I haven't played it since the 90s, but if memory serves it wasn't really any more deadly than Runequest or D&D at low levels, but the setting makes it seem so. I would definitely run a small party rather than a single PC. You could probably use Scarlet Heroes rules to reduce damage to the PCs if you were really worried. Alternately, you could let Fate Points (or whatever they are called) be a renewable resource, regenerating at the end of each session or adventure.
