New to solo role-playing looking at getting the Mythic RPG. Was wondering if this would be the best choice for if I wanted to use the AD&D 1e rules and have Mythic be the GM?

  1. Mythic can "bolt on" to pretty much any system, I've used it with D&D before.
    Start off simple, using just the main table, then as you get the hang of things, you can start using the various other rules included.

  2. Mythic is a fantastic place to start. Not only is it a good system for playing pretty much any RPG solo, but it also includes a lot of advice about soloing in general.

  3. More specifically, you'll probably want the Mythic GM Emulator (the blue book). The red book includes this info, but also has a full RPG system as well.

  4. AD&D and Mythic, why not? start off simple and enjoy :)

  5. Yeah, Mythic is sort of the de facto standard GM emulator. There are other tools out there too, which I've been experimenting with as a newish soloer. But probably getting a few plays with Mythic under your belt is the best place to start (and I gather some people never feel the need to go beyond it).

  6. How new are you? Have you tried something simple with yes/no Q&A, like so1um or Tiny Solitary Soldiers? If not, give that a whirl. I also recommend reading the zombie AP pinned on the rpgsolo.com forums -- a more story focused solo game but an excellent, entertaining example of asking the right questions and responding to answers from random generators.

    If you're good there, check out http://thelonecrusader.com, who focuses mainly on D&D soloing, and has several posts on using Mythic. As others have said, it's the unit of measure other systems are weighed against, so you will definitely benefit from learning it, even if it's only to help you discover what you like/dislike so you can find or create the ideal system for you.

    P.S. I'm new, too, so take all this with a grain of salt. ;-)

  7. does the red Mythic book contain useful solo play advices/introductions additional to the GM emulator (blue) or is it just the emulator + "normal" RPG System?

  8. It has a lot of examples of how to use it and what it might look like.
    It's written in the assumption of a group without a GM< but it's equally applicable to a solo game

  9. My impression is that all the solo-specific stuff and examples have been copied to the GM Emulator book. Just looking at the table of contents, these are the chapters that are in the red book, but not the blue book:

    * Character Creation
    * Task Resolution
    * Combat
    * Character Advancement
    * Converting to Mythic

    So basically only the system-specific stuff for using the Mythic RPG mechanics. Everything else... all the info about how to use Mythic as a GM Emulator and how to structure a solo game... are included in both books.

  10. Confirmed, you only need the blue book for solo play. The Mythic RPG is ok, but no reason to use it, unless for some reason the ten million other rulesets out there aren't doing it for you. :D
