This series from Alea Iactanda Est is a few years old now, but man does it make me want to play some Dark Eye. I'm "eyeing" the hardcover 5th on Amazon now. Does anyone else have any experience playing this game (either solo or with a group)?

I've read that it's fairly "crunchy", but the rules as presented by AIE actually make it sound like it's got a fairly unified, intuitive mechanic--certainly moreso than systems with hit locations and elaborate combat maneuvers coughMythrascough.

  1. Gerard Nerval I didn't realize you were the AIE blogger. Please do, if you have time! It definitely ended too soon.

  2. Charles Swann I've played this and a few other things in two-PC games, or run a limited GMPC myself to make quora. I have a lot of trouble running single-PC games. Its hard to keep the momentum and energy up. I think you'll like it - the system is fairly robust and its easy to dump things you thing are too much hassle without breaking anything severely.

Gerard Nerval Thank you for your solo play reports! They have been very inspirational for both my own solo play and small-group RPG techniques. Your experimentation with subsystems such as your monster mystery for the Cthulhu game you played are lovely.

  3. James Bennett Hi James, I've had the same issue with single PC games. I actually have an easier time playing solo than playing GM for one player. I suspect that the single player in a 1-on-1 game must also have a strong bent for guiding the story, which isn't always true with players (that's the problem in our case).

I'm hoping that using Mythic to GM while two of us play may bring that gap. I guess I'll see when I have time.
