BTW, I've been eyeing the Deck of Many Dungeons for a while now. I just don't have the space to lay out the cards nicely, but I've been thinking of a virtual table software I've seen around (like, literally, a virtual table you can even flip when angry).
I browsed the C&C rulebook, but haven't played. Are you sure you aren't setting the difficulties too high for a first level party? Using a difficulty 5, even for a character with the prime att., would probably give you only a 25-30% chance of success.
I think if I were soloing I'd be more inclined to use difficulties of 1 or 2 for small parties unless I'm at a climax/tipping point.
(This is obviously to taste. I like my sessions dangerous, but I don't like long odds on every roll.)
Just following the advice in the book, really. 1 or 2 would be very easy, apparently: “As a rule of thumb, a challenge level of 1 to 5 is adequate for easy tasks. For difficult tasks, a challenge level of 6 to 10 works well. For very difficult tasks, a challenge level of 11 to 15 suffices. Heroic actions require a challenge level of 15 to 20 or even higher.”
That aside, they were doing ok until the Goblin fight. Too many Goblins, methinks.
Quite deadly.
