Converting my Edge of the Empire solo campaign to So1um Expanded Edition:

Vehicle Combat Rules

After thinking about it for a while I decided to convert my Edge of the Empire campaign to the So1um Expanded Edition ruleset. As I mentioned in my last actual play the FFG system is a little bit to fiddly for my taste for solo play and I really enjoyed my playthrough of the Edge of the Empire Beginner Box adventure using So1um. It just went smooth. Of course I will continue the current storyline and keep my character, just the mechanics will change. To stick close to the original I decided to use the six stats from Edge of the Empire, together with the skills. Basically the skills work just like cliches in So1um: If you have a suitable skill you get +1 die to your pool.

And since vehicle and foremost space combat is an integral part of Star Wars, I put down some vehicle combat rules that I sketched up while playing the space combat encounter of the Beginner Game.

I will share them with the community as an add-on to the So1um Expanded Edition. Credits go to matt jackson for creating So1um.

  1. John Fiore Hey John, you are right, I have tried a lot of systems.

It is something of a spleen that I have, trying to test every system by playing a Star Wars session.

    To answer your question:
I have started out like many with the old WEG d6 ruleset. This was when I was still in school and we had a regular gaming group. I played that a lot over many sessions and really enjoyed it. I then switched over to d20 and played every version there was: The original d20 version, the revised d20 version and the Saga Edition. From those systems I played d20 revised the most. After d20 came Fantasy Flight Games with their system which I played for more than one session. That is three systems that I played more than one session with (if you count all d20 versions as one system).

And for one-shots I used FU, So1um Expanded Edition, In Darkest Warrens (or the sci-fi version of it), Risus, a modified version of the Apocalypse engine (2d6 mechanic), 13th Age and USR (however I think I never posted an USR session) as well as Microlite20 (also never posted I think). That should sum it up.

The sessions that I enjoyed the most were indeed the ones that used rules light systems: So1um Expanded and Microlite20 are tied for first with Risus a close second. While I do like Risus (as a serious game, using the Best of Set rules for combat) I feel that sometimes it is a little to abstract. Part of the fun is fiddling with the system and using rules for gear and weapons etc. which Risus is not really made for in my opinion. This is also why FU is not really my cup of tea for campaign play.

But now for something completely different: I think it is pretty sad that your great Solo Nexus blog is not online anymore. It was always a source of inspiration for me and really got me into the solo rpg hobby. Is there any chance I could access the old material to look through some of the posts? Are they archived someplace?

  2. John Fiore Yes I do. I use it for as long as I can remember. I think it was the first e-mail address I ever got. You can use it.
