I'm puttering around with another idea for an oracle. The basic closed questions part won't be too interesting, more of the same really.

But the open questions could have some legs. I stumbled upon a post about the Ars Magica system. I'm not sure if the rule system would be my cup of tea, but the magic system certainly got my attention. If you aren't familiar (I wasn't either a few hours ago) it's a free form system that combines a technique and a form to produce an wide array of effects.

My thoughts instantly went to solo oracles, and saw some possibilities. What if an oracle answered open questions combinations of basic concepts that created a wide variety of outcomes.

I'm playing with the idea now. Here's a link to the basic concept of the the magic system I mentioned: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ars_Magica#Magic_system
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ars_Magica#Magic_system

I like to keep record of my solo games. My rule is once it's written down it's cannon. This helps push back against my tendencies to want to retcon. So with that, I just found these notebooks online doing a completely unrelated search. I thought some of you other recorders might find them useful.

Predictive text inspired tool (work in progress)

Predictive text inspired tool (work in progress)

Eventually I want to add this to some type of proper oracle, with extras like history window, and a seed window for seeding text. For now the tool only has the writing window.

As text is entered entered on the main window, the tool picks the last word written and displays the five words that came before the current word and five that came after (that's the first line). The rest of the display is for any such instances where the last word was part of some other word's context. The context words are not shown in any particular order, so they might not make sense as a sentence.

I've been using predictive text apps to delegate some of the decision making in the creative writing parts of solo gaming to something outside me. Just having suggested words out there already picks a direction for me, so I've found that satisfying. Now I have it available on my browser if I want. :)

With this one, so far, I've also noticed that the word display can act as a sort of memory device as well. When I type in the name of a location or NPC, things spatially related to those names in the text show up, which jogs memory and is also very suggestive.

You can play around with it here:

My Edge of the Empire game continues. I have finished the adventure today playing the last two encounters (which I will post shortly, I proceed in order). So far I am pleased with the result. So1um in it's extended variant worked like a charm. I still need to polish the space combat rules somewhat. I made them up on the fly but you have to be patient till encounter number 7.

This 2011 monodesire post:
http://monodesire.blogspot.com/2011/05/mythic-gme-fu-rpg-quick-reference-guide.html
gives this table:
6 = Yes, and...
4 = Yes...
2 = Yes, but...
5 = No, but...
3 = No...
1 = No, and...

But I interpret the dice from most positive to most negative:
6: YES AND
5: YES
...
1: NO AND

I think this system was first introduced in FURPG (I often call these FURPG dice). It it so?
Was this system created by Nathan Russell? When was it first published?

I just finished the first draft of an expanded edition of the so1um rpg created by Matt Jackson.

I really like the elegant system so I tinkered with it a little and mostly expanded the gear and combat sections.

This is in no way to be seen as a rip off of his intellectual property, credits go to him for creating the system in the first place, but instead as a contribution to the hopefully ever growing community of solo roleplayers, made out of admiration for this simple yet elegant system.

I am currently playtesting this version in my solo play of the Edge of the Empire Beginner Game adventure. Don't be afraid of the page count, I added a few detailed descriptions to make it a stand alone product that can be used by people with less detailed rpg background as well.

Apologies for not updating my Mythic RPG videos. Aside from conflicts with work and school, I am taking a break from Mythic RPG. This is due to the overload I feel when I play Mythic. Referencing that 'solo gameplay triangle' I saw posted on the forum. I think I was feeling overloaded with trying to wear all three hats of the Author, Player, and Audience. I realized that I enjoy the Author and Audience role. Trying to be the Player too is very frustrating and jading (and weirdly sparks resentment of not having a gaming group to enjoy this process with?). Now, I am aware that I can simulate player/non-player character reactions with Mythic, but I currently enjoy the concept of making/using creatures that don't have well defined statistics.

I am also in the process is doing my first official GM-run game with another player in the coming days! :D

My general interest is in structure and story in solo play. How to get enough of a coherent plot to keep my interest (at least through an arc) without making it a straightjacket or losing the mystery/excitement of not knowing what will happen next.

It's been a pretty interesting journey so far. I've experimented with a loose "scene" and time-based structure, and then with a more "board game" feel with Acts and plot points.

I think I prefer a looser structure, personally, so I've started moving back in that direction.

Anyway, I put together a Lady Blackbird/Apocalypse World mashup over the holidays that pretty much reflects how I'm playing now.

It's light and fast, has plenty of direction for when things go wrong or need a push, and lets me make very custom characters easily. I feel like I'm getting ever closer to the "perfect" way to play for me (but heck, maybe I just like fiddling with ways to play). Probably a bit too "story time" for some people, probably not enough for others, ha.

I originally skinned it as paranormal romance (a bit facetiously), and I just finished, more or less, a science fiction version. Doesn't really matter too much, though, the core mechanics are not genre specific.

That's about it. :)

Some of the party members' backgrounds start to come up, but not all at once, which reminds me -- I had actually written out Zil's background (about 300 words) for the character creation post, but I ended up leaving it out. It wasn't terribly interesting to read, and it seemed more entertaining to just show how she is through her speech and actions is rather than just providing an infodump. Hopefully it's working.

Tonight the cards lead me and the beleaguered national guard forces in the defence of Metro against an invading behemoth. The city was lost due to (unexpected) in fighting amongst the different military units.

The Elite Guards managed to set up a Railgun Turret atop a skyscraper, but miscommunications between the Armored divisions prevented the proper ground support from getting into place. It didn't take long for the behemoth to bring down the office building and the Guards with it.

After that the city's defence forces were quickly wiped out as they scrambled to get their act together.

Using the WIP card deck oracle I busted an international spy ring while I waited to pick my son up from school. There is a house across the street that always looks a little run down. For the purposes of the quick one-off I was a skilled detective working for the FBI. The investigation didn't unravel chronologically, but it turned out to be a safe house for Iranian contacts working with a CIA mole. He liked money, and they weren't having much success with a secret bio weapon program.

The investigation didn't unravel chronologically, but it turned out to be a safe house for Iranian contacts working with a CIA mole. He liked money, and they weren't having much success with a secret bio weapon program.

In the end the mole must not have convinced them, as a botched assassination attempt forced him and his contact from the safe house with presumed monoxide poisoning. Their erratic driving gave me grounds to pull them over and after a few intense moments he gave himself up. The contact had to be sent on to the hospital.

The betrayal was enough to convince the mole to flip on his co-conspirators, and we managed to get him to give a full confession during interrogation.

All in a 20minute wait from the comfort of my car.

I bought a special deck of cards for the game Malifaux. I don't play this game, but the cards looked great. I needed to justify the purchase in my own head somehow. So I've been messing around with it the last couple of days. First I took out 11-13, leaving me with 4 suits of 1-10. I used it with the mythic fate chart and it worked just fine. I was messing around with the cards while waiting for my oldest to get out of school, and realized that the MGE table is not very "on the go" friendly, and I still don't have it memorized. So here's my first draft of a simple, card driven, oracle. I've likely stolen ideas from multiple people who's blogs and posts I've read, all without realizing or intending to. Thanks goes to the community for all the content that inspires me consciously and otherwise.

I had a great solo game today. I bought some LEGOs today because my son wants to try using them for Song of Blades and Heroes. I didn't feel like statting out there profiles this evening, so instead I wrote them up using FURPG. Using that and Mythic I ended up with Imperial Airship ninjas attempting to hack into the dockyard records of the Undead Armada pirates. There was an unintended execution, some torture, and a last minute rescue as the ninjas ran to their ship.

TLDR: Buy LEGOs, roll dice, fun will be had.

I tried "boosting" the PC a bit. I played a session in D20/3rd Ed (since I had a number of short adventures for it), and "cheated"--Gestalt character with "reserve points" option. Well, like many of my solo games, he didn't even make it through the first session.

There's other games besides D20 I want to play with (looking at you, Call of Cthulhu), but I'm leery due to the inherent fragility of a single player in such an environment. Any advice?

My first run at using my hacked together solo-dungeon idea for Savage Worlds.

My first run at using my hacked together solo-dungeon idea for Savage Worlds.

The core concept that have made this the most enjoyable dungeoning I've attempted is that I place wandering monsters in ahead of time. Then I placed two opposing adventuring parties at opposite ends of the complex. If you are familiar with Savage Worlds initiative, I give each side one more card than they need. The extra card allows that party to activate and control a single group of wandering monsters as their own allies for that turn only. I've enjoyed this much more than random tables or single party efforts I've used before.

If it progresses any further I may do a write up to the method, but it's fairly bare at the moment.

Hi. All. I'm new here. I was asked to join and share my 'system' for solo role-playing.

Hi. All. I'm new here. I was asked to join and share my 'system' for solo role-playing.

One of my favorite parts of RPGs from the beginning (beginning being 1982: Moldvay set, btw) have been examples of play. Something about them has always thrilled me. I got the idea to do my own example of play during 3.x when our gaming group wasn't meeting as much as my RPG addiction allowed. I discovered an excellent solo play experience that has served my addiction well over the years. It also allows me to experience gaming systems I otherwise wouldn't be able to get to the table and pretty much play without having to be beholden to others' schedules.

After creating the characters, I set up a basic adventure outline in my head. When I do this with fantasy RPGs, I use a dungeon map and then basically free form the encounters as they go, inspired by the map itself. For this adventure, I don't have a map in mind, I am just thinking 'sewers' and going from there.

I usually get an idea for the Big Bad at the end of the adventure and who its primary minions will be and go from there adding other obstacles and other creatures as the adventure continues. Not planning out everything beforehand provides a level of discovery and uncertainty as I progress through the adventure. Not unlike what goes on in my mind when I write fiction.

I am essentially creating the players on the fly in my imagination as if I were playing their roles in a play. Each one a character playing a character. A play within a play, if you will.

However, the dice also create part of the narrative as well. All rolls are rolled not chosen which adds another layer of uncertainty to the narrative as I go. Plus. I love rolling dice!

I pretty much sit down after the wife and kids go to bed, gather my dice, fire up the laptop, and go. I usually play for about a half hour to an hour each time I sit down to do it. This game I have posted here consists of four such sessions.

Hope that illustrates my process well enough. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have.
