Todd Mauldin sparked my interest with his hexcrawl. I haven't determined which rules to use yet for the party.
The question is which system can I use that has enough depth for magical items, equipment, survival, and spells but doesn't take forever to get through combat? Is there a combat lite OSR rule set I've overlooked?
I'll likely use Judges Guild's Wilderness Exploration for the hex exploration. And I'm considering swapping out JG's encounter tables for BOLD's Waylays and Connections.
I've begun the earliest planning. If anyone has any system recommendations or other input, I'd love to hear it.

ReplyDeleteChad Robb I took a look at "Scrawl". Where is the hexcrawling rules for it and the solo rules? To me it is just a rules light rpg.
ReplyDeleteVirginian John I agree, but that's essentially what I was asking for. I already have separate systems for the hexcrawl and for running a solo game. What I'm looking for now is a system with the OSR feel, simplified. Scrawl certainly fits but may be too simple. I may follow in Todd's footsteps and crack open my Deluxe T&T rules.
ReplyDeleteGeoff Osterberg well of course im glad to see you taking off on a solo hexcrawl and glad to hear i had a hand in inciting it :) all i can say is if you DO choose to use T&T as your core rules you wont be disappointed. or black hack is super charming if you're more into a d20-rolling experience. T&T is remarkably flexible tho. but im a big fan of it now so yymv. good luck, keep us informed of what you're up to!
ReplyDeleteCombat and magic is super simple.
ReplyDeleteDo you need Hexcrawl tables?
Battle for Purple Islands and Islands of Purple Haunted Putrescence are good weird hexcrawls.
ReplyDeleteChad Robb it is only too simple in the sense that I like a little more crunch for this genre of gaming. Im treating the hexcrawl as an outdoor dungeon crawl. In dungeon games I'm a fan of long spell lists, extensive equipment catalogs, and skills for even mundane activities. I was looking for simple combat, which Scrawl does provide. However looking over T&T again, I think it's what I'm looking for.
ReplyDeleteAlso Carcosa from LotFP
ReplyDeleteI like my solo games totally simple.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry. I must of had a brain failure. Here is something you might enjoy along side a hexcrawl:
Ancient Odysseys: Treasure Awaits!
pigames.net - Treasure Awaits!
Scarlet heroes would have my vote here...
ReplyDeleteYeah I'd also second scarlet heroes here. Comes with generic GM emulator and Urban and dungeon crawling too.
ReplyDeleteStill, aren't most OSR games fairly rules lite ?
