Thoughts on the Scarlet Heroes solo system? I like the way it gives you more specificity (if that's something you want). But, after playing part of an Urban Adventure, I'm not sure I like it out of the box. In particular, while I get the purpose of the 10 VP timer (it's good to have an end point), I'm not sure it feels terribly natural to force an adventure to have a particular length. Interested in any tweaks that people have found useful.
Others ways include picking freely from the encounter types until it feels right. When you trigger "feeling right" you can ask an oracle question to see if it's the final action scene. I might still track points to see which side is winning.
ReplyDeleteAny timer length is going to be arbitrary -- I think that for some adventures you could just as well give the hero one chance -- one investigation leading to the final fight.
ReplyDeleteAlternatively you could run extremely long timers -- digging to the bottom of a huge plot for example, trying to figure out some Byzantine machinations.
Likewise you could run multiple adventures at the same time -- not every adventure is necessarily going to have a huge urgency to it. So there could be a few different things going on at any given time. Some of them may intertwine.
the game is OK, strongly suggested by many solo players but it's not my cup of tea
ReplyDeleteroryb bracebuckle That's basically what I was thinking. I guess I was curious to see if anyone was going to go to bat for the rules as written. Just finished that adventure. I ended up treating the initial plot seed from the book as a macguffin, since it was resolved quickly. Then right as I hit 10 VP, it turned out to be just the right time for the Big Bad to show up. And kill my PC, as it turned out. 😲 Fortunately he'd saved a noble's life, who in turn is going to drop some coin at a temple to bring his savior back. Hmm, maybe there is something to the 10 VP thing after all.
ReplyDeleteThat Kevin Crawford is some kind of genius. I guess it goes to show that trying things as written before messing with them has its merit.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Gajus Miknaitis, you made me want to run some Scarlet Heroes today!
ReplyDeleteNice!
ReplyDeleteI tend to roll 2d6 for the needed VP, it tends to result in shorter adventures, but occasionally you get a much longer one which is good for variety's sake
