Having finished Larry Niven's "The Draco Tavern", I'm thinking of starting a solo series based more in a fantasy setting but with a similar idea: the PC would be either the manager or proprietor of a tavern/inn in a "hub" city, and the stories would result from things overheard while adventurers dine in the tavern. I'm not sure if the PC would actually go out on adventures; likely not, as I'm leaning more toward having the PC "manage" adventures for NPC groups.
I'm trying to decide on a system to start with. This feels like a PbtA or Fate Accelerated type of game on the "crunchy" end, but as I don't have much experience with those (Fate, some, but not AW/DW), I'm open to suggestions. I had thought my next game would be Ironsworn, but this doesn't feel like a good match for that system (my idea seems more story driven, less confrontational, than what Ironsword was created for).
Thoughts? My only other experience which might match this nicely would be Mouse Guard... {shrug} Too many options in my hands, and too many ideas knocking around in my head! :D

OH, I also had a thought at work today which almost derailed me from everything I was working on! When the story "comes back to" the tavern, I was thinking of making a drop table of possible story ideas to use. Although I'm sure I have plenty of tables I could use in the many RPGs I have already... but a drop table sounded fun! :D
ReplyDeleteDan Davis Cool! You could even do this with a map of the tavern, with a large hall for the most boastful stories and private booths for most sensitive stories of crime and deception :)
ReplyDeleteI figured I'd better try to flesh out what I'm looking for before I go any further, so I posted a blog entry to hopefully explain the idea better!
