Musing about trying to play an extended game solo... would probably use
the GM Apprentice Deck and/or Mythic GM Emulator with the core rules.
Advice / comment welcome.

If you're doing a free trader-type scenario, Traveller is probably one of the best fit for solo. There's the mechanical buying and selling that really doesn't need much of a group effort. Secondly, there was a few discussions on here a while back about two solo supplements for Traveller, "Solo" and "Star Trader". Check them out.
Ed Ortiz I could be wrong but my impression was that back in the day people enjoyed the Imperium setting. The backlash seems to be more recent, when the hardcore retro-elitists tend to degree that any setting or story at all is heresy or some such :)
Ivan Sorensen Yeah, I"ve never understood the mindset that a setting stifles creativity and forces one to stick with canon. I've always taken what I like from settings, throw away what I don't like, and make up my own stuff. That's why I like reading setting books. I know I can always mine it for stuff, whether it's Third Imperium or Clement Sector or anything else.
Ed Ortiz Absolutely. I see the same argument about playing in historical settings. Nobody is going to know everything about the world, so just use the fun parts.
Our Traveller games use the races and the occasional planet we read about and think is cool, but other than that, we make up as much as we like.
Traveller works well for simulationist style solo games. There is a supplement called Solo which works really well for providing structure to your game, and is designed specifically for games where you are playing as a scout/explorer, a trader, a military patrol ship, or a travelling adventurer. It has specific hacks for each kind of game. It also has a fast resolution system, but I mostly ignored it in favour of the core traveller resolution rules.
Thanks, Rob Cherry, for the mention of Solo. I have that already but had dismissed it due to not liking the central mechanic. Your comment made me reconsider stealing the structural stuff and running the adventures using the core rules. Thanks! 🎲🎲

ReplyDeleteSounds awesome. While I'm not enamored by the setting, I never understood the sheer hate the Third Imperium gets.
ReplyDeleteI'd heavily recommend the mega traveller books, even if you don't use the system, there's a ton of nice random tables in the back.

I like Traveller and the Imperium, I usually ignore the Imperium alien species because IMO they are lame. I think to play some solo missions with MegaTraveller in the future.
ReplyDeleteanother Traveller Solo system is this:
freelancetraveller.com - Freelance Traveller - Doing It My Way - Travelling Alone
I like the Third Imperium, but I also like rolling up my own subsectors. I typically just pick a spot for them on the big map and go from there.
ReplyDeleteI do hope you decide to share your sessions. I'm always up for reading more Traveller adventures, especially character-driven ones.
