In a solo crawl like Ruins of the Undercity, you'll want to determine marching order. But if you were directing a movie, you'd want to determine if you shoot the opening door from behind (with the party looking in) or from the room. If it's a big room, you could pull back to the far end and zoom in, show the reactions of characters as they see this wondrous room.
Maybe your characters are strolling through wilderness. Do a few stock image rolls in your head to indicate the scale of their journey. Like a helicopter shot over a forest canopy or an angled shot down a mountain.

I'm thinking to maximize the impact of design and presentation of the story. Encounters are scenes and scenes have to serve the narrative or be cut.

Here is a little solo adventure that focuses on 3 to 4 scenes. Scheduled to be played in 10/20 minutes. You lead a team of adventurers in search of an epic treasure. But each adventurer has his own motivation... Feel free to test it, it's very easy to read.

Another day, another script. I've seen you folks using the story cubes a lot and I like the idea. While I love rolling dice, I thought I might as well check if I can do a script. And lo and behold: I did.

http://www.lustigesrollenspiel.de/storyconstructor/story_roller.php

So here is my answer to the story cubes. The "story scripty thingy". While I only use 139 symbols at the moment, the script has the advantage of being able to use all of them, while when one symbol on a d6 story cube is shown, the other five can not. So there's that.

If you like the script and if I can get my lazy ass moved, I will add more icons (the script will then automatically add them).

What do you think? Is it good? Is it fun? What function are you missing?

These are some rough doodles of Dungeon tiles from Tables of Doom. Some of them are interesting. Most are pretty familiar.

These are some rough doodles of Dungeon tiles from Tables of Doom. Some of them are interesting. Most are pretty familiar.
The Facets are Trap, Random, SD (Secret Door) Enemy, Loot, and Clue. The secret door table has a variety of described rooms, probably with loot or a clue. Clues help you fight monsters or find good loot.
Some rooms are also labeled SR or Safe Rest. If you clear it of traps and monsters, you are Safe to Rest.
The scores are between 6 and 11, to be rolled on a d12.

These are the pieces. You can write your own fiction, traps, loot, clues, enemies, secret rooms, and random encounters.

Randoms are the coolest. Many of them are of two parts though you could easily extend their influence into multiple story arcs.
Like, you see a shadow dart out of the room. Have it reappear during your next combat, help then flee. Then introduce themselves next time a random is rolled.

I got Tables of Doom a couple days ago, a Fifth Edition solo crawl. Like Four Against Darkness and Ruins of the Undercity (and it's variants) you roll for the room, determine if it has traps, monsters, traps, and treasures. I like the way it does this.

There is a whole additional book of map tiles. You roll a d10 and get random results based on the direction of your exit. Ten results for north, ten results for east, ten west and south. And each room has it's own likelihood of having traps, monsters, and randomness.
I like the random effects. Many of them are of two parts.

So you smell a bad smell. The next time you roll a random, you discover the source of that smell. Or you hear a scream. The next time you see who is screaming.
It has clues which could make secret rooms easier to find or enemies easier to beat, like in FAD.

I haven't played it yet. I spent some time reading it today. I kept thinking about how I could improve it. 🤔

In the first quest, there's only one NPC and he will join your One Guy. Monsters are just attack sprites. I would fill dungeons with exotic randomized enemies (roll for skin color, roll for fur, feathers, flesh, scales, or exotic anatomy) with reaction rolls. Do they have an enemy? An objective? Are they afraid? Curious? Furious?

I don't want spiders goblins and skeletons. I want Cyborgs and energy beings. Insectoids and Octopoids. And traps to do more than damage. They could draw attention (shrieking fungus, laughing gas) or freak characters out (bad trip magic) or just do weird stuff (eyes shoot beams of light, sounds characters make become colored smoke)

So I'm trying to learn more about the website Roll20, how easy it it to play a solo game one there? Also how is it to learn and then teach someone that knows nothing about it or games that wants to get into it? I want to learn it to play games on it solo because I heard it makes games super simple from just paper and pen. My Brother wants to get into games and I want to teach him as well but he lives in another state. Then maybe we can both play the same game without a GM. Has anyone done this before?

I continued my FR/Undermountain game. Some nice encounters. I use red dice for the enemies and GM rolls and I roll damage with the attack roll. That nat 20 crit for max damage nearly killed me, but I made short work of the gnolls. When running large battles I only zoom in on the action of my PC and use my result as an indication for the overall battle. So in the gnoll encounter I was fighting two of seven gnolls and the other NPCs fought the other gnolls "of camera". I might promote an NPC to a companion and run them myself later (looking at you Vanessa...).

On a sidenote: I really like Microlite20 and I think it will become my go to solo system. I have tried a fair share of systems but something about d20 just clicks with me. And Microlite20 for me strikes the perfect balance between rules light and crunchy, it is easily adaptable and expandable, so I will stick with it for now.

Also, I just love my all-rolled-up gaming roll. I can roll a small gridded vinyl map up with it and with the generic tokens and a wet erase marker I am able to run tactical encounters if I want.

Heya, folks! If anyone is interested, I'm putting the finishing touches on what I hope to be the last content update to the ALONe beta, before I dive in and reorganize the whole thing (right now there are WAY too many appendices) prior to editing, copy-editing, and a layout effort!

I've added sections on using prepublished adventures, managing worldbuilding and setting/campaign evolution with tables, generating NPC conversations/responses to common questions, and adventure creation frameworks. They all need to be stitched together better, but right now I'm hoping to get feedback on parts that are missing or content people would like to see in the finished version!

Suggestions for a modern-day, mystery/drama type system/setting that works well with solo play? Support for magic/supernatural type stuff would be a plus. I find it hard to put into words, but in movie terms think Winter's Bone (gritty, investigative drama) perhaps with elements of Constantine (angels/demons) or the Supernatural TV series (a little bit of everything mythology/magic/divine)?

I've mostly stuck to OSR titles, but I've read a few universal systems like FATE/Fudge and played some Changeling/Storyteller games. Gumshoe system might work from initial research, but I'm not well versed in non-OSR titles.

I'm playing a loose hack of The Black Hack with a sci-fi skin, set in a universe that a friend and I developed during a game of Microscope. (I'll write up my oracle system in greater detail in another post, but it's essentially a system of questions with YES/NO and BUT/AND attached to it.)

This was the second session of a short SF dungeon bash, where Appollyon Wave was sent as a Creed enforcer to a warehouse where the overseers have willingly let the site be compromised by somebody unknowingly influenced by the symbiotic Breath (a symbiosis the Creed turned its back on thousands of years ago).

- Previously, Appollyon had failed to sneak in, but had taken out two sentries after she's failed to bluff her way past, though not before one of the sentries brought the (HD5!) autocannons online.

- This time, Appollyon managed to slowly creep her way into the guardhouse and took some time to turn off the autocannons, though she couldn't permanently disable them. She did have a bit of time to catch her breath and also found a vibro-shield she could use.

- She took a bit of time making sure she had a defensible spot, but a troupe of three sentries approached from a vulnerable direction. Appollyon was unable to land any shots from her pulse-SMG, but similarly the sentries couldn't land any shots on her, but when they managed to close in Appollyon fell under some particularly heavy blows from stiff truncheons.

- Appollyon woke up badly shackled in a simple cell, with none of her equipment and with a heavy ache across the whole of her body.

I returned to my Shadowfell solo game and again I survived a very close call. Actually I enjoy it more running only two characters solo. Everything else is too much bookkeeping for my taste as you know I prefer to run only one char. So far I have not adjusted the encounters but I probably need to going forward.

So I'm thinking about this hack of Amazing Tales, ICRPG, and Risus.

So I'm thinking about this hack of Amazing Tales, ICRPG, and Risus.
Characters can have a cliche or core concept which help fill out details, and three or four abilities assigned D6 d8 d10 and d12
The target to beat any given challenge can be assigned to the room (or scene) and a special score for a special challenge.

It looks like this:
Yorik, Knight of the Realm
Sword fighting d12
Hunting/tracking d10
Persuasion d8

Cyril, Cyberdecker
Data extraction d12
Underworld contacts d10
Cooking Italian food d8
Dirty fighting d6

You could decide someone is really bad or disadvantaged and take the lower of two or just use one fewer die.

I just received my two new dice sets.

I just received my two new dice sets.

Polyhedral 7-Die Gemini Dice Set Black & Red with Gold (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 & d00) CHX-26433

Polyhedral 7-Die Gemini Chessex Dice Set - Black-Blue w/gold (d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 & d00) CHX-2643

I ran a test with both sugar & water and also sugar & salt on a bunch of my old dice. They were from different games throughout the years. A lot of them where not true. I threw them out.

I had two choices recommended to me if I wanted true dice: chessex or GameScience. GameScience was more expensive and I could only buy one set so I bought the above two sets for under $20 dollars. That way I could use a true white set as my base die for FU rolls and add the red & black for disadvantage and blue and black for advantage.

The new Chessex sets are noticably lighter. I also noticed they tend to roll around the same numbers. I'm afraid to do a true die test on both sets just to find out that the recommended dice are not true and thus wasted my money. They are pretty but I wanted true die.

What brand of dice do you buy for true dice?

NOTE True = BALANCED. Salt water balance tested for a perfectly randomized and true roll every time.

If it's like the Black Hack, does it make much sense to put stat points into the armor?

Hello! My name is Matt Knicl. I used to work at Wizards as a writer for Magic: the Gathering and even contributed to some of the Underdark stuff for 5E. I made a card-based RPG called Tales of Arcana in 2015 and funded it through Kickstarter. The elevator pitch is that this is meant for casual, intro, one-shot play where players made their characters randomly from cards. You play through a session just like you would with D&D or Pathfinder, but all you need are the cards. The comprehensive rules can be found at www.talesofarcana.com. The first game had 43 fully illustrated races and the second game (the one currently on Kickstarter) currently has 30. The illustrations are done by artists that have worked on other RPGs like D&D and Pathfinder. A lot of D20 veterans have been hesitant about this game but once they play they've found the fun with the randomness and the cleanness of the rules. Thank you for your time!

I have Mehgena (meg-EN-na) who's smile refreshes and reassures people. She would do anything for those she loves. The world is more beautiful because she exists.

The beast called Horgus is the largest of a tribe of beastmen. He claimed her and had her brought.to him. She has resisted.him but he insists they will be married on the night of.the full moon.

His bamboo fortress has one door in front and four guards in turrets and three .or at the entrance.
Horgus can regenerate minor wounds in seconds.

Kail is my hero character. He has a few assets. A reasonably sharp sword, a good strong horse named Darling, and a wizard acquaintance who owes him a favor (if he can be trusted)

The next phase of this game is to carry it around in my pocket and think about it for a while. Will update after the next phase.

Hey all, I've been looking recently for something to help me during solo play, but I've been coming up blank.
I'm currently playing a demigod scale game using a year/month timeframe format. The idea goes something like this:

Year X
Goals for Year: x, y, z.

Month 1
Action: Pursue goal x. Explain methods.
Complications?: Determine some logical complication. Resolve using plot or game mechanics.
Results/Consequences : Stuff that happened as result.

.....and so forth for consecutive months and years. My question is whether anyone has read, played, created or knows of a... framework(?) for game play of a different time span than day-to-day.

Ooh! How to Host a Dungeon is the Deal of the Day today! $2 for a very fun solo experience to create a dungeon with a history and some fun stories. I don't even like dungeon crawling and this game was interesting.

I know a lot of you are into portable solutions. I know I could find a use for these!

Dungeon Cut-Ups by Inked Adventures

Here's something fun for your holidays. If you're like me and like to travel light, these mini dungeon layout cards might be just what you need. They are playing card sized tiles with 1x1cm squares and include doors, pits, chairs, tables, statues, chests and all of the other dungeon decor you know and love, ready to be cut out for use on the table.
It's a simple idea and done well. I'm wondering if I can stick some of them onto those nice magnetic sheets that wargamers use.
Inked Adventures is a small British producer and I really appreciated the personal service I got from Will Meddis, the owner.
Just point your browser in the direction of Inkedadventures.

It's a little shorter than the first one and didn't go how I thought it would, but I learned a lot.

My BELOVED actual play

My BELOVED actual play

BELOVED is a very light rules solo RPG by Ben Lehman. The system doesn't use any kind of random factor; all is decided analysing possibilities, and all solutions come to life when we find a way to defeat an (almost) undefeatable monster. We must create a Monster in a way that seems the most powerful and invencible one.
In Beloved you are the HERO , from whom a powerful MONSTER has taken his BELOVED ONE.
I am playing the Hero ALVIGAN III, a noble warrior from the Kingdom of Autumnlore. The princess, his BELOVED JHAVI, beautiful as the stars, was taken by the evil dragon , The MONSTER OF THE WINTER. Now She is imprisioned in the Cold Winter Castle.
The MONSTER has the power to control the Winter forces and Water. It can be as big as the Castle itself, ou small as a snowflake.
I am trying hard to beat the Monster...but I can't find its weakness...Does anyone here has a good idea on how can I fight against this Monster?

The Dark Eye: Guildless - Session 0. Character creation for a guildless mage using fifth edition The Dark Eye rules for a coming solo campaign.

Inspired by Alea Iactanda Est’s outstanding (but too short) solo adventure using the fifth edition Das Schwarze Auge rules, I picked up the English translation of The Dark Eye and decided to use it for my next solo game. To get started, I grabbed…

Busy week last week and going to be another busy one this week. Frustrating that I can't get at least one episode out, but I am whittling at it lol.

Swinging by to drop off a battle scene. This was written on April 21, 2018, but I never uploaded it. It was simply another one of those quickies to settle angst from the failures of past group plays (e.g. "War Vet vs Rage Zombie" lol).

This one ended rather quickly than originally anticipated. I was in a party of seven: a giant, a dragon, a wood elf, a dogperson (dogfolk?), a dark elf, and myself, a human. This particular scene was a against a roc. Now, looking at the first two parties members in this line-up you would think that we'd have this in the bag, right? We were playing this in GURPS, and my GM didn't want to pull any punches on our first combat encounter. So... we never actually got to fight it. The dwarven mercenaries with gun took care of /everything/. The GM didn't want us to die, because I think to them death equals not fun? (If my character cannot run the risk of dying during an encounter. Then I didn't have fun lol.) So, here I am re-playing that fight in Savage Worlds. Enjoy~! :D

I've decided to create a blog in which to share some of the ideas this group has inspired me. So far, I've got three entries, one of them being a revised version of the Fate/Fudge dice Oracle system. I hope you enjoy it!

My personal A6 notebook to play at lunchtime. Still need to improve it...

I've been thinking a lot about social combat and how to add it to systems that don't have it. It's particularly useful when doing solo RPGing as an alternative to asking yes/no questions, even when the answer is slightly modified such as a 'yes, and' or whatever.

An unlikely source (SPI's Dallas RPG from back in the day) has a cool social combat system that can be easily imported to other systems. I talk about it in this vlog entry on social combat.

Since people seem to be posting their travel kits, here's my on-the-go dice solution: a set of mini chessex dice + a spare clear plastic poker deck case. For quick rolling, just give the case a shake and read from the appropriate die!

I wanted to share with you my solo gaming kit. I've been collecting all components little by little. It's a zip binder in which I keep my Scarlet Heroes book [1], tons of paper sheets of all varieties (lined, gridded and hexagonal [2]), a pencil, and a mini stack of adhesive paper bookmarks. I also include a foldable dice rolling tray, a small bag of dice, GM's Apprentice decks [3], and a set of pigma pens (I'm learning how to draw maps thanks to Dyson Logos online tutorial [4]).

If I'm feeling greedy, I include my dice bag of devouring because there's nothing more satisfying than holding handfuls of dice for no other good reason than just doing it... and if my cat is feeling nosy, he includes himself too!

[1] This is my current favorite. Once Ironsworn becomes available as a POD, I know I'll include it too!
[2] The hexagonal gridded paper is actually graph paper used for organic and bio chemistry. If you search it like that in Amazon, you'll find lots of options to choose from.
[3] I'm currently using the generic and fantasy decks.
