I'm trying to think of a good, sturdy, flavorful, two-sided token I
could use to flip back and forth to remind myself when I'm in GM-mode
and when I'm in Player-mode. Any ideas?

Take a gear from a hardware store and paint an arrow on it. Turn it to point across the table to the 'GM' and point it at you when you're the player. If you have NPCs or a game that uses round robin story telling, just point it to the various 'seats' at the table.
I don't know if I trust myself to handcraft something attractive enough. Hadn't thought about more than just two modes though, so thanks for the idea there.
I like using reversi game tokens. I started using them for force tokens in Edge of Empire. After that a stack of them found a permanent home in my dice tray.
Just a quick search turned these up, which are metal and look pretty spiffy. I wonder if you couldn't find cheap jewelry at a dollar or second hand store to disassemble that might look similar. thebrokentoken.com - Fantasy Coins - Barbarian (30)
Have any old computers lying around, Robert Wiesehan? Or know any IT people? Grab a chip, like an old CPU. Player mode: pins up. GM mode: chip side up!
a cool token could be a metal token with Arneson(the first rpg GM) on one face, and your portrait (the player) on the other side. but my favourite token is a real rare coin or token: my options: 1) a roman denarius 2) an old west brothel token 3) a vintage italian nickel, the only available option for me now :) note: GM is the dolphin moneterare.net

ReplyDeleteGoblins Henchman A little large for travel purposes. Looking for something that fits in a dice bag or pencil case.
ReplyDeleteRight now I'm browsing a variety of fantasy and sci-fi coins. Getting lots of ideas, so maybe I'm on the right track.

ReplyDeleteEasy answer - get an Eisenhower dollar. Head on front. Apollo 11 mission patch on the obverse.
