I'm trying my hand at another solo Let's Play. I've finally gotten around to playing Kingdom from Lame Mage, maker's of Microscope. So far I'm really enjoying it.

I took the suggestions some of you gave for my previous attempt and incorporated how I used the oracle to shape the sessions. I've also included the character sheets and kingdom set up in their own posts. Suggestions, questions, and critiques always appreciated.

Hello all! I'm new to solitaire play and just wanted to introduce myself. I gamed as a teenager, but eventually lost sight of the pen & paper scene to computer & online games. Now that I'm an "adult" with a demanding job and a family of 5, I haven't really played much of those in the past 10 years, either.
Hello all! I'm new to solitaire play and just wanted to introduce myself. I gamed as a teenager, but eventually lost sight of the pen & paper scene to computer & online games. Now that I'm an "adult" with a demanding job and a family of 5, I haven't really played much of those in the past 10 years, either.
One day, when playing with my kids, I realized how similar our pretend play was to role-playing, and then it occurred to me to try it out with them. They're only 3 & 4, so I searched online and found several systems aimed at younger kids (4-7 or 4-10) and started experimenting with a few and combinations thereof. They loved it! I loved it, too, obviously, as I continued to read more rule books, blogs, forums, subreddits, etc. At some point I discovered play-by-post (which sounds interesting, but also potentially very frustrating), which in turn led me to information on solo play. I don't know why it had never crossed my mind before, but once it sunk in, I knew I had to try it!
I used the Hero Kids characters and rules since I already had them memorized from playing with the kids, and tried out one of the simple d6 yes/no but/and systems (from John Yorio's blog) and tried to follow along with one of the Hero Kids prewritten modules, which was a great creative writing exercise for me, spinning up a back-story, etc., but it's hard to turn "basement of rats" into fun when you've already read the GM secrets in the adventure text, so about half way through, the fun factor wore off and I just played the mechanics through to the end and wrote a scene ending of sorts. I'm not sure I'd recommend trying to follow a module while attempting to avoid spoilers as a first effort (I felt very confined by it, having maps, number monsters and their locations -- though Hero Kids does scale encounters from 1-4 players -- text to "read to the players", etc.)
Now I'm making my first attempt off-module, carrying the same character/backstory forward (along with the Hero Kids rules so I can keep the emphasis on learning the solo "process" without learning new mechanics) and using the so1um system for answering questions and generating complications and difficulties. I'm also trying out some of the Adventuresmith app generators for fun, along with a Hero Kids monster generator that can be tuned to both location (forest, mountain, etc.) and number of players with a difficulty rating (e.g. easy, normal, boss encounter).
I keep interrupting myself to research more stuff (and post here, too, I guess!) so I've not gotten too far with it yet, but I'm still enjoying it and looking forward to trying new soloing tactics and RPG systems. I've already filled up half a small notebook with my ramblings and ideas.
I hope this hobby sticks (I do have ADHD, so who knows) as I really like the idea that I can carry it with me both in my mind and in a pocket notebook and return to the adventure whenever I can squeeze in the time.
Sorry for the long first post, but I do look forward to interacting with you all. The solo gaming community seems like a great one, very helpful and forthcoming with information and sharing their adventures. Special thanks to Sophia/diehart, as her blog and resource page have probably been the biggest help to me so far. Til next time!

I found photos to cast my party.
Basil is the seer. Rabbits are cautious as a rule but Basil is especially observant.
Violet and Cowrie are the does and so have more authority. Violet is decisive but a bit grumpy sometimes.
Cowrie is more sensitive and nurturing but gets her back up about small things.
Silver is the biggest and oldest. Six seasons, two summers. He is thought wise as well as strong. Wisdom means knowing when to hop and where to land.
Dip is the youngest. One season old and he's the fastest in the warren.
Its summertime and water is becoming scarce. When is it safe to drink from the river?

Scene Five: Scene type: Interlude/Replenishment, Purpose: A gift, Keywords: Duty, Purity, Gold
Oracle: Will the wolf pup live: (78) Yes, but...(Allow, Angelic, Trial) It will be an ordeal and not with out help.
Will the wolf ever trust Sinder? (73) Yes, but...(Wish, Temporary, Leader) It will be looking to join or make a new pack - Added Tyr to character sheet.
The rage had subsided by the time he reached the outskirts of town and when he had finished meeting with Kodo he was himself again. She had that effect on him. Her grounded straight forward approach was comforting and he could rely on her to be honest and forth coming. A good friend.(Healed Minor wound and cleared RAGE from status effects.)
Kodo had agreed to gather some supplies and head out to his cabin to look after Tasha and the wolf, that she started calling Tyr, until both were on their feet or until Sinder returned.
Oracle: Does Kodo know about the missing child? (82) Yes, but...(Discuss, Medical, Goodness) She doesn't know where the child could be as she has been too busy helping with the wounded since the fire. She will ask around.
Is there anyone else in town that Sinder would trust enough talk to about gathering information? (57) Yes
Are there some foresters in town? (66) Yes, but...(Pardon, Benevolent, Demon) They are in town to talk to the magistrate about an altercation between a local merchant and a couple the foresters. - Added Woden to character Sheet
Does he know about the missing child? (52) Yes
Does he have any suggestions on where to start looking? (43) No
Though he is busy with other affairs, Woden makes time to speak to Sinder briefly. He has heard of the missing girl but has no idea on where to start searching for her."My guess is she is dead friend. A little one like that will not last long in the wastes. You should know this better than most." Sinder keeps the fact that she is his daughter to himself.
Sinder starts methodically checking any possible hiding spots and any out laying buildings.
He needs to find some clue to where to start. If he doesn't turn up something soon the girl may perish. Risk - Life. +1 Explorer, +1 Father, Explorer (Cautious) 7 + 2 = 10 Success. Explore temporary number set to 4. Exp. 1
GMA Card for location - Barn
Sinder looks around for any trace of the passing of the child, but even with his skill in tracking, the constant foot traffic and recent tragedy of the fire, has all but destroyed any chance of finding any sign.
Wanting to leave no stone unturned he heads into the barn of the local inn. As he walks in he spots Double J, the innkeeps horse. He walks slowly to the horse hand outstretched. "I need your help friend. I have no where else to turn. Please...please tell me you saw something." When his hand makes contact with the horses forehead he opens his mind to his magic.
He has no where else to turn and the trail is getting colder by the minute. Sinder needs to know where the child is or went. Risk, Life. +1 Ranger, +1 Magic, +1 Father, Weird (Sensitive) 6 + 3 = 9, success. Weird current number remains at 2. Exp. 1
Images come to Sinder cloudy, hazy images that he has to concentrate on in order to bring into focus. He can feel the horses emotions. He is spooked. The smell of smoke is in the air. The barn door opens and there is fire outside. A cloaked man walks in carrying a child. He is shushing her keeping her calm. His horse is already saddled and carrying supplies, the roan with the star blaze, the one they called Jester. He puts the child on the horse and climbs up behind her. She is upset and starts to whine. "Momma...where is momma?"
The man wraps an arm around her. "We are going to safety away from the fire. Your mother said to meet her in the City of Silver. We will be safe there, I promise." The girl continues to whimper but says no more. They ride out of the barn.
Contact with the horse is broken and Sinder staggers backwards coming to rest against the wall. For several minutes he turns over what he saw and heard through the horse, trying to process it. "The City of Silver. Wren?" He knows very few make the trip to Wren alive unless... "He is working for the demon court."
Sinder runs until he feels like his lungs will burst. He needs to get back to the cabin and get his equipment. The man has a three day head start and Sinder will need to leave tonight if he has any chance of ever meeting his daughter.
End Scene.

Edit: A discussion of somehow getting random threads to tie into a coherent story. Interesting to those of us who struggle to achieve this through something like Mythic.

I've been thinking of restarting my Solo Vampire game. Not sure if I should make fresh characters or keep the ones from Alien Hunger.
Fresh ones are, well, fresh and can more easily be slotted into the game going forward. The old ones I know and already have a messed up history. Hrm...

HI Community! I am an old time rpg dude who has just recently found out about solo rpg's. I have looked at the Mythic ruleset for the game master emulator but someone here wrote in a blog post that it was old and cumbersome. So my question is what solo system (That works with any setting, i am mostly interrested in sci-fi or futuristic rpgs) i should try. I heard of Solo in a post here, it looks very interresting cause i am playing Traveller. I also looked at Miso, but it is a bit too small and just general yes/no rules from what i can tell from it.

This is the fourth installment in my Heirs of Sea and Shadow Campaign. I am having a blast telling the story of Sinder. I have started using the Gamemasters Apprentice cards (the trial set) in this session to generate all dice rolls and to generate keywords for and and but statements from oracle responses.
"You are not your character. You are your character’s author. Your
mission is not to make your hero’s life safe or to succeed; it is to test your
hero’s mettle and prove he deserves the title. Don’t pull your punches, but
root for the poor sap – he’s going to need it." - Second Principle from Heirs of Sea and Shadow.

Scene Four: Type: Montage, Purpose: A gift, Key Words: Ice, Mistake, Self, Predicament • Plot Point: Lock In
Tasha wakes to the sound of wood being chopped. The cabin is dark, lit only by an untended fire in the fireplace set against the north wall. The cabin is a simple affair, though larger than what would normally be found out beyond the touch of civilization. The construction is solid and in good repair.
Having gathered enough of her wits she attempts to get out of bed and quickly finds that even the simple act of pulling the blanket off of her causes pain. She looks down to shockingly discover that she does not have her own clothes on and that she is wearing a simple woolen shirt that is three sizes to large. Upon inspection her wounds have been cleaned and stitched. The grime from her arms and stomach has been washed off and a small wooden chair with a blanket thrown over its back has the appearance that someone has been sitting near her off and on.
She hears a mans voice outside. "Come on little one, you need to eat and drink to recover your strength. How else are you going to get strong enough to hunt?" The mans voice is unmistakably Arcan's but who is he talking to?
Tasha attempts to roll over to the edge of the bed and has to stifle a scream of pain. The people who make their homes near the demon wastes are not prone to being idle or relenting when things become hard but the pain is almost unbearable. Almost....she will try again. She takes a deep breath and attempts to move closer to the edge of the bed, but this time with deliberate slow movements. The extent of her weakness upsets her beyond words, and scares her more than she will admit. Finally she musters up the courage to admit she needs help, "Arcan? Arcan come here please?"
A few short seconds pass and the door opens. "I have not gone by that name for quite some time." If he is happy to see her he is hiding it well. "My name is Sinder now." He doesn't even look her in the eyes.
She nods, having heard as much in town. "I have you to thank for this?" She gestures toward the stitching and bandages on her arm.
He holds up his own arm showing it stitched but not covered. "I went and fetched Kodo as soon as I got you and the pup back to the cabin. She is a talented healer and.."
Tasha interrupts, " We don't have time for this. I will extend my gratitude to her when I next see her. I came to meet with you about a matter of great importance. I have some very important news for you but please...please tell me I haven't been asleep more than a few hours."
He looks at her now. "You slept all night and part of the morning. It is before mid-day still."
"No...No...," She turns her face away from him, tears falling. "No...it has been too long."
"I am sure your father, or husband as it now occurs to be a possibility causing his voice to waver, will understand. You have an honest excuse for not coming home last night. I asked Kodo to let your family know where you were. I was half expecting them to be here...."
Again she cuts him off, but this time much louder and harsher, almost a scream. "For my daughter!! Its too late for my daughter! For," her voice softens, "our daughter." She turns to look at him tears running down her cheeks. "You have a daughter Arcan, a beautiful daughter and she has been missing since the fire."

You tore out my heart and threw it upon the ground and now, NOW, you come here with these claims. Why!?" He doesn't even notice the feared look upon her face, the attempt to raise her arms to fend off the blows she expects to come. He doesn't give her time to respond. "I loved you!" He starts walking toward the door. He has to get away from her he is fearful of what he will do.
"I was scared Arcan. I knew I was pregnant and I didn't know what to do. So I turned to my mother for advice. She was the one that filled my head with what would happen to our child, she told me I needed to get away from you so that our child, YOUR DAUGHTER, would have a chance at a life you never had! So she would not be shunned due to her blood. I never wanted to hurt you. That is why we left. I am sorry I hurt you. I am sorry I kept this a secret. My gram died and we came here to see to her affairs. I knew it was time to tell you. "
He stops and looks at her, no emotion in his features. "I told you my name is Sinder." He walks out of the door leaving her there.

Spent 5 exp to add the Magic tag to Sinder. This reflects Sinders increased usage of Weird and his Ranger abilities to become more in touch with the natural creatures of the world. I had envisioned his resource of, "A supernatural effect or ability", to be an innate magical ability. Perhaps derived from the demon blood. I have updated his character sheet and changed the resource he has access to, "Jinxes, illusions, enchantments", to reflect this change.
Dynasty Information:
I figure Arcan and Tasha were intimate for a couple of months. She wasn't trying to get pregnant but neither of them were doing anything to prevent it. Both were young, spirited, and healthy.
Tasha Pregnancy Rolls: 11 Failure, 5 success
1-3 boy, 4-6 girl: 4 girl
Name: Emmarees Page
Passed on traits: Ranger (2), Honorable (4), Explorer (4), Magic (7), Strong Willed (6), Cook (1), Sneak (1)
Sinder given the tag "Father".
Wounds cleared, status effects erased, and current numbers reset to reflect the returning to current time.
Scene 3: Status Quo • Plot Point: Incident
Type: Straight
Purpose: (roll twice) Prepare, Escape
Key words: Phobia, Vice, Mistake
Location: Sinder's Cabin
It is only two days since the fires at Isa Verys. Sinder has returned home and is outside chopping firewood.
Oracle: Is he alone? (33) No, but.....Danger (NPC Friendly)
(They don't call it Wolf Creek for nothing.) The howl of a wolf sounds nearby. Sinder pauses to look in the general direction. He knows he is safe this close to the cabin as long as he doesn't let a pack sneak right up on him. As he continues to split wood, a never ending job, another wolf howls a bit further up the creek, which is quickly followed by a third and a fourth.
"They have caught something." Sinder has been out in the woods long enough to recognize the sounds of a pack closing in on a kill. He pauses briefly listening to the sounds. Over the years he has found a connection with animals. Those naturally occurring animals of the world, not those sickened or twisted by the shadow. Through many trails and errors he had trained himself to accept and embrace that connection. So, somewhat by second nature, he let his senses search out the nearby wolves. A trick he had used several times during his forays into the darkening forest of the Demon Waste.
Sinder wants to connect with a member of the wolf pack in order to see through its eyes to determine what they are hunting. The risk is minor. +1 Ranger, Enchantment resource +1, Weird (sensitive) 5 - 2 = 3 success. Weird current number set to 7. Exp 1.
The first time he had tried this, with the rapid change in perspective and the quick, unpredictable, and uncontrolled head turns, it had made him lose his dinner. He had felt queasy for some time after. He had tried again and again though, to the point where he was prepared for the sensation caused by the change in his sight.
He immediately recognizes the large boulder and large shallow pool of Wolf Creek just over the hill from his home. They were much closer than he had thought. The wolf was not smelling the ground and was running for a tree. More than likely it was hunting by sight at this point. The wolf came to the tree and jumped up and Sinder watched, almost in slow motion, as the wolf sank his teeth into a booted foot. The sound of a woman crying out in pain breaks his bond with the wolf.
Grabbing his bow and quiver, which are always close, and keeping the axe with him he runs full out for the top of the hill which will give him a good vantage point of the area he saw.
Sinder gains the temporary status Combat Advantage.
Oracle: Have the wolves pulled the woman from the tree? (90) Yes, and...she is already severly wounded.
Are the wounds fatal? (34) No, but...it will take her a long time to heal.
Is this someone Sinder knows? (59) Yes
Is it Kodo? (4) No, and.....time is running out
The woman has been pulled from the tree. Blood can be seen on her face and right arm. The left leg of her breaches have been ripped off just above the knee, and blood is flowing freely from a large gash from her shin. She wields a branch like a club and is swinging at two nearby wolves. Three more are circling around behind her. It is only a matter of time before they kill her.
Oracle: Does she see Sinder on the hill? (10) No, and...a wolf attacks
Sinder wants to shoot the wolf that is immediately attacking her, he hopes to kill it quickly. Major risk. +1 ranger, +1 Combat Advantage, Combat (Fight) 7 - 2 = 5 success. Combat current number set to 7. Exp 1.
The arrow flies true and strikes the wolf as it bites into the woman's thigh. The arrow strikes the animal just behind the left front leg, exactly in the mid-line of the body. The aim of the shot causes the arrow to pierce the heart. The wolf dies almost immediately. The woman is fatigued and fading fast, she falls to the ground under the weight of the animal. She still brandishes the club as best as she can.
Oracle: Can Sinder get off a second shot before the wolves figure out what is happening? (92) Yes, and...It can stop the wolves advance.
Does Sinder still have combat advantage from the hill? (93) Yes, and...+2 advantage this shot
Sinder wants to shoot the next wolf that is closest to the woman, he is hoping to kill it, chase it off, or least draw them from her. Major risk.+1 Ranger, +2 Combat Advantage, Combat (Fight) 9 - 2 = 7 Success. Combat current number set to 8. Target Number rolled: Combat Consequence (6) Sneak Attack. Status Effect: deadly aim, Exp. 1.
The woman does not see the wolf sneaking up on her flank. The wolf pounces just as the arrow strikes it in the eye. The wolf yelps as the arrow strikes it full force and penetrates its brain. Its body goes limp, its momentum causing it to crash into the tree at the woman's side. She looks up seeking the source of the arrow but does not spot Sinder.
Five wolves initially, two have been killed leaving only three. Check morale for the wolves.
Oracle: Do the wolves run off? (26) No, but...they turn their attention on Sinder.
Will Sinder be able to get off another shot before they get to him? (84) Yes, but..lose combat advantage.
Sinder knows he will only get one more shot with the bow before the wolves close on him. He steps out onto a nearby boulder in order to get the correct angle to shoot at the approaching wolf.
Sinder wants to shoot another one of the wolves, hoping to kill it or chase it off, before they get to melee range. Risk Minor. +1 Ranger, +1 Deadly Aim, Combat (fight) 8 - 2 = 6 success. Combat current number set to 9. Exp. 1.
Tracking the wolf down the shaft of the arrow as it runs full out in his direction, he leads the shot just enough. The arrow strikes the wolf in the back right leg. The wolf tumbles and stops. It is alive, but currently out of the fight. He has only enough time to drop the bow and heft the axe as the last two wolves crest the hill top and close in on him.
The first one comes in fast, trying to take Sinder off his feet. The second circles to the left.
Sinder wants to catch the wolf with the axe to wound or kill it to avoid being knocked down himself. Risk Major. +1 Ranger, (I don't think deadly aim should apply to the melee weapon so I don't use it.) Combat (Fight) 9 - 1 = 8 success. Combat current number stays at 9. Exp. 1
As the wolf lunges, Sinder sidesteps and pivots putting his full weight behind the blow, the axe catches the wolf just behind the head. A sickening crack can be heard as the wolf falls to the ground thrashing, its neck broken by the blow.
Oracle: Does the second wolf attack while Sinder is fighting the first wolf? (36) No, but....it is the largest of the pack.
Sinder turns and brings the axe to bear on the largest of the wolves. It is slowly circling him, a low, deep, primal growl reverberates in the air. There will be no fleeing for this animal. It makes a quick feint toward Sinders feet, but quickly turns the attack upward aiming for his throat.
Oracle: Does Sinder recognize the feint for what it is? (55) yes
Is there enough room to bring the axe to bear on the wolf? (16) No, but..Sinder has a dagger on his belt.
Does Sinder have enough time to draw the dagger? (77) Yes, but....not before the wolf attacks.
Sinder is unable to bring the axe to bear, he wants to draw the dagger and finish off this wolf and not take a fatal wound in the process. Risk Life. +1 Ranger, Combat (fight) 4 - 1 = 3, Success. Combat current number remains at 9. Exp. 1
Sinder sees the feint at the last minute, a fact which saves his life. Dropping the axe he shoves his left forearm into the animals mouth. The teeth clamp down, and a sharp pain shoots up his arm. Warm blood begins to run down to his elbow and drip off into the fur of the wolf. His eyes water as he struggles with the creature. Reaching over with his right hand, up under the beasts jaw, he grabs the wrist of his left arm, putting the wolf in a front head lock. The wolfs head is held twisted unnaturally limiting its motion. Every time the wolf opens its mouth to bite down he pushes his forearm deeper into the back of the animals mouth limiting the force of its bite. Pushing the wolf forward he slams it up against the boulder then using his left arm like a torque bar he forces the head of the wolf down towards its body. Letting go of his left wrist, he grabs the hilt of his dagger and pulls it free. In one quick motion he extracts his right arm, running the razor sharp edge along the neck of the wolf in the process. The animal thrashes tearing deeper gashes into his forearm. Its claws rip several lacerations into his chest and thighs. Sinder presses his weight onto the animal smothering it under his frame. He maintains his hold until he feels the animal go limp beneath him. Quickly rising he sinks the blade of his dagger between the ribs of the massive wolf delivering a death blow.
Sinder gains a major wound and the status: Laceration left arm which will turn to scarred over time.
Cutting a length of his pants off he makes a quick dressing for his forearm. Collecting his bow and axe. He quickly moves down to the wolf he injured with a bow shot. It is laying still, its breathing rapid. It doesn't even look at him as he approaches.
Oracle: Is this wolf a threat? (23) No, but ..it will die with out aid
Hefting his axe Sinder moves forward to put the young wolf out of its misery. The axe is high and ready to swing when the wolf barely opens its eyes and looks up at him. A stunning realization hits Sinder. This is the wolf he had bonded with, the ones whose eyes he had seen through. All resolve leaves Sinder.
"Be strong little one. I will be back. I will do what I can. I promise nothing."
The hatred he feels for himself at this moment is staggering. "Must I always destroy. Is that all there is to me?" Sinder didn't realize he was talking outloud to himself. Its something he did alone out in the woods or at his cabin. Conversations with himself were common place but he forgot that someone was near who could hear.
"My dear Arcan, you have created much more than you know." The woman smiles, and in that smile Sinder remembers long winters nights made warm.
"Tasha...?" Sinder feels his soul vibrate. He can't find his words.
Tasha steps forward to embrace him but instead collapses at his feet. Exhaustion and loss of blood doing their work.

So, kicking off the group design thing!
I have a few projects that are ready for other eyes and that need solid play testing.
I am also happy to provide ridiculous levels of feedback if anyone's looking for it.
So... is anyone game?
Edit in some info:
The game is Heirs of Sea and Shadows.
https://exposit.github.io/katarpgs/lite/heirsofseaandshadow/
It's a strongly narrative game of romantic high fantasy with sliding scale stats, a "push your luck" mechanic, and a dynasty system. It relies heavily on actor stance over character stance, drawing on the way I play games like Total War and Crusader Kings 2 (but without the war aspects of either).
At this point, I'm primarily looking for the "feel" of the core mechanic, especially how it works in practice.
I would also like to hear about the dynasty system, which is still very rough.
I would appreciate any constructive feedback, however short or long. In this thread is just fine, or a google doc, or whatever works for you.

Dynasty Event (1) - An old lover who betrayed you once turns up asking forgiveness.
Random Race : Lunedd
Name: Tasha Page
How do I know her: ?
How long since I have seen her? (D6 years) 3 years
Scene 2: Dynasty Event. Type: Flashback. Key Words: Distance, Anger, Come to blows with
Three years earlier: Arcan (he had not yet fully accepted the nickname Sinder from the foresters at this time) is huddled in the back of the warehouse shivering against the cold. Rarely did he come into town, but when the snow continued to fall and food became scarce he was left with few options. Taking any work he could find to get supplies, he had snuck into the warehouse to sleep out of reach of the elements. The fact that he was here uninvited nagged at his sensibilities but he was desperate and what did these people know of him, his pain, his loss or his life? Who were they to judge? He knew he was being petty. Sleep came with difficulty and only in small intervals. The cold would take hold and he would have to jump up and down and run around for a little while before laying back down. His thin and worn blanket did little to stave off the cold.
Oracle: Does someone know he is in the warehouse? (60) Yes, but...They do not intend harm.
Her name is Tasha, the daughter of the local innkeep. This is his warehouse. She had spotted a boy sneaking into the warehouse a few days ago. She had toyed with the idea of telling her father but when she had discovered it was Arcan, the curiosity of “the boy with the demon blood,” intrigued her. She wanted to know more about what made this young man tick. Did he have the same wishes, wants….desires as the other Lunedd boys. Were the rumors true? Did he have scales on his back, did he eat his meat raw, and were his genitalia really barbed like a thorn bush and surrounded by small horns? It was said that if a woman, not of the tainted blood, were to lay with him, they would be left bleeding and most likely die from the ordeal. Such were the stories told to the young girls of Lunedd to sway them from being lured by the charms of a demon spawn. It was these thoughts that urged her to sneak out to meet the boy that first night. A large sac hidden by the shed after dinner is recovered and she quickly made her way to the warehouse to see him up close, to see if the rumors were true. At first she fears he has left when she enters the dark building, but soon the unmistakable sounds of a boy shivering in the night cold comes to her. She smiles to herself and sneaks off to spy on him.
I want to see if Arcan can notice her but don't think it should just be left up to the Oracle. There is a very good chance of major harm if he is discovered. +1 explorer, -1 cold / hungry, -1 exhaustion; explore (cautious) 7 + 2 -1 = 8 fail. Explore current number set to 4. Status effect: starving (1 exp)
At first she just watches but quickly becomes bored. Feeling the weight of the sack on her shoulder she moves forward. Arcan doesn’t notice her, he has the blanket pulled over his head and is shuddering violently. The sense of wonderment is quickly replaced by pity. Dropping the bag to the ground she goes to pull out the old blanket she had taken from her Grams. The sound of the bag hitting the floor causes an unexpected reaction from the boy. He throws himself hard against the back wall and brings his arms up into a defensive position. As though he is expecting to be repeatedly struck. In the dim light she can see his eyes are wide and deep with fear. He stares at her, rolling over in his head different things to say, but none seem right or will come forth.
Arcan wants to befriend her, or at least sway her opinion, to keep her from saying anything to anyone. The risk is minor. -1 evil, -1 loner, Social (empathetic) 5 + 2 = 7 fail. Social current number set to 2. Status effect: Shamed (1 exp)
Tasha is unpacking the blanket, “I also put some cold venison in here. It's not much, but better than you have had recently by the looks.”
“Please...just go!” Arcan is still pushed up against the back wall. The force and manner of his tone were regretted and as soon as the words were uttered but there was no taking it back now.
Tasha looks him up and down, throws the sack down into the dirt and without a word she leaves the warehouse. He wants to say something to make her stay, to let her understand, but his mind can’t find the words. He watches her go. His mood grows darker.
Oracle: Does Tasha tell anyone? (41) No.
Arcan expects someone to come barging in and snatch him up. He contemplates running, but the truth is, there is nowhere for him to go. The snow is near 3 feet and still falling. He will die if he heads out in this and he knows it. It won’t be the first time he has had to spend time in the jail. The smells coming from the sack bring him out of his forlorn thoughts and his stomach rumbles. The herbs of the venison wafting through the air makes him ravenous. If he is going to jail, at least it will be with a full belly. He spends all night awake and waiting, but no one comes. The blanket, though old, is thick and warm. He drifts off to sleep just as the first rays of light filter through the wooden slats of the warehouse.
It is late morning when he hears the door to the warehouse slam shut. Arcan stands and begins gathering his things. At least the jail feeds him one meal a day. “Now listen hear Arcan Rees,” Tasha is already speaking to him though she can’t see him yet, “when someone goes out of their way to do you a favor it's not polite to dismiss them like a diseased rat that's raiding your larder.” She steps into view, finger pointed in his direction, another sack slung over the other shoulder.
“Thank you”, he says quickly, more out of shock than anything else.
“Now there, that wasn’t so bad was it?” A smile spreading on her face.
And just like that a miracle happened, well at least to Arcan. They had a conversation. They spoke of the village, the snow, Tasha’s family, truth be told Tasha did most of the talking and Arcan listened but it is something to this day that Arcan, now Sinder, will always remember.
So it came to pass that she visited often that winter. She somehow made arrangements through her father for Arcan to work through the winter months and in exchange he was afforded a tiny room in the inn's basement, as well as a meal snuck to him by Tasha, now and then.
Time of rest: 26 days. Replenished: Status effects of shamed and starving healed. Social current number reset 3.
Now that he was staying at the Shepherds Lodge Inn it was easier for Tasha to visit, which she did often and sometime late into the night. She learned if all the stories told of the demon spawn were true and Arcan learned a hard truth. No matter how hard you worked, no matter how honorable you were, some people would only ever see him as demon spawn.
Oracle: Do Arcan and Tasha get discovered by her parents? (40) No
Does someone else notice their closeness? (39) No, but...she leaves him unexpectedly
Then one early spring day, Tasha begins stops visting. She makes excuses, doesn’t talk to him in the same manner when he does see her, and sometimes that isn’t for days. The closeness which he had come to enjoy disappearing with the snow. In the course of 2 weeks, it was if they were strangers again.
Then one morning as he is carrying wood into the main hall of the Inn he sees her seated at a table. Her parents on either side as they all enjoy breakfast. She notices him, he knows she does, but she will not even make eye contact.
“Hey Arcan, who gives you permission to oggle at my daughter in such a manner?” Her father, John Page, is teasing him, but with a note of seriousness. Arcan was nervous, he had considered this path several times, now a chance lay before him. The old Arcan would have lied his way out, no more.
“I am sick of this hiding.” he says while staring at Tasha.
Arcan wishes to tell Tasha’s father the truth with hopes that they will be allowed to be together. He is risking exile from the this family, possibly the community and perhaps even physical harm should the wrong people become involved. -1 Heritage, +1 Honorable, Social (Empathetic) = 6, Fail. Social Current Number set to 2. Status Effect: Exiled, +1 exp
“How dare you?!!” Tasha roars with indignation dripping from her voice. “Like I could ever love something like you….you…..,” her face contorts into disgust as she turns to sob into her father's chest, “you are not one of us! Please father, PLEASE, make him go.”
John Page is a reasonable man, but he would do anything for his only daughter.
Oracle: Does John Page make Arcan leave? (42) No
“Surely we can discuss this dearest? He is a young man after all, all young men do foolish things in the presence of pretty women.” It is apparent that John is upset and he stares at Arcan while he brushes his daughter's hair back and brings her face level with his.
“I caught him stealing from the kitchen. He is always watching me with that look on his face. He was trying to watch me at bath.” she is rambling at this point, a steady stream of accusations and alleged dishonesties. “HE TRIED TO KISS ME! MAKE HIM LEAVE!!”
Oracle: Does John react to this? (58) Yes
As Arcan steps forward to try and talk to Tasha, to make an attempt to figure out why, why is she saying such untruthful things, he sees her father's face turn red with rage.
“I trusted you! I gave you a home and invited you in among my family. This is how you repay my kindness?” He steps up grasping the hatchet near the fireplace and turns on Arcan. “My father said never to trust your kind. I am a fool!”
John is swinging for the fences and wants to seriously injure Arcan. Arcan wants to disarm him before someone gets hurt as he has no ill will toward this man. He did, after all, help Arcan when he was in need. He is also the father of the women he loves. +1 ranger, +1 honorable, Combat (fight) 7 - 2 = 5 ; success. Combat Current Number set to 7. Exp. 1
John slashes wildly, untrained rage guiding his swings. Arcan quickly dances out of the way and when John overextends he firmly kicks him in the chest sending him flying backwards into the table where they were at breakfast.
Oracle: Is there a clear path to the door? (64) Yes, but….he will lose everything here.
Arcan assess the situation. Looking one last time at Tasha, he can see her crying, sobbing, not for fear or her stated crimes, but something else that Arcan doesn’t understand. “I am sorry.” he says to the room in general, and to Tasha specifically. He quickly leaves through the door and runs straight out of town.
Arcan takes up work with the foresters, he embraces the nickname Sinder. He earns a reputation for himself as a ranger and explorer among the folks that border the Demon Wastes. For close to a year he does not return to Isa Verys. When he finally musters the courage, he learns that the Pages had sold the Inn almost a year previous and had moved. If the rumors were true, they had made a new home in Never City.
End Scene.

End Scene.

This is feedback on Heirs of Sea and Shadow, a game by Tam H.
This is feedback on Heirs of Sea and Shadow, a game by Tam H.
I chose the Demonsguard scenario and played through a scene to get a feel for the core mechanic.
What I liked: How dangerous fighting was, with negative Status Effects quickly building up to make future fight rolls even harder. I felt that this fitted in with the theme of the game very well: violence only making things worse. I liked the feel of the setting in general, with the emphasis on hope and redemption. I liked how the trade-off between overt and covert proficiency was inbuilt into the core sliders. I found it fairly easy to choose which core slider I should roll on: the definitions of each was clear and without overlap.
What was confusing: The scale’s current number sliding up or down following a failure. I wasn’t sure whether I should slide the scale in a way that would decrease the chances of success at the same roll (so failure and success would have opposing impacts) or if I could choose whether to raise or lower the score.
What needed work: I felt that one of the example skills that I picked (Warrior) had a large amount of overlap with the core slider Fight.
What might be good to expand on: A few examples of foes and obstacles that the player might come up against. Perhaps also some ideas about how to redeem or negotiate with a few of those foes. Maybe expand upon the scenarios by providing some scenes that could follow each of the beginnings, to give the player something idea of what to aim for when using the oracle. Providing a few example places, groups and important individuals in Never may be helpful as well. Perhaps some more guidance on acquiring new resources and how many Resources it is reasonable for the character to have at once, given how important re-rolling is as a mechanic.
Overall, I found the core mechanic of Heirs of Sea and Shadow to reflect the setting’s themes very well and be easy to use.

Rule #1: Every Coin Has Two Sides
- There are two options. Let's call them A and B.
- Roll two dice. They can be the same size or different sizes (e.g. a d6 for Option A and a d20 for Option B).
- The higher roll wins. If it's close, find a compromise.
(Emphasis mine) So if she rarely agrees with your PC star, then give her the larger die, like a d12 or d20. PC gets a standard d6. If she agrees with the PC more frequently than 'rarely', drop her die to a d8 or d10.
I like to treat d6 as the 'normal' die in this style of play.

Ok so I was just wondering how you play allies who might not agree on what to do - ever. I will have a female co star joining my adventure - she is sassy intelligent and stubborn - the chance of her agreeing with my Stars choices all the time is highly unlikely - I guess I can just throw a dice and see if she agrees but wondered if there was anything more elegant in the way of a chart, flow diagram or other mechanism to make it more intersting?

Developing encounter tables for my Wicked Maze-like game.

Developing encounter tables for my Wicked Maze-like game.
Some encounters are characters and may react in various ways.
In Wicked Maze, monsters have a difficulty (roll d20 reach or exceed target number to defeat monster) and a damage score one takes when a roll fails. I think a rolled damage feels more natural.
For Cultists, I created three categories, mooks, priests and archpriests (minibosses and bosses) but for mutants I just gave a d10 for the Difficulty Rating. Perhaps damage should just meet the DR by highest die type.
So if it gets a DR of 8 damage is d8.
For some creatures, I have multiple DR the first is the ability to evade (or avoid) and the second is to defeat. Evaded or avoided enemies can recur in subsequent encounters.
Encounter 5. Is the Pit Kraken. A hole from which emerge tentacles which will ensnare the unwary and drag them into the pit never to be seen again.

This was written from an idea in my "Story Cache" file, something I've been holding onto for years, where I add an idea for a short story or better every week. I'm now using this list to tap into for solitaire RPG ideas. My games will be played as free-flowing as possible (no framing or outlining of the story is allowed), but the writing you see will definitely be edited after playing for readability. Today you will read the first part of the first scene in the unfolding story of Alex Ryerson and his colleagues, as they strive to right wrong in the galaxy (for all the good that's going to bring).
Backstory:
Alex Ryerson, gambler and adventure seeker in the lonelier quadrants of the Milky Way in the 26th century of Man, has stumbled across a group of thugs called the Frasta, pushing a new level of drugs to the poor on the planet he currently calls home: Tanak, fourth planet of the Basilin system (about 150 light years from Sol system). There are rumors this group is funded by a cartel moving the new hyper-psychosis drug between systems with impunity, somehow defying detection by in-system Marine Corps.
Alex has seen what these drugs can do to a planet as insular as Tanak; it is already starting to rip through the minds of the system's relatively poor population like a scythe. Now he wants to know who's behind this insidious hallucinogen, and how he can help stem its rapid flow throughout the known systems of the galaxy. Life's been good to Alex until now.

Make a pact with the right sort of being, you become a warlock, get a familiar and can form a cult. Friendship is magic.

I've found that I have a recurring problem in my solo gaming, something akin to writer's block for the solitaire gamer. Every so often I'll have the urge and the time for a game. I will gather whatever I need for the RPG or wargame and get set up. And then as I look down at the table I lose my suspension of disbelief and can't get passed the fact that I'm just pushing cardboard and dice around the table.

Exiled of the Horrid Maze and Maze of the Mad Alchemist, both products of Fishwife Games, have an identical structure.
A maze is presented, filled with symbols like a skull, an eye, a dagger, some coins.
You roll on the coins and its treasure! Roll to see how much. If you get a skull, its a monster. Roll to see which one.
I like that mechanism but I would alter it.
Suppose you encounter a red, blue, green, or purple spot. You roll on the red green or purple table.
A room with a red spot means roll on the red door table, red floor and ceiling, red traps, monsters, and treasure.
A white spot might mean it has the same atmosphere as the previous rooms but no danger.
The idea of a skull on the maze meaning a monster means you might try to avoid it (unless its blocking the one way through). Even then, you'll know a fight is there.
When posting actual plays via something like Google Docs, is there a FAQ or something in the group detailing options we should set for sharable permissions? And should we put some sort of CC license on the documents (for, say, just in case I want to whip it into a publishable story at some time in the future)?
So I am finding some interesting youtube videos regarding solo rping. I don't want to spam the community, but I do want to share them. Should I make an shared excel sheet or playlists? I want to gauge if other users have a lot of videos they want to share before picking a method. Putting them together could be a great resource for newbies.

I'm loving the two-dice option in Miso, where each die can be of differing "weight" to roll high on. However, I just had a thought: what if you roll "crit" on one of the die? With the Option A/B rule in use, there's really no need for a ladder of yes/no options (Yes and, Yes but, No but, etc.), so those don't make sense to add to a critical roll.
What would make sense to you as a crit for Miso? Maybe introduce/force a McGuffin? A complete scene/character shift?

Up at the top is a huge rose garden right near a strange luminous machine.
There are two bridges, a tunnel, a secret door, a well, and a chute that leads to a purple eye. I don't know what it does yet.
The red zone is a higher level. I've decided this dungeon goes up.

I may want to add some redshirts to die in traps.

You might balk at and reject it. Perhaps you fear such power would be abused.
You can trust yourself.
The oracle is there to help you choose among your various awesome ideas. At least two.
Combat can be more dynamic than sword blows and lasers. Characters can perform daring escapes Jackie chan style, or duel all over the scenery. Brawl like WWF.
You could do that with the right kind of player but you could be that kind of player provided you had the rapport with your imagination the keep the ball rolling.
So, here's my Game Chef entry.

It's a post apocalyptic old west style exploration of the afterlife using a custom oracle deck and d6s. It was a lot of fun to write, it's clever in play, and I'm glad I went back to it.
I had the idea, scrapped it, then ended up writing it from scratch about two days before the deadline because I just liked the idea so much! Couldn't get the images of the boats in the Aral Sea -- now desert -- out of my head.
As always, I'd love to hear thoughts!

Heya, everybody!
Heya, everybody!
I'll just ask bluntly, because otherwise you know I'll edit and edit and edit and never hit post.
What can I do to get more feedback on my games? And encourage people to try them out? Or even just get more commentary when I post them?
Should I be posting on other forums/sites/reddit/etc. to kind of drum up interest? Are there other places on the 'net that would be happy to see solo games?
I would love some advice on this; lately I've been feeling like I'm tossing stones in a lake and none are skipping.

What causes an in-game event to feel “real” to you when you play solo?
What causes an in-game event to feel “real” to you when you play solo?
Reading another post (Henry Harrison's), caused me to start thinking about something.
Introspecting on my own past experience with group play (or even just making up stories with a childhood friend), I find that the things that gave me the feeling of an event “really happening” were either the GM saying so (authority) or group consensus. We never had to write things down to make them feel “real”. Either authority or consensus sufficed.
RPG system results always feel real too, because they carry some weight of authority as well. So do solo engines/Oracles, but I find them unwieldy for the amount of feedback I need from them. In part, because I want to play with the RPG system, not with the Oracle itself, which I almost want to fade into the background (something that people say about RPG systems!).
Automated tools like parsers have helped, but they also have their shortcomings because they're not AIs with personalities.
Anyway:

I wonder how we can use this for solo roleplaying games (that are not Choose-Your-Own-Adventure).

I found this on story-games. It's a thread about Sword & Sorcery RPGs. But at some point Rafu talks about solo protagonist games. Perhaps of interest for us.

Maybe I can put Fantasy in fantasy baseball and pit a team of dwarves against a team of halflings. that would be fun.
At the very least I'm hoping I can learn the baseball game more deeply. i have some friends who are real baseball heads and I'd love to be able to talk about the game intelligently. :^)
edit to add: maybe there will be something that can be used for solo role play too!

It's inspired by the one hour mystery shows I used to love, Psych in particular. Something about the hot sun, gorgeous tropical flowers, and vibrant summer colors just screams "USA Channel marathon" to me, haha.
Enjoy!

this is my attempt at an immersive solo role play system. i have taken plenty of inspiration from Oculus, Macchiato Monsters and others.
i consider role playing with friends to be communal daydreaming. this is a system for solo daydreaming with role playing games :^)

Here is a question for those who use the excellent MiSo by Sophia Brandt and/or Bivius by lino pang aka Riccardo Fregi. These systems embody the philosophy I love: minimal crunchiness and high story value!

Here is a question for those who use the excellent MiSo by Sophia Brandt and/or Bivius by lino pang aka Riccardo Fregi. These systems embody the philosophy I love: minimal crunchiness and high story value!
Bivius really is as simple as you can get: you make up two alternatives A/B and use a binary oracle to randomly choose one: lovely streamlined.
MiSo adds two bits that I find extremely attractive: (1) you can weight the two options differently (by giving a higher die to the most likely option); (2) there is the possibility of a tie, prompting you to come up with a compromise between A and B (challenging!). I am using MiSo to have some Minimal Solo Role-Playing connecting my skirmish games and it's great!
The subject I would like to discuss is this: both systems require you to define two options and to throw away one. But, as soon as I write something, I invariably grow fond of it. So I don't feel like throwing the 'dead' option away. MiSo suggests keeping the discarded option in store for the future, but I don't think it would work for me: I need as much “surprise” as possible; if I have a backlog of pre-canned options, truly new things are less likely to happen.
Has anyone else experienced the same? What do you suggest? I guess that a possibility (I haven't tried yet) could be to leave the two options rather abstract and only flesh out the winning one. Other ideas / thoughts / comments?

Is anyone up to do some play testing?
Is anyone up to do some play testing?
Spider's Web is a solo, narrative, semi-structured game where you take the role of a shadowy mastermind, manipulating three Agents to do your dirty work.
I did some preliminary play testing and it definitely makes for a tense, action-packed game, if a bit "arms length". I'm kind of unsure if it will be fun for anyone who isn't, well, me!
Anyway, since this is possibly for Game Chef, it's not quite as thoroughly mulled over and tweaked and poked at as my usual, but I think all the pieces are there, haha.
I'm especially looking for advice on if the numbers seem to play well together, if I made any ridiculous math errors, if there's some important bit of text missing, things like that.
