-Shadow of the Demon Lord. A game for dark fantasy short campaigns that combines OSR mechanics with open skill creation (by using player created profesions instead of a skill list), the posibility to randomly generate characters and new era class based gameplay. It isn't very crunchy but thinking on having to keep a book to check on my spells and abilities plus checking on a GM emulator or oracle now and then can become tedious.

-Scarlett Heroes. Love the generators there and the mechanics, however it's kinda off putting that there's no real character advancement on abilities, just increasing stats (bear with me, I'm a young player, grew up with 4e, not the gygaxian games)

-Earthdawn: Age of Legend. I like this system, it's a hack of the FU RPG with class based aproach and character advancement, it is, however, tied to its own setting, which I've found kind of "meh".

Any recomendations or experiences with the games I posted above?

Kinda lenghty post full of questions... Look guys, I'm new on the Solo RPG Hobby, I live on a country where roleplaying is pretty much nonexistant, and my very reduced group of 2 people has been my only company for about 5 years, none of them really wanting to become a GM and all of us, every year, with less and less time.

I discovered solo playing last year, and even tho I tried it and had fun I still have many questions, I hope you can answer them.

1.- Is Dungeon World a good system for solo roleplay? I've been leaning in between DW, Fate Core and Erthdawn: Age of Legend (FU Hack), or Advanced Fighting Fantasy 2e for this but can't decide...

2.- Any tips for breaking away from the "must prepare the game" mentality? Something that has made me fear solo GMing is feeling I'm walking aimlessly...

3.- I got the 9 Qs as a Solo Engine. I really, really like Mythic, but I feel it's too much book keeping... However reading 9Qs I don't get how a dungeon crawling focused game, or even a campaign game would work, as it seems oriented with dealing with a whole story arc on a single session. Also because each question only presents 3 themes each.

4.- How should I deal with skills like perception and knowledge and abilities in general that depend on the GM revealing information? Should I do away with them? I ask because, naturally, I MUST make questions to some sort of oracle or use a random descriptor generator to know what's going on, regardless of using the skill or not.

Hope you can help me out guys :(
