Hey, if anyone's into python, I put up a couple of older scripts earlier.

One's a die-drop simulator (because sometimes you just need to know which way that d4 is pointing) and the other pulls a couple of aspects -- complications, plot problems -- from the 1930s Deal-a-Cards, more as a novelty than anything too useful.

http://www.storyforgecards.com/DealAPlot.pdf

Anyway, post with image and examples is here:

https://exposit.github.io/katamoiran/2018/01/31/diedrop-generator/

Neither's all that polished but I've found the ability to drop dice fairly handy when looking at OSR generators that rely on it!

I was thinking of using MiSO ala WINDOW or OCULUS, perhaps some GM apprentice cards, but does anyone have suggestions for storytelling games that are not hindered by rules and stats?

Emphasis is on story or setting diving.

It's been a hard road for Hanson, with more downs than ups. But that's nothing a little violence can't solve.

Title

Is this an actual play? I'm not sure, but it's all the solo-goodness I've had going this week.

I've always been guilty of over preparation for solo games. My new fascination with Maptool and current Frostgrave project have amped that up to 11. However, it has been a lot of fun puzzling through the macros and figuring out how to make it all come together. I finally managed to finish all the card components and the macros for all of the spells, weapons and (I think) all of the conceivable roll types and effects. Now I can get on to the project of actually building my warbands.

Here is the final part of my solo dungeon crawl played using Miso, Rory's Story Cubes and other tools.

In this Scene, Hanson tries to dig up some evidence to turn the tables on her foe, but nothing ever goes according to plan...

Half-baked idea post: RIP Filter Oracle

Half-baked idea post: RIP Filter Oracle

RIP stands for Random-Interesting-Probable.

One challenge with Oracles can be interpreting a vague, universal prompt into a concrete experience. This method aims to create a contextually informed Oracle as you play.

As you solo play, note characters, plot threads, and setting features on note cards. You can also generate a few cards before you begin, based your character's motivations, what part of the world they're exploring, which factions operate nearby, and so on.

When your solo system calls for intrusion on the predicted course of play (random events, altered scenes, etc.), shuffle your stack and place it face down.

Then roll a d6, and flip cards until you draw a prompt you'd classify as...

1 - "Random" in the current context.
2-3 - "Interesting" in the current context.
4-6 - "Probable" in the current context.

For each card you reject, decide on the spot whether you still want it circulating through your deck. Dispose of it or set it aside if you're done with it. Add it to a reshuffle pile if not.

For example, if you're no longer adventuring on a desert planet, you might cut out a card that calls for a sandstorm, as that would be so improbable on an urban world as to challenge belief. This will keep your deck lean and practical.

To use a Star Wars example, if you had a card with the text, "Mysterious Dark Side Artifacts," you might accept it on a roll of Probable when exploring an abandoned Jedi archive no matter who you are, or Interesting found anywhere if you're a zealous, crusading Jedi, but on Random if you're an Ewok picking over the remains of a battle between two mercenary factions.

Note that interesting can be interesting to the player (for your entertainment) or interesting to the character (Merlin would really get excited if magic scrolls are involved) as you see fit.

You can also modify the weighting of the die roll, depending on the stage of your adventure. Perhaps you want to swap Interesting into the 4-6 range at the climax to keep things concentrated on the main plot, or Random into the 2-3 range when on a desert island far from known context.

Anyway, poke, prod, and modify, Lone Wolves. Just something I was thinking about.

I'm going to start a D&D 5e based story of Goblins now!

I'm thinking I'll go back and start posting APs of these -- I've been reluctant since my initial play tests have a lot of notes to myself, and a lot of adaptation as I go. Not exactly thrilling reading, ha.

It's been a while, but Hanson continues her case. In this scene, she attempts to flip an Ally of her foe. But when it comes to the cut throat world of vampire politics, she might just be better in over her head.
Does anyone know where I can download good, free, and malware free diagramming software?

Yesterday I played a solo game of virtual Invisible Sun, using Untold: Adventure Awaits. My Connected Ardent Goetic who Walks the Path of Suns is called Dori.

Episode 1- I am Legion.

Dori is a character in the new show - The Actuality, coming this Spring on Scryflix.

Scryflix Subscriptions are on offer, 5 Crystal Orbs after a 23 day free trial

#HappyBirthdayMonte

Dori lives in the Lightning Tower, which is a prominent place in Satyrine. He has connections with Merchants and Crafters. Dori has the Power of Summoning and his area of expertise is the Path of Suns.

The opening scene of The Actuality, the Genus Loci of the Lightning Tower (The Tower is constructed from Lightning bolts) has appeared and is expressing concern about something.

She is concerned about a Fallen Star which crashed at the base of the Lightning Tower, chaotic energies surround this star its spawning demonic hand Miners. (A small demonic type thing, which looks like a hand), wielding a pickaxe.

Dori successfully summons an angel who tells Dori, that only a Demon can banish the demonic hand Miners.

Checking his grimoires, Dori discovers the name of a useful demon, but there is going to be a serious cost.

Dori then attempts to divine where that serious cost will be found.
"The Shadow Baby can be found in the Pyramid of the Tortoise, which lies across the Tender River". Dori travels there, has to conjure a key to access the Pyramid.

As the Plot Thickens, I question what is this Evil Master- The answer is: It is Legion

It seeks to use the demonic hand Miners, to unlock Unity and a return the Actuality to Pristine Order.

The secret to stopping this is known to a Shadow Baby or can be found in a book in the Rainbow Library of the Flora Solas, a Maker

Dori returns home and finds the Genus Loci accusing him of not doing anything to help. Dori successfully calms the Genus Loci

Legion has been following this whole thing

Dori seeks to stop Legion, possibly transferring it to another Sun, maybe the Green.
This fails, Legion captures Dori

Dori attempts to escape his bonds, manages to loosen the bonds.
Before getting caught by a Legion avatar, who punishes Dori, by making him cry tears of blood

Dori later tries to negotiate with Legion, ending up with egg on his face but at least receives a counter offer from Legion.

Dori invokes his secret name, but the incantation fails- possibly some arcane interference aura.

Dori manages to speak with the Shadow Baby, successfully forging a pact.
Thank You For Scrying:
In next weeks episode, what does the pact with the Shadow Baby do?
What about the growing plague of demonic hand Miners?
Can Dori become better established in the Goetic Order and in Satyrine.

The Actuality, only on ScryFlix

I've shared some of my favourite parts of solo gaming in the past, here's another. When I'm prepping and planning for group games there are a lot of factors I need to take into consideration, as is appropriate. I have to reign in my natural inclinations to go off on tangents or follow the rabbit trails of diverted interest. Solo projects don't share those constraints, which is how I ended up spending all morning for another Frostgrave solo campaign. My time in Maptool for Dungeon Door reminded how much I like that app, and how useful it is. So iI decided to go all in. I'm making new tokens, new macros, and a slew of other things. I'm not saying I couldn't do this for a group game, but I'd be under a timeline and having to analyse each creative decision for mass appeal and ease of use for anyone who didn't design it.

Long stressful week at work and I didn’t get back to my experiment of using Elder Sign location cards as a story narrative for Cthulhu Hack as much as I would have wished.

Long stressful week at work and I didn’t get back to my experiment of using Elder Sign location cards as a story narrative for Cthulhu Hack as much as I would have wished.

Here is the next step in the story:
Location card is below. This is fairly easy to translate to the story-or so I thought.

(GME, Interrupt scene: Attach possessions)

Walter staggers out of the bathroom clutching his bag, the small journal making it feel like a ton of bricks digging into his shoulder. He runs directly into a guided tour, this is probably the best way to see the museum, and hear what others say about his exhibit.
(GME: Sneak into the group? No)

The docent catches him, “I’m sorry sir this tour is full, you will have to wait for the next one.” (Fast talk-Pass)
I was in the group, and had to use the rest room, she lets Walter in, and he settles in right in the middle of the group.

The docent leads them to a new room, large and dark, the harsh lights turned down to protect the old and priceless artifacts inside. Along the walls on one side are religious cultic masks. In the center of the room is a long glass case filled with shrunken heads, and packed along the opposite wall are very old books, scrolls, talismans, and cups used in sacrifice rituals. Several of them have dark brown stains, obviously ancient dried blood.

Walter notices as the docents voice trails off into the rooms background noise the number of strange symbols, paint patterns, and shapes that jump out at him. One item in particular calls him, drawing him in. There is something fairly familiar about it, but Walter can’t quite put his finger on it.

But the more he thinks about it, trying to place where he has seen it before, he finds himself strangely hypnotized, this object…a palm sized talisman mesmerizing him, speaking to him. Just about the time he is swept away the docent calls to him as they leave the room. With great, uncomfortable effort he pulls himself away to rejoin the group.

Before Walter realizes he is stranding in his own exhibit, rare and unknown mummies from South America. Each mummy stands in a glass horizontal case, some wrapped, some unwrapped, several maps, signs, notes, and drawings lie on the wall in between the mummies. He reaches into his bag to grab his notepad to take notes from the people around him, and grabs hold of something strange, unknown, hard, round, and on a leather string. Very reluctantly he pulls his hand out of the bag, in his palm is a talisman.
(Attach possessions from GME interrupt scene)

(GME: Same one? Yes/remember taking it? No…RANDOM EVENT: Usurp exterior factors)

This was in a locked case! He is horrified to find it in his bag, and now touching it. The mental pull is even stronger now.

(Sanity check: Pass-but just barely-I totally expected to fail this one).

Walter just barely manages to keep his mind from unraveling. He realizes that he is holding the talisman so hard that his hand is cut by the edge of the talisman and starts to bleed. He has never stolen anything in his life, and is horrified that this thing is in his bag (it belongs in a museum!)…despite that the urge to keep it, to desire it, is overwhelming. He faces arrest if he is caught, this war is waging in his mind.
(This is how I used the usurp exterior factors random event-maybe a bit thin, but that is all I could come up with)

(Charisma check: Pass) He makes the decision to put it back…but it is hard to tear himself away.
As he stands in the room he suddenly realizes that he is all alone in his exhibit, looking at his watch he has lost (1D6) 2 hours! Where did that time go, and how will he get this talisman back into the exhibit?

He empties his bag to make sure there are no other surprises. (GME: anything else? No) Inside he finds: pistol, flashlight, smokes, lighter, journal & pen, that strange little book & the talisman.

(GME: Is Walter locked in? Yes / Is it dark? Yes / See light anywhere? Yes)

Walter looks at that strange little book and that talisman and notices something that makes his blood run cold…both have the same symbol. A skull surrounded by lightning.

(Sanity check: Pass-again I expected to fail that one as well)

(GME: Is Walter all alone? Exceptionally NO!)

End scene.

Good question for the Lone Wolves.

I continue on with Wizardawn's Dungeon Door and Tunnels & Trolls. I have spent as much time improving my maptool framework as I have playing, and enjoying both...until now. I've sent a fair number of delvers to their deaths this week, but this one hurt. I decided not to have the Wizard cast a spell, to preserve her Wizardry. So the Warrior stepped up to the plate, and then got them both killed by the first monster they met. Probably just do a reset on this one, since I don't feel like re-rolling characters, but I needed to share my disappointment. A wolf has no business rolling so well...or having an MR of 45 for that matter, but such is an adventurer's life.

An interesting review and demonstration of the Flowsaber with spinning. Interesting (to me at least) because it delves into how the lightsaber hilt affects the display. If you like the wushu Darth Maul method of lightsaber combat, and want it a tiny more believable than winging it, definitely watch the vid. It actually kind of explains why he had a double bladed lightsaber if you think about it afterward.

GodBound - Dark Sun 4e

GodBound - Dark Sun 4e
Session 1 (ish)

Whew.. two days of 10 minute plays later...
Solis enters the first town he's ever been in! A sandstorm forces him to take shelter in the town Inn (of course) and he proceeds to become friendly with everyone there! I decided to roll for a random event while there for fun and got "pursue, passion, mistake". Seems Solis had his first encounter with the fairer sex and like all first encounters, it went poorly. Poor Solis

When word gets around the next morning about an attack/robbery on a caravan and he hears the reward is 100 coin, he jumps into action!

(While mechanically, 100 coins wouldn't amount to even one point of Wealth in GodBound, Solis has nearly no money, having been raised in the mountains. This adventure will bring his coffers from broke to passable. Check out the free version of GodBound and see what I mean!)

A couple questions:

A couple questions:

1.) Would you rather roll and consult a chart (Ruins of the Undercity) or calculate values based on a modifier (Scarlet Heroes "threat")? ie. look up a specific monster stats, or have to calculate the stats for each encounter.

2.) Are there other games/modules out there designed to scale to any number/level of PCs (specifically OSR compatible)?

Today I did a playtest of So1minimald6 that Sophia Bandt posted here yesterday, and it gave an excellent adventure. My scenario was in the universe of X-Files, whit 2 new agents investigating a case of disappearances in a small rural town.
The system flowed well, fairly quickly and consistently, but some doubts arose:
1) I'm still confused about attributes, in terms of mechanics. Do they only confer advantage or disadvantage die on the rolls (+1 , or - 1 ), or I understood wrong?
2) After a result "Yes, but", "NO, but", Yes, and ", No, and", must I roll again in the following table to the unfolding of the question, or should I consider the more obvious to the situation, leaving the following table (that one "1-Nothing happens ...") for just when I need ideas on how to continue the adventure?
3) Since at the beggining of the text it is said that I succeed every time I get 5 or 6 in a risky situation, when exactly should I use that listed task difficulty table?
Ok, the main doubts were these. Sophia Brandt, can you help me?
Anyway, it was a very good experience. My actual play was written in a mix of English and Portuguese, so i think it was impossible to decipher. I had a lot of fun. Since it was only the first draft of the system, I'm sure very good things are coming around!

So Dungeon Door has become a full blown gaming obsession. I am well into my second play through. This time with human warrior Suban and her faithful companion Plink, a fairy spellcaster.

So Dungeon Door has become a full blown gaming obsession. I am well into my second play through. This time with human warrior Suban and her faithful companion Plink, a fairy spellcaster.

It's been a little dicey, because neither of their attribute rolls were all that stellar, and I had to fudge a point just to get Plink's IQ high enough to let her cast 1st level spells.

I've yet to find any Exceptional Items, but I also haven't died yet so I'm calling it a wash. I've managed to avoid a fair number of trapped doors with some quality Saving Rolls vs IQ though. And an extremely fortuitous SR vs SPD by both of them got me away from a Giant Scorpion with a nasty special move and a MR50 when I was down to my last couple of Constitution points. They aren't gaining XP as fast as my previous game, in part because I decided not to award points for room or door searches. Technically I could, but since I'm searching every door and room for traps and hidden doors/containers, I decided it would get a bit silly

I also decided to use Mythic to check for quests from the Fighter's Guild and Wizard's Guild in Delverton. The Wizard's were game, so I used the Unusual Item table to see what they were after. Apparently it's a Magical Talking Mouth. A few more rolls, and the reward turned out to be 24GP and 50XP. I haven't found it yet but it's another reason to keep digging deeper.

As I was laid up in bed I also took the time to create a fairly descent framework for both Tunnels & Trolls and Dungeon Door inside of Maptools. The tiles have macros that let me generate halls or rooms on the fly, and token tool tips have let me mark locked doors i didn't want to break down and traps I spotted in time but wasn't willing to risk disabling.

Now, I have to go see about a scorpion..

"Where do you go next?"

"Where do you go next?"

So, reading +Samuel S. (GottJammern)'s recent post got me thinking about a frequent issue we all run into from time to time--"where do you go next?" You're playing a game, you're having fun, you resolve the current scene or conflict, but you're left with a blank page, not really having any idea of what should happen.

Obviously, if you have a strong idea of what logically follows, your set. But often, you lack such a strong idea. Or, you have an idea, but you're not sure if it's really the "right" thing to do. So, what do you do then?

There's the option of using an Oracle of some sort, to somehow force a new scene by provoking an NPC action. Or roll on a convenient random encounter chart or something similar.

I think, for me, this is where I enjoy tools like "Covetous Poets Adventure Creator" or Scarlet Heroes. Having some form of structure for what happens next helps me keep the game moving, and fills in at least some of the outlines for me to pick up and run with. For example, my PC might capture an assassin and question him--the PC succeeds on the necessary rolls to get the hired gun to sequel, but I (as GM) have no idea who hired him or why. Using Covetous helps me set the next scene, which is where my character goes to track down the contact who set all this motion.

But what do you guys do? I see it as a frequent issue, so the more advice we can give them better. How do you know where you go next?

It was formatted in LibreCalc, so as always it's functionality in Excel or Google Docs is unknown, You'll also need to install the dungeon tile font for it to display correctly. Here's the link for that: https://fonts2u.com/mm-dungeon-regular-inverted-fw.font

And here's the link to the spreadsheet, it works like my Perilous Wilds one did. It will update every time it refreshes or recalculates. I did tweak the frequency of some things appearing, and added the possibility of locked/trapped doors between each new area.

GodBound - Dark Sun 4e

GodBound - Dark Sun 4e
Character Intro

For a long time I've struggled on and off with solo role play, but always started off great! About one or two sessions in I'd start to bog down though, going into too much detail or not knowing where to go next.
This year, I decided to work on my solo role play. After spending a while deciding on what to play and how, I came up with GodBound.

This is my character, loosely inspired by the 40k Primarchs, and Seventh Sanctums Deity generator. I'll post my first session sometime tomorrow. These will be short sessions written in journal style bullets to keep my gaming flow moving.

If the character succeeds than they go on to a second round of a simple solo adventure and then back to writing a letter.

So far 2 characters have died and I am starting on a third now.

You can read the letters here:

After my last session I was not too happy with D6. While the system is simple and allows for cinematic action it requires too much rolling of too much dice for quick narrative theater of mind combats. I needed something quicker and simpler which preferably uses only one die. So I pulled out Astounding Interplanetary Adventures from Scott Malthouse, which I really like (together with the other games of this product line) and quickly converted my character. So far I am happy with it. The thing is, when I play solo I have two preferred play styles: Either tabletop crawls with minatures and battlemaps or completely theater of mind with no props (besides the occasional sketch). If I go theater of mind I like the battles fast and furious without too much rolling and with some amount of risk even against lower class opponents. So here is session 4...

Not to happy with my Ironsworn hack. Anyone has a link to resources about "scripting" enemies or "timetracks".

I feel like if I script them too hard and time is too linear, it takes the suspense out of it. If I get to lose with my handling of time and enemy actions I lose suspense as well ... really a tightrope for me

I don't like using skills in games because they are generally about rolling to see what happens instead of good play. Checks are okay when it's difficult to tell if i would succeed. Is there a way to make solo play about clever play instead of randomness?

Had a question / thought. Have any of y'all tried running a solo game using a player-facing supplement and an oracle / system? Like, say, A Field Guide to Hot Springs Island and an oracle when you get somewhere to determine what's true and what happens? You could just ignore the DM material, use the oracle, and be as surprised as the players when you find out the player-facing material is a lie. I'm sure the oracle isn't going to create quite as interesting a setup as the DM's guide might, but you could be surprised by what happens.

I was thinking of doing this with something like Pelgrane Press' Book of Smoke, but just wanted to see if anyone else had given this a shot.

Hey everyone

Hey everyone,

Sorry for the noob question, as I am sure this has been asked, but what are your favorite Solo systems that are explicitly designed for solo play? (So, not D&D or other more trade type builds)

Hello guys! Since there is ABSOLUTELY NO game material for solo RPG available here in Brazil - just a few dungeon crawls or board games with solo game options - I have decided to translate MISO RPG, from Sophia Brandt into the Portuguese language. I believe that the simplicity of the MISO system can be a great way to present our hobby to the RPG community in Brazil. Here is the Portuguese version, and I would like to thank the author Sophia Brandt immensely for having given me permission to do this (although I will understand if you do not remember, Sophia, it was months ago that I wrote you an email about my will to translate your material)I hope so to be giving some contribution to the growing of solo RPG in my own country!

The Wizardawn Dungeon Door for Tunnels & Trolls was a great success. I enjoyed it more than my two attempts at 4AD. I printed off the Dungeon Door page that was generated, rolled up a Deluxe T&T character and headed in.

The Dungeon Door has a list of 16 Exceptional Items among the many possible treasures you can find. I decided my goal was to collect as many as possible, with the end game goal to be able to survive long enough to find all 16. I also decided spur of the moment that there could be no more than 4 Exceptional Items per floor.

I ran only one character, Gery the Rogue. He explored a good deal of the first floor (I don't run off the page, so the edges limit the size) and found 3 of the Exceptional Items before running into 2 Ogres ahead and 15 Bats behind. He chose the Ogres, and paid the price. They obliterated him in the first round with their 7d6+30 and multiple doubles rolled. I was feeling pretty good about the magical armor bracelet I'd found in the room prior. Turns out 6 armor (bracelet plus leathers) wasn't enough. I had also forgot to cast Vorpal Blade before I left the room, which I'd intended to do since my magical dagger required me to check for Wandering Monsters wherever hallways meet, which they did just as I left the room.

I also implemented a simple Rations system slightly inspired by Dungeon World. To head back to town I needed to expend 1 Ration. To head down to the next level of the dungeon I'd need to expend a number of Rations equal to the Floor Number I was leaving. To rest in the dungeon I had to expend a Ration, rest for 3 hours minimum and check for Wandering Monsters every hour. This was all to put some sort of outside pressure and cost on traveling around. If at any point I would expend a Ration and didn't have any I'd take a 1d6 bit to Constitution. In the end I only needed to expend a single Ration, so I don't know if it's useful or not.

I also used Wizardawn's settlement generator to create Delverton. I wanted a port in the storm to head back to when I needed to patch up, off load loot, or resupply. It worked very well, and could offer some additional RP depth if I decide to move beyond the Exceptional Item gathering goal.

Hello

Hello,

Lomax_Mark has devised some very neat rules variants for #Mythic Variations 2, sharing them also via Dropbox. They restore the full range for the CF, adding a CF reset feature to reign in the extremes, as well as marginal yes/no rules.

With his permission, here is the link.

We Are Solo Gamers

We Are Solo Gamers

I love hearing about everyone’s experience with various modes of solo play, systems, and settings. It keeps the creative gears whirring. But I wonder more about the mundane aspects of solo gaming - who are we and how we actually game.

To start, I’m curious about how frequently you solo game. I realize that there are a lot of factors behind such a simple question, but here it is:

Think about 2017 - how often did you solo game? Whether it was 15mins or 4hrs at a stretch, it needs to be long enough for you to call it a “session”

I'm up early playing with my new favorite find. I've used Wizardawn in the past for running Tunnels & Trolls games, but the Dungeon Door tool is new since I last visited. Essentially it creates a random a random solo dungeon for you to run through. If you check the Rules box it gives you everything you need: dungeon creation, exploration finds, monster encounters, traps, treasure.

The next installment of my d6 Star Wars campaign is up, wherein the PCs make a daring escape down the ice river as the blaster bolts fly about them.

I've included the battle maps I used to keep trrack of this, as there were 19 combattants. Each combat round is written out in narrative format, followed by the round's game mechanics in a separate chunk in order to make it more readable. I left the mechanics more-or-less unedited, so it's a good look behind the scenes.

Continuing on the idea of using Elder Sign location cards to frame a Cthulhu Hack RPG, I’ve never posted any of my plays before so I’ll give it a try. Hopefully this will not be like watching another person’s vacation pictures.

Walter Marshall, archaeologist, 34 years old and lives in Arkham.
Strength:14 Dex:10 Con:13 Wis:15 Int:12 Char:9
(In Cthulhu Hack for a check you must roll under these numbers on a D20)
Items: Pistol, smokes, lighter, flashlight,
Special abilities: Swings & Leaps, Steady hand, Scrounger

He is just out of school and made an incredible discovery of mummified bodies in South America. The Miskatonic Museum in Arkham took a chance and gave him a modest space to set up an exhibit. Being his first dig, this could be his big break. He spent a lot of time, resources and money on this, and it cannot fail. Walter left the dig site early to oversee the exhibit, and left his friend and partner back in South America at the dig site. Just last week this partner suddenly disappeared without a trace.

First location card is below.

(I decide that this would be a book that comes in the mail)

Walter is researching at the library when he overhears colleagues talking about strange things that are happening at the museum: strange sounds, lights, things moving around by themselves (the usual creepy stuff) no one has seen anything yet, but there is a lot of rumbling. This intrigues Walter, this exhibit could be his big break and it cannot fail, he has too much time and money invested in it.

He decides to head over to the museum; besides he hasn’t been through all of it yet, and now would be the perfect opportunity.
(GME: Does he know any of the other exhibits there? Yes/ Is it open? Yes/people inside? Yes)
He walks in and the receptionist gives him a package that came in the mail for him.
(GME: Suspicious? Yes / Large? Exceptionally No)
Walter looks over the package and it looks to be hastily wrapped, and is small, the size of a small journal. He carefully tears open the brown wrapping paper
(GME: Anything happen? No)
Inside is a small, leather bound journal with a note hastily taped to the cover. He recognizes the handwriting of his partner, but the note and the cover look to be stained with dried blood.
The note says: “Keep this safe, hide it, and DON’T READ IT!”
Why write that? As an archaeologist his partner knows that he cannot resist the temptation of the unknown…but does he take the chance and open the book?

Walter cuts the string and attempts to open the book
(Flashlight roll: 1 FAIL, steps down from a D8 to a D6, Flashlight is used for the investigate and research)
The book is somehow locked and will not open, but it seems to possess his mind and he quickly becomes obsessed with the book, it lures him, then torments him. (Lore from the card)
(Sanity roll: 2 FAIL ) Suddenly horror and fear grips his mind, and he becomes hysterical, screaming at the top of his lungs…one minute later (this is the Hack consequence for failing the sanity check) he comes to his senses sitting in the bathroom on the floor covered in sweat, still holding the small journal in his hand. He looks closer and indented in the leather is the symbol of a skull surrounded by lightning.
Walter had never felt peril (from the location card) like that before, and he shivers thinking what could have happened had he opened the book. He buries it deep in his bag and leaves the bathroom.
(GME: Anyone hear him? No / Is he alone in the bathroom? Yes)

End scene

Has anyone played Numenera solo and found a way to handle the GM intrusion mechanic that they'd recommend?

Finally got a little game time in this afternoon. It's been a busy month, so it was nice. I picked up an old project of mine that involves converting wargame tropes to Fate Accelerated rules.

Finally got a little game time in this afternoon. It's been a busy month, so it was nice. I picked up an old project of mine that involves converting wargame tropes to Fate Accelerated rules.

This is my first full game with my draft rules. It got a little crazy, because my rules were a little too loose for creating Aspect Zones. I had to abort, because the entire area around the objective zone was covered in special created terrain.

One thing I started doing at random was adding blood spots each time wounds were dealt. It was kind of a neat visual.

The terrain tiles were my Heroes of Normandie boards under Plexi. The minis were from Krosmaster Arena. I love the miniatures, I've never got around to buying the base board game they were intended for.

Interesting blog post. I've often thought something like this would be a way to go for NPC AI if someone had the wherewithal to sit down and map out the permutations in decision-making (not me!).

Hello!

Hello!

With the new material like #Mythic Variations 2 and #Libre coming out, I am wondering how many people are already experimenting with them.

Personally, I have started using Mythic Variations 2 a little while ago, first in improving Lovecraft's Revenge and now in a new game using Mythic and Mythic Variations 2 together with the scene setup from Libre (or rather parts of it).

Thus far, I have got the following impressions:
Mythic Variations 2: The biggest problem I have is that while theoretically modular, all checks expect you to use the fate check with its limited range for the Chaos Factor. There are only modifiers for the smaller range and not for the full 1-9 range. When using Mythic as your RPG, you are already using the fate chart for skill checks etc. anyway, so the fate check does not add anything.

I have thus far mainly used the Details Check from Variations 2 and have found that sometimes, the initial result can be really difficult to apply. However, at other times, it adds a nice spin to things. My Mythic session has not progressed very far yet, so I can't comment on the effectiveness of Variations 2 at focusing the narration, but I have a hunch that it will do a lot to keep things in line.

I am looking forward to using the Behaviour Check as I always love unexpected content.

Libre: At the homepage, you can download some reference sheets with lots of tables and some explanations, including their scene setup. I am now using that setup with my Mythic campaign, basically first doing the normal setup, then rolling up scene qualities and window dressing and then adjusting the setup before starting the scene.

Thus far, just as expected, this has been very inspirational, adding things that would have never been in the scene otherwise and making it more memorable. Thumbs up for that.

Anyone else having first impressions or ideas to share?

Yours,
Deathworks

This is my first post, but I've been a long time lurker and learner. I usually play solitaire board games, but when I need a break I pull out the rpgs. I had an idea yesterday as I was looking over my game collection, and spotted the original Elder Sign location cards (usually only play with Gates now), came up with the idea of using those cards as a setting for a Cthulhu rpg.

So I grabbed Cthulhu Hack, the Mythic app, some dice tonight and tried it out. It was interesting. I used the cards for rooms (it is set in the Miskatonic Museum), settings, and encounters. I started to use the dice symbols on the cards as a type of encounter or action that I had to take just to help me move the story along. The cards also add a great creepy visual aid.

So far I have Walter Marshall an archaeologist (thought that would fit nicely in the museum setting) hosting his first exhibition when he receives a strange package from a colleague...needless to say strange things start to happen in the museum and Walter starts to investigate. If it goes well I may use Gates later.

https://gumroad.com/ganeshagames we have opened a store on Gumroad. It gives a faster shopping experience than our own site, so if you want our products and our site does not work well for you, get them here.

Why? Gumstore is good for creators because they keep a smaller cut compared to other vendors, and good to customers because it gives a quicker checkout experience.

Apparently I'm on software-sharing kick. Manuskript is a great tool for planning and documenting solo games (or group games). It is similar to Scrivener, but it is free and open source. It runs on Linux, Windows and MacOS. It includes Character Profiles, Plot Outlines and Summaries, a Story Timeline, Threaded and Nested Writing, Useful Search Tools, and probably other things I've forgotten. I started using it on my notebook (Linux) and eventually it replaced Scrivener on my desktop. Below is a screenshot of my Dungeon World campaign notes.

One more question, sorry to inundate you all with so many. How do you handle running a solo campaign from a book? Like a campaign you can buy. If I already know what’s coming, it takes a lot of the fun out of it. Should I just act as DM and use Mythic to see what the characters do?

I recently got back into solo/GM less RPG action. I’ve been running a D&D 5e adventure using Mythic. Recently I ordered Basic Fantasy Role Playing Game. Does anyone have any experience with that material? It was only a couple dollars so even if it doesn’t work out, no big deal. Along the same lines as the first question, my 8 year old has expressed interest in doing a DM less campaign with me. I told him he could develop the world and we would play in it. Well, he decided he wants us to be military men fighting bad guys in Mexico. Oh, and there are werewolves and giant machine guns. What system would accommodate that?😂

Hello, everybody!

Hello, everybody!
Here is my new creation, a document , a supplement, where I adapt The X-Files to Quill, A Letter-Writing Roleplaying Game for a Single Player . It is just a fan thing, it is not my intention to break any legal rule or to infringe any copyrights!
Here you take the role of one of the FBI agents, Mulder or Scully, and you have, instead of letters, to write virtual reports to the FBI superiors, explaning the solution of 4 new cases. A kind of "the lost season" from my favorite tv show from all times!

Hello!

Hello!

Here is my report on my first game of #Untold:Adventure Awaits. After reading about it here in the group, I ordered it, but the mail is taking too much time for my taste (I hope it arrives safely, standard delivery for packages here does not have the best delivery guys (^_^;; ), so I downloaded and printed the PnP version to get a chance to get started.
Less than an hour is a bit optimistic if you write things down even in a solo session (although I can't give an accurate account of the time it took as the session was spread across a few sittings). I found the structure of the game to make it a bit difficult to get the flavour I actually wanted (kids' tv show, harmless).
For dice, I randomly picked dice, having the first three from the base set, the second three from the remaining base set, voyages and actions, and the final three from the remainder of those three plus fantasia to ensure that there are enough non-specific dice in play.

Yours,
Deathworks
P.S.: Somehow, I couldn't place the pictures inside the post?

>>Question 1/4: Who is being attacked?
>>Answer: fairy icon => A fairy is being attacked.

>>Question 2/4: How is the big foot attacking the fairy?
>>Answer: crab icon => The big foot tries to rip off the fairy's wings.

As Glitter Eyes was walking through Silver Leaf woods carrying a letter for Malcom the hedgehog merchant at Magic Stone village, she heard screaming.
"Let me go! Let go of me!" The voice was high-pitched, and seemed to come from further down the path. As the messenger hastened along the path, a deeper voice replied.
"I not let go."
"Ouch. That hurts! Stop it!"
Coming around the final corner, Glitter Eyes saw a big foot with brown fur and a broad face who held a fairy in a flower dress in his hands, pulling at her butterfly wings.

>>Action 1/4: I try to sneak up on the big foot using my rogue skills.
>>Reaction card: green, but, blushing smiley

The cat messenger hid behind a tree. Peaking around it, she made sure that the big foot hadn't noticed her.
Without any further delay, Glitter Eyes slipped from cover to cover using her skills as a rogue to stealthily get behind the big foot's back. The brute was still oblivious about her presence, but the fairy saw her.
Her would-be saviour quickly put her finger in front of her mouth, indicating the fairy to keep quiet and then winked at her. In respeonse, the fairy blushed.

>>Action 2/4: I try to tickle the big foot so he releases the fairy.
>>Reaction card: red, and weeping face

Glitter eyes moved quickly towards the big foot and started tickling him. She figured he would then release the fairy, but the big foot didn't flinch. Instead, he turned around grabbing Glitter Eyes' right arm and squeezing it so hard she cried out in pain.

>>Action 3/4: I try to bite the big foot to make him release us.
>>Reaction card: green, but, worried smiley

Changing her strategy, the messenger bit the big foot in his arm.
Now it was the big foot's turn to cry out in pain, and he released our heroine, but still held the fairy in his grip. The fairy in turn look with increasing worry at Glitter Eyes.

>>Question 3/4: What does the big foot do next?
>>Answer: thief running with treasure icon => The big foot makes his get-away.

As the cat took a step back, the big foot saw his chance and ran off into the woods taking the fairy with him.

>>Action 4/4: I try to follow him by using my quickness.
>>Reaction card: red, and, anger

Immediately, Glitter Eyes ran after them. She was confident that the lumbering beast would be no match for her nimble feet.
But then she tripped over a root and fell. Pain shot up her right ankle. Looking down, she saw that it was not obviously broken. She got up, but her ankle gave way under her and she fell back on the ground.
Being more careful not to put any weight on her injured leg, the messenger finally stood up. Looking around, she couldn't see any trace of the other two. And the woods har turned quiet again giving her no hint where to search.
Biting her teeth, she punched a nearby tree in anger.

>>Intrigue Card: This threat (big foot) has an evil master.
>>evil master: scales icon => Malcom the merchant

>>Question 1/3: Why had Malcom had the big foot attack the fairy?
>>Answer: book icon + thief running with treasure icon => Because, according to an ancient book, fairy dust would give him a chance to snatch a treasure.

>>Question 2/3: What had he done with the captured fairy?
>>Answer: magic wand icon + sleeping icon => Using a spell from the book, he has put her to sleep.

>>Question 3/3: Why did the big foot help him?
>>Answer: necklace icon + house icon => Malcom had supported the big foot's family and had been something like a surrogate father to them.

Although her ankle slowed her down a bit, Glitter Eyes was able to make good progress and soon reached Magic Stone village at the other side of the woods.
She knew Malcom's Trading Post quite well, having often delivered messages to and from it, so she decided to quickly finish her assignment before seeing a doctor about her ankle.
The trading post was a two-story building with living quarters for Malcom on the upper floor , the shop proper in the front of the ground floor and storage rooms in the back. As usual, the front door was open, allowing the messenger to enter.
Although the lamp in the store was lit giving enough light to show the shelves with all the various things people needed for everyday life, Malcom was not there. The cat looked around the shop a bit and then moved towards the back of the store where a single door led to a corridor with stairs to the upper floor and doors to the storage rooms.
Passing through the door, she heard muffled voices. As curiosity got the better of her, she sneaked to the door the voices came from. Opening it slightly, she listened.
"I put a spell on her, she will sleep." Glitter Eyes recognized Malcom's voice. She never knew he was a magician.
"A spell? Uncle Malcom know magic?" Our heroine stiffened as she recognized the voice of the big foot she had met in the woords.
"It's all in the tome I found. The Well of Wisdom ... You know, the old book that told me about Lowheart's treasure."
"The book about fairy dust?"
"Yes, yes. Fairy dust is the key to Lockheart's treasure. That's why I wanted you to bring me some."
"I make big effort. I bring fairy."
"Yes. But I didn't tell you to get caught by that messenger cat!"
"I am sorry, uncle Malcom."
"Show me your arm, I will clean your wound."
"Uncle Malcom is always kind to me and my brothers. Without uncle Malcom we have no home. I want help uncle Malcom."
"Yes, yes. But now keep still as I treat your injury. That cursed cat!"

>>Answer: clock icon + distant tower icon => Finding ways to delay Glitter Eyes so Malcom can get the treasure.

>>Action 1/4: I want to get my ankle treated by talking to doctor Tora.
>>Reaction card: red, but, helpless face

Quickly leaving the Trading Post, Glitter Eyes figured she needed to think about what to do next. But before heading for Forest Friends Inn, her usual abode when staying at Magic Stone village, she headed for Dr. Tora's practice. Dr. Tora was a great physician and Glitter Eyes had received good treatment by her in the past.
However, when she reached the healer's house, she found the door locked. The cat was at a loss as what to do. Fortunately, the ankle didn't hurt that much by now, so it was probably not broken, but she would have loved to get some treatment anyways.
"Ah! If it ain't Glitter Eyes! Long time no see!" Glitter Eyes was drawn out of her thought by a familiar voice. It was Erica the duck, her long-time friend.
"It is great to see you. In fact, your timing is actually perfect. I can use the help of a friend."
"Sure thing. Whatsup?"
"Let's head for the Forest Friends. We can talk there."
The two friends headed over to the inn where Glitter Eyes informed her friend about what she had observed today.
As they were talking, the messenger got the impression that they were being watched.

>>Action 2/4: I try to find whoever is watching by using my rogue skills.
>>Reaction card: green, and, smirking smiley

"What do you think we ought to do now?" She asked as she looked around the room pretending to do so casually.
"Why don't we tell the constable about this? Let the officials deal with it." Erica responded. Glitter Eyes grinned wickedly. She had noticed a yellow-black spot on the wall. It was Homes, the bee. Homes often hung around with Malcom, they were good friends.
And he had obviously not noticed yet that Glitter Eyes had found out about him.

>>Action 3/4: I try catch Homes by grabbing him.
>>Reaction card: red, and, troubled/surprised smiley

Seeing her chance, Glitter Eyes suddenly lurched forwards, trying to catch the bee with her bare hands. But as her fingers hit the wall, Homes was no longer there. Instead, he flew straight into Glitter Eyes' face. The messenger panicked and fell back on her back.

>>Question 2/2: What does Homes do now?
>>Answer: speech bubble icon => He talks.

"Oh, you thought you had caught me? What do you want from me?" Homes flew into the middle of the room and addressed the two friends.
"You've been spying on us," Erica openly accused him.
"Why would I do that?"

>>Action 4/4: I try to get Homes to give away information about his mission by flattering him.
>>Reaction card: red, and, angry smiley

"I am sure that Malcom asked you for help. He knows how reliable you are."
Homes frowned at her words.
"I don't know what you are trying to achieve by flattering me, but I will have none of this. Have a nice day!"
Seemingly annoyed, Homes flew away.

>>Revelation Card: Homes has been targetting this place all along.
>>this place: tree icon recycled => Silver Leaf woods

>>Question 1/1: What is Homes planning?
>>Answer: mirror icon + palace/city icon => Homes wants to be praised by the inhabitants of Silver Leaf woods.

"This was rather odd," Glitter Eyes surmised.
"What d'you make of it?"
"I don't know. I have a hunch that there is more to that bee than meets the eye."
"We better follow'im then, right?"
"What are we waiting for?"
Quickly, the friends rushed out of the inn.
In the street, Homes was nowehere to be seen, but Summer Thought, the flower vendor, had seen him flying down the street.
Just as they thought they wouldn't find him, Erica and Glitter Eyes heard his voice. Peeking around the corner, they saw Homes talking to himself.
"What am I to do? Malcom is taking too much time. If that cat intervenes now, all will be for naught.
My plan was perfect. Using Malcom's greed, I would have gotten Lowheart's treasure and made all inhabitants in the forest appreciate me. I would no longer be a spot in the landscape easily overlooked. No more accidently sitting on me. And now? Now everything is at risk."

>>Showdown Card: At this place, this threat and this threat have captured you all.
>>this place: tree icon recycled => Silver Leaf woods, this threat A: scales icon recycled => Malcom, this threat B: bee icon recycled => Homes

"It can't be helped. We need to push forward. I better go to Grandfather Oak and try my luck there," Homes continued before flying away.
Erica and Glitter Eyes looked at each other.
"Whatcha think?" Erica asked.
"Let's go there and investigate."

The friends got ready and went into the woods. Grandfather Oak was the oldest and biggest oak in the woods. Everyone knew about it.
As they reached the oak, the ground beneath them suddenly moved and they were sent flying into the air. Before they realized what had happened, they were caught in a net that was hanging from a tree branch.
"That was too easy, don't you agree, Malcom?" Out of the tree tops, Homes appeared.
"I am impressed by your skill, Homes." Malcom came out from the undergrowth.
"See? Now they won't get in our way, just as I predicted."

>>Action 1/6: I try to get the net to drop to the ground by swinging back and forth.
>>Reaction card: red, but, smiley with one raised eye brow

As the hedgehog and his ally were about to depart, the messenger began swinging back and forth. Realizing what her friend was trying to do, the duck joined in. But no matter how much they moved, there was no hint of anything giving way or moving.
Still, this made Malcom stop.
"What are you up to? Do you think you can escape that way?"

>>Action 2/6: I try to convince Malcom to give up by appealing to his doubts.
>>Reaction card: green, but, surprised smiley

"We will get out. And then we will tell the constable about your plans and how you kidnapped the fairy. You will be in big trouble."
"But, ... but ..." Malcom was seemingly getting more and more nervous.
"If you let us go, however, we can tell them that you have changed your mind. I am sure they will appreciate it."
"Oh, ... Okay."
Malcom moved to the tree and began untying the knot that kept the net in place. But before he was finished, Homes returned and flew up to his partner.
"What are you doing?"
"I ... I think we should let them go," Malcom obviously didn't know what to say.
"Have they been befuddling you?"

>>Action 3/6: I try to convince Homes to give up by appealing to his doubts/insecurity.
>>Reaction card: red, unhappy smiley

"Not befuddling him," Glitter Eyes interjected. "We just told him the truth."
"The truth?"
"The truth that your plans will fail and you will get into trouble."
"Nonsense. As long as you are caught in this net, there is no one who even knows about the treasure and could stop us."
"Do you really think the treasure has been waiting for you all these years without anyone finding it? Why should you be the first to figure it out? Isn't it likely that it has already been found - if it ever existed in the first place?"
"I am not falling for this. I know I am the one who will find it and gain happiness!"
"Homes?" Malcom looked confusedly at his ally.
"Don't let them confuse you, Malcom. We are that close to finding the treasure."
Reluctantly, Malcom turned to follow the bee who was heading for the woods again.

>>Action 4/6: I try to untie the knot by using my rogue skills and my tail.
>>Reaction card: green, happy smiley

The messenger decided to make her move. Using her tail, she was able to fully untie the knot which had been somewhat loosened by Malcom's efforts. With a loud clutter and lots of rustling, Erica and Glitter Eyes fell onto the ground. Quickly, they escaped from the net before Malcom or Homes could react.

>>Action 5/6: I try to catch Homes by grabbing him.
>>Reaction card: green, and, laughing smiley

In a swift motion, the cat jumped forward and grabbed Homes.
"What!? Stop ... ha, ha, ha." Homes' protest turned into laughter as Glitter Eyes' fingers were accidentally tickling him.

>>Action 6/6: I try to convince Homes that it wouldn't work out by reasoning with him.
>>Reaction card: green, but, sweating smiley

"Listen to me, Homes. Your treasure hunt is meaningless."
"Meaningless?" Homes, who had recovered from his laughing, was confused.
"Even if there was a treasure, it would not grant you any genuine respect. Respect is something you need to earn with your behaviour."
"And what should I do so that people don't overlook me?"
Glitter Eyes was a bit set back by this direct question and got nervous as she was looking for an answer. Then Erica chimed in.
"How 'bout starting by apologizing to the fairy your friends 've caught?"
The messenger nodded.
"Instead of one big thing, do small things. one by one, and more and more people will remember you and care about you."
"Maybe you are right. I will give it a try. Malcom, will you help me?"
"Of course. Aren't we buddies?"
"But first I want to apologize to you, Glitter Eyes and Erica, for causing you all this trouble."
"Apology accepted."
And the four of them left the woods for the village.

Is there a solo gaming resource that is user friendly and more on the "lite" side that anyone can recommend?
Has anyone used Bivius Companion RPG? How do you go through combat with gadgets and/or other people? In groups? If someone or something loses is that put out of commission?

Finally got around to gaming again. Been way too busy lately to do very much. Except for my brief episodes with Assassin's Creed Rogue to mine for future ideas.

Has anyone used 7th Sea 2E for solo games? Does it work well? Do you use solely 7th sea material or do you supplement with an oracle like Mythic or alike?
Here is the next installment of my d6 Star Wars adventure. There's a lot of sneaking around, with the predictable result of the base going on full alert and the PCs being chased by stormtroopers as their plan unravels.

My Wargame/RPG ValorAndVictory/Ironsworn mashup is moving forward. Writing things down takes a lot of time (more than playing) but I am glad I sketched some of the NPCs. The Platoon is ready to leave Gela and move North. The fights in Gela have been hard, in particular for Pluto (who is wounded and currently hospitalised) and Eddy (who is completely dispirited). Tony is in good shape, but fulfilling his vow of killing Tenente Murru has been far from painless.

A stop by the local used book store and once again found myself in luck. The first RPG I ever played and ran was Tunnrls and Trolls 5E. I had been given it printed on copy paper, in a three ring binder. It's since been lost. Now I'm set to play through the classic solos.

I finished a new Modular 5-Room Dungeon that you can use for solo play. Hopefully it provides enough random variety to keep you into the story (as long as you don't read ahead!). Remember you have to alter details in each room based on how you and your oracle flesh things out throughout the adventure. Hope you enjoy it!

Star Wars D6 - Adventure 2 Session 1

The first session in my next adventure, which is a little uneventful, but that's alright. Heroes need some time to rest, calm down and replenish their resources, so that's what I am doing. And I got a new job to do...

A much more successful second outing with Untold: Adventures Await, playing at a faster speed and going for fewer details...

The new series, Grand Fantasia, is a high fantasy with predominantly humans in a world of untamed wilds and tiny settlements, hardscrabble life and kingdoms only cobbled from tribes a few centuries past. The land is under siege by unknown forces, and plant life both wild and tamed is dying, causing death on up the food chain.

Our first episode takes place shortly before the War of Three Kingdoms, in the kingdom of Etricca. The action starts in a farmland, a village with no name. Animal attacks on farms are on the rise, and sheep in particular are being carried away in the night. Pests are swarming fields and crops are being consumed before they even fully ripen.

Our heroes are:
- Gareth, a hunter of the village, whose family run a farm there. His tracking skills are legendary.
- Clint, a local governor and Etriccan Flame, an official representative of the crown. He bears a seal of the royal family, who are distant cousins of his. He controls the local militia, organized of the boldest and strongest from the nearest villages and farmland.

On tracking prints and signs of the dragged-off sheep, Gareth leads Clint and a few of his men to a cave in the Tesslau Mountains, but whatever - or whoever - took the livestock has left, and the trail grows cold. The bones of the sheep are not gnawed on. They are clean-cut and the meat clearly separated by human hands.

Upon returning to the settled lands, Clint and his men discover the locals have noticed a stranger afoot in town. Scowering the villages for the stranger, Clint and Gareth find themselves suddenly surrounded by wolves, in town. The militia arrive and are able to drive off the wolves.

Gareth learns that local messengers, carrying word both official and that of the people, have not returned in recent weeks. Following the latest messenger's path into the northern Wild Wood, they find a small hut in a clearing. It is occupied by an old hermit, known to barter trinkets and perform small feats of magic in exchange for food and other goods. He had not been seen in town for the previous month. He claims to know nothing of the attacks, but the men find his larder stocked with salted meats, grains and vegetables suspiciously like those that have been disappearing. There is no further sign of the messenger.

Upon regrouping and returning to town, our heroes are beset by the very hermit they just left, and the people are crying out that the "Stormsage" has returned! His hands waving wildly, he calls down the thunder, setting farmsteads ablaze and terrifying livestock and horses. After chasing him a distance, the militia is able to inflict a wound on the Stormsage, but on trying to capture him he vanishes, a whiff of ozone and a flash of lightning covering his retreat. Beating a path to the Stormsage's door, the militia is caught by surprise when the old man appears, beasts of all manner at his sides and seemingly at his command. Gareth notes they seem to match stories of monsters unheard of for decades or even centuries. There are huge bears, more wolves, and even oversized insect-like creatures, slavering, snarling and chittering away.

The Stormsage says he is out to return the settled lands to nature. He claims to work with "greater forces" to "balance the debt," before fleeing once more while the heroes are surrounded by the beasts. After beating back a few beasts and losing one or two of their own, the remaining animals fall back with no Stormsage to protect.

Tramping after their quarry, the militia and our heroes find themselves suddenly at the foot of an entire city in the trees. It seems to go on forever in all directions, clearly populated but in seeming seamless harmony with nature. They are immediately surrounded by far superior numbers of the Treepeople of Lofty Heights, captured and corralled into a hut high in the branches of an enormous oak. In the process, half a dozen men fall to the Treepeople. The Stormsage shows his face, and makes claims to the Treepeople that the farm folk are rampant, causing the death of forest flora and fauna. Gareth and Clint together are able to convince most of the elders that they are not truly at fault, telling of similar fates for their own lands. The Stormsage then counters that they have also caused fires that have resulted in the deaths of several of their people. The night is long, and the elders depart, to reconvene the following day. The two heroes are themselves able to escape their guards, but before they can free their compatriots, the Treepeople kill the entire remaining militia.

Escaping into the woods and hiding their trail by Gareth's skill alone, the two make their way across many leagues. Two days later they find themselves at Castle Ad Etricca, home if the Duke of Adia, named Covington. Flashing the total seal and telling of their recent adventures and misadventures, Clint earns the Duke's pledge of his army of three hundred well-trained soldiers, headed by the Duke's own sister, Altea, who in time of peace is Captain of the Guard. There seems to be chemistry between Altea and Clint, though they have no time alone to see where things may go.

The army marches on Lofty Heights, successfully hunting down the Stormsage, who seems to be weakened from days of exerting his considerable powers. Upon his pleading for mercy and offering up information on who is truly behind the recent attacks on all the nearby lands, he is taken into custody and his hands bound, his powers seemingly disabled entirely. Clint and Altea broker an uneasy peace, even a temporary Alliance against whoever may be bedeviling them all. Two of the elders, however, spit at their feet in disgust and storm off, vowing revenge for their kin who died in the tumult.

A peace is reached, for now. But what is the information offered up by the Stormsage? From whence do the monsters originate? Who was the stranger seen about town? Where have the messengers disappeared to? Hopefully some of that may be revealed next episode!

Just a quick impression of my late night solo rpg setup. Started my first session of Adventure 2 in my D6 Star Wars game. The cloth in the dice tray is there to reduce the noise of the rolling dice. For this session I am documenting the old fashion way, which is ink on paper. I might make a podcast later.

For those who play Star Wars (+Carsten Rossner), do you have a favorite tool for planet/system/location generation?

I've been playing a fair amount of interactive fiction lately by a company called Choice of Games. They publish text-based games for mobile, PC, and browser.

I've been playing a fair amount of interactive fiction lately by a company called Choice of Games. They publish text-based games for mobile, PC, and browser.

As I play, I'm wondering how I can better leverage some of their game design ideas for a better traditional solo role playing experience. Things like:

- Stats that rise and fall based on decisions as you play, rather than adjusting at infrequent level ups.

- Stats that interact with other systems to inspire nuanced in-fiction results. (A PC's reputation (known, unknown, good, evil, etc.) acting as modifier for NPC reaction tables, for example.)

- Having stats highly focused on the adventure and story at hand, rather than general/universal stats. (And finding ways to intelligently pick those stats for the game in advance, or early in play.)

- Systems to reiterate earlier outcomes into later situations in unplanned ways.

- Guiding stories toward results that are more interesting than "Did my PC win or lose?" (Examples: What will I sacrifice to win the battle? Who did I save when I couldn't save everyone? I'll stand against the dark lord, but can I keep my student from being swayed by the temptation of evil too?)

Generally, ways to preserve the "gaminess" of solo RPGs when it sometimes feels more like a writing exercise than a game-proper.

This is all a bit of a ramble, but if it sparks any ideas, please comment.

Though the CoG design blog is in the context of interactive fiction rather than solo RP, you might find it interesting food for thought:
