How often do you keep using the same characters in a Solo game, particularly after some time has past?
I've been thinking of restarting my Solo Vampire game. Not sure if I should make fresh characters or keep the ones from Alien Hunger.
Fresh ones are, well, fresh and can more easily be slotted into the game going forward. The old ones I know and already have a messed up history. Hrm...
Unless its a direct continuation, I often make new characters each session
ReplyDeleteFresh ones are fresh, but there is something to be said about having your audience 'peak in' on how our characters are doing. But that could also get stale. The way I see is, sometimes I have looked at a side character and asked myself - I wonder if they have a neat story. Granted, the argument also could be made the minute you tell that story it loses all mystery.
ReplyDeleteBrian Mathers Sure, why not utilize those NPC side characters? That works really well in comics. Look at all of the side projects that Hellboy has sprouted. I always felt that the Atomic Robo comic was ripe for developing side characters, but they never seem to stick around. Hmm... might be time to pull out that 'Atomic Robo' Fate RPG and put it to use solo!
ReplyDeleteI always want to go back and continue the story of some characters I really liked, but I haven't actually managed to do it yet. If you like the characters you have, but want to introduce something fresh, maybe try adding a new character to the mix.
ReplyDeleteSince starting my blog I've been mostly making lots of new characters and starting new campaigns. But I do go back to most of them after a break.
ReplyDeleteNew campaigns are fun and it's often very tempting to begin yet another, but I get to the point where I'm really sick of first level characters.
I've thought about brining some of my old PCs into various games, but most of their pre-blog adventures have faded from memory, and it would seem wrong to bring them into campaign worlds of which they aren't really a part. Some of them have careers spanning years of real-world time, the longest possibly being my favourite AD&D magic-user who I played on-and-off for about 7 years. I have some Star Frontiers PCs who might even rival his record.
I pretty much re-use the same couple characters over and over, and just switch up the surrounding characters.
