Hey, I don't post here much, but I figured I'd get an opinion or two from all of you on a zine project in making.

It's a Solo RPG Zine. Not a indie module or a sort of reference zine for DMs or GMs. It's more of a premade pen and paper adventure with its own rules which are reminiscent of old school RPGs, but simplified for easy to pick up play. You play the game with only a d6, a character sheet and a scrap piece of paper. I'm afraid that I can't reveal the rules yet, due to an agreement. But it's basically a 6-10 page zine with a traditionally inked map in a grid, tables representing the encounters or outcome of them and original art to add a fantasy aesthetic. Each issue of the zine can be beat under 10 minutes, but rather than call it quits you can keep going with the character sheet into other issues. I'm basically making a quick to play game.

My goal with this project is to introduce people who have never played an RPG to the experience or at least something close to. (Addtitionally, I want to provide an escape of sorts) Which brings me to some questions I have for y'all;
How would you bring someone in to the RPG community?
What would like to see in a solo pen and paper adventure?
Would you like to test play the zine?

I know it's not much to go on for a critical opinion, but I can't reveal specific details yet and I want to have some reassurance in the direction I'm going in with the project.

  1. I'd look. I don't want to commit to playing. If the game doesn't appeal to me I won't. But it sounds cool.

  2. I played all the lone wolf adventures the other day. I love this concept. But the writing has to be on point.

    The game doesn't really have dialogue, more like descriptions that unravel the backstory of the dungeon to provide immersion.

    When the first...alpha? Beta? I'm not sure, but when the first version of the game is complete I will send you a pdf file of it to test.

  5. Ray Otus was pondering on a solo zine recently. Maybe something collaborative could form eventually? In any case, bring on the solo zines!

  7. Ray Otus I would also love to collaborate! Big Fan btw. I'll try to make up space for chatting one day, college is killing me right now, so I don't have much time. I've been working on the Zine project after dark to keep with a due date too.

  9. I'd look. Though it might sit in my "to read" list a few years. Crazy busy right now.

  10. I more meant the actual text -- nothing dumps me out of a game faster than grammatical errors and adverbs. Especially adverbs. :D
