A reply that I just wrote got me thinking about this subject. I've used Mythic for years. I've tried other solitary engines over the years too. All that I've tried have one obstacle to me and that is using tables or lists of randomly chosen words. My brain has trouble when there isn't an obvious literal interpretation.

I've stopped using the word lists and use either Rory's Story Cubes or icons from Game-icons.net. When there are icons, even without a literal application it seems that my brain can find less direct applications with less effort.

Has anyone else tried using icons instead of words?

  1. I find that word lists are generally harder to use because you tend to get only two words to interpret as opposed to a clutch of images that you pull ideas out of. Also images tend to have a wealth of sub detail that easily fires your imagination. There are cards out there that throw multiple views at you from words, runes, images, icons, etc to help you get immediate inspiration which is pretty much the point.
When I run solo or GM free, I use mythic gme and a random generator that can take any table (I run them both on a tablet pc). The generator is used for specific information such as NPC details, ruin or dungeon contents, although it can also be used to help with random ideas through word lists.
I guess I could code up random images easily enough... in both the gme and random generator tool.
What would be best? Settings to select number and type of images? Anyway if anyone is interested let me know

  3. Most of them (over two thousand.) I have a sci-fi filter. I hand curate the list to remove some that I don't like (so it is not all of them) and every now and then I hit the site to see if there are more I want to add. I'm probably due for an update. :-)
