I'm thinking of giving up on my AP series for the World of Darkness Chronicle. I still want to PLAY it, but I feel like the recapping is getting in my way.
The thing about modules in general is that there's a plot there. And with the White Wolf one, the plot is pretty overwhelming. As I was working on the latest one, the recapping of the plot and explaining what was going took pages and pages of text, and I began losing the sense of the characters and what they were experiencing in the story.
I could fix it, and make it work, but I fear the result would be practically a novella size series for each module, which takes away from the joy of playing it.
Playing it is the point, so don't feel obliged to do any write ups. If you want to share something later, just give us the highlights, any lessons learned, and other wisdom you might want to impart when you're through.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Alex Yari: playing is the point.
ReplyDeleteIf you are typing it up anyway, please post it as-is, but don't spend time cleaning it up or turning it into a story. Is the background and recapping required, or is the character and their experience enough for an actual play?
I would be fine if other actual plays in the same series assumed that the reader is familiar with the earlier actual plays and can make some intuitive leaps without lots of hand holding.
Another way to do it is to simply limit the scope of your posts to PC's direct knowledge. If things are happening in the background and the "players" are unaware, then there's not too much reason to address it until it walks up and slaps them in the face.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Alex Yari Chris Stieha rule #1 : play.
ReplyDeleteI have similar troubles in writing AP because it's really time consuming (add english translation in my case). I think that a brief story resume and examples of solo mechanics are the most important things in an AP.
See you next week (it's the biggest summer holyday here! like the 4th of july in US)
