Title

I was happy to read about the Matrix Games a couple weeks ago but I didn't figure out how to run a game.
It's pretty simple on it's.face
Characters have a name, descriptions, skills, qualities, social status, anything that could.be useful. They don't have numerical scores, they are just listed.

The contest is determined through argument.
My hulking barbarian can easily cleave a puny goblin in Twain with his hefty claymore.
Strong argument. Easy challenge.
Team combat is messier.

  1. You can do it in a lot of different ways yeah.

I've used the system often used for military think-tank matrix games in RPG's before, which is often 2D6, 7 + succeeds with each argument giving +/- 1.

You can also run it as "any action with 3+ arguments in favor can be rolled for" or ..well...anything at all really :-)

  2. Fascinating. I have not encountered these before.
David, no FATE is not a matrix system

  3. It's very simple. So simple, I've been struggling to come up with an approach to dungeon crawling.
And wondering if it's still possible to randomly generate my character.
Remember, it wants words, not numbers.

Okay so- use Maze Rats or Knave. Or Into the Odd or Troika. One of those that gives you lots of character details.
If you want to use classes, list relevant skills and abilities and give yourself a relevant advantage when attempting them.
Otherwise, list skills and abilities or use an illustrative descriptor like Plays with Knives or Born under a Weirding Star.

Magic is undefined, unbound. You can select spells from a list or use make your own (again Maze Rats is good for this)

  4. A character might look like
    Zeegon the Lurid
    Magister of the Violet Flame
Literate in magic writings, occult topics and persons, and the operation of arcane devices.

Delicate constitution, succeptible to drugs, potions, and poisons.

Excellent perception. Can overhear dialogue in nearby rooms, sense invisible presences, sense demonic or chaotic energy.

White mane of hair and beard. Violet robes, hat, and shoes.

  5. Then list known spells, equipment, contacts, anything else. You can begin before you've written everything.
