Are any of you looking for new PC's to try out?

I'm building new Lv1 PC's to share via this blog & site.
May be of some interest to solo GM's that don't want to build a whole party as well as everything else!

Let me know what you think...

First play of Four Against Darkness!

First play of Four Against Darkness!
Roland the Paladin (Cleric)
Guido the Assassin (Swashbuckler)
Ashishishe the Scout (Rogue)
Ivar the Berserker (Barbarian)

I was trying a new starting were all characters have no gear, and roll 1d30 for starting gold.  They all rolled 13-18. So they walked into the dungeon a bit light.

First room was a trap and a jewel worth 160 gold!  Killed a few Vermin, then left the dungeon to buy gear.

Second trip in was more Vermin and 1 group of Minions. Back out to heal.

Third trip was two bosses back to back!  Ivar used his Rage against the Ogre. After the Ogre, I used some healing spells and bandages.  I rolled a 6 on the XP roll, so I exploded the dice (cheating a bit) for a second XP roll! Roland and Guido leveled up to Lv2, Ivar and Ashishishe are still Lv1.  The next room was a Small Dragon! I missed a lot of hits, and the dragon hit me almost every time...

Total:
Killed 6x groups of Vermin.
Killed 1x group of Minions, Orcs.
Killed 1x Boss, Ogre.
Party was defeated by a Small Dragon!

Solo roleplaying is, by definition, a solitary pastime, but I notice there seems to be a tendency for players to archive their sessions online for others to read. I imagine this stems from the fact that there's no one to share the experience with at the literal or figurative table, so allowing a broader audience to see what happened is something similar.

I've tended to put my stuff on RPGSolo's forums, since I used to do most my solo gaming there. More recently I've started keeping my sessions in a dedicated document for the game in question, sometimes in Google Docs, sometimes in Word/Scrivener/whatever. The RPGSolo stuff is obviously public, but I've wondered where and how to share the other material, assuming I share it at all.

Where do you choose to put your actual play write-ups? Social media (here or some other site)? A blog? A message board? Somewhere else?

One thing, I'm wondering is, are there any good guides on rolling terrain hex maps? I now there are online tools available, but I'm looking for a more "analog" route...

For example, there is a great resource in Stars Without Number under Sector Design. You roll for coordinates and place the stars in the corresponding grid.

Anything like that for terrain hex maps?

These were originally tables I'd hand written out for another Fringe game that never got off the ground. The Excel bit is a work in progress, but I'm hoping to make some improvements as time goes on, and if anyone has suggestions as well. The results are at the bottom beneath the tables, although, I could move it up above for easier locating. Sheet 1 is legal jobs, and Sheet 2 is illegal.

Hey, everyone, swinging by to drop off another actual play. This is my first episodic one. I am running "Fallout 5e: Midwest" (don't mind the thumbnail's title, I changed it haha). I am using the Mythic Adventure Chart (always trusty for me) to help format everything. I use Mythic mechanics twice early on. The rest is being guided with my imagination and GM adventure from "Savage Fallout v4-1" (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxVj6phNgTImMVVxTXVYVXBpM3c/view).

I wrote some Quill stuff, and y'all should too. It's a fun game. It's neat to define a PC entirely by how they write letters. And creating scenarios for the game is easy. It's also interesting because the ink pot, a collection of inferior/superior words to use in a letter, lets you do some world building. 'Here is a more ignorant or simplistic word or phrase' vs 'here is the precise language for a thing' lets you create something new and define it or describe it. A gliding varmit is a saileater, a red ichor is a security ferrofluid, an Anti-Riot Invocation is a halt-in-place spell, that sort of thing. One version of the language can be obscure, or both can be used to describe something in different ways.

For those that use pen and paper, I wanted to link a reddit post I read about the types of pens out there and their uses.

Something I find when I solo roleplay is that after awhile, my hand begins to cramp from constant writing. The reasons are many. Poor ergonomics, bad posture and hand positioning, and just simply having the wrong pen for the job. Couple that with a job in the kitchen that uses hands a lot as well as nerve damage from a terrible hand eczema incident, and it equals a lot of pain in my fingers and wrists.

This thread seems to have helped me out with my finger cramps. It has a detailed resource on the types of pens out there and their pros/cons. In addition, the poster has some good recommendations. I went with the Uni-Ball Vision Elite and the Pilot G2, and both seem to do better with my solo roleplaying. My hope is that it'll help someone like it helped me.

I am also curious, for those that solo with pen and paper, what type of pen (or even paper!) do you believe helps make it easier to do a lot of non-stop writing?

If I disable the Reverse Log option, the questions pour from top to bottom as intended, but when it comes to the Scene indicator, it still goes from bottom to top as if the option was still enabled. Here's a cropped screenshot of the error in action, all the scene indicators are at the top while the questions are layered at the bottom, which might get confusing.

Has anyone played this game yet? I just started playing it solo with the Random Dungeon rules. It's fun and I'm almost done with my first Adventure. Think I might be able to make up my own stories and missions after i get the hang of it. If anyone else plays this then maybe we can bounce ideas and swap stories and missions.

Today I tried Mythic for the first time. I've been hemming and hawing for months because I had trouble understanding how to get started, but after rereading the book, inspired by Che Webster 's great after action reports, I finally took the plunge this afternoon.

Still not sure if I'm "doing it right" and I sure am going slowly, but going at my own pace is part of the appeal, am I right?

Sorry I've been very quiet the last few days. I have a huge stack of gamebooks and Solo-RPGs to play through, However I have been working on a little side project which I'm quite excited about.

Its basically a hybrid ruleset for Four Against Darkness to allow you to run published Dungeons & Dragons Adventures with a party of four.

I will go into a little more detail when I have documented it all a little better (its just loads of post-it notes on my work desk at the moment!!)

Its exciting stuff! and with an open mind and some basic conversions you too can play official (and unofficial) DnD modules solo! I've actually been testing it with Tales from the Yawning Portal and also a third party publication called Adventures in Middle Earth!

Stay tuned for more info!

Can someone help me track down a recent post? Someone, and I can't recall who, shared a post about seeing modifications. Like, you would start with a "PC goes to the tavern to meet the bounty hunter." But, there was some kind of randomizer that would turn it to "PC sneaks into the ball to stop the bounty hunter" or something like that?

Sounds familiar?

Ran two similar scenarios based on a now defunct GURPS game (that I booted from before it went defunct back in 2016) called "The Dead Echo: Post Apocalyptic". I played a war vet. I lasted until we left the city. We stopped by a gas station. There the MMA fighter and myself fought two of the zombies. I was bit and the fight basically ended.

This particularly quick scene was me vs one of the zombies in the opening scene of the game. We were in the basement of some building hiding out. One of the zombies found our location and came in through the basement window. I took up a broom handle and tried to make a called shot to the zombie's eyes (hopefully stabbing through to its head). I figure he was running a granular version of GURPS to the point where using a broom handle made things 'problematic' for me lol.

So, I decided to see how that scene would have gone in Savage Worlds and 5e. It went well in Savage Worlds and I died in 5e haha.

[Open Design] Using Syllogisms to drive GM action (Pt 2)

[Open Design] Using Syllogisms to drive GM action (Pt 2)

Please note that this is just me musing and putting things out there in case anyone has any ideas.

Adjudication

One of the main concerns I have with using syllogisms is that some sort of adjudication is needed to know what sort of content is valid in light of the premises and/or syllogisms. Perhaps the only elegant way to adjudicate validity is to leverage the person’s intuition. Syllogisms already act as a funnel for creativity so this might be enough.

At the same time, a way to validate this intuition when it isn’t strong enough might add to the feeling of certainty some of us seek. What might a process of this kind look like? The only thing that I can think of is explicit rationalization for why something is valid. Basically, justifying to yourself why some content fits the boundaries set by the premises/syllogisms may inspire more confidence in its validity.

Making premises feel meaningful

Making premises meaningful in play requires them to hold a special place relative to other creative sources. In my view, they should at least hold exclusive dominion over those elements they define, which means that you can’t do anything with those elements unless it is through those premises (does it have to be through a syllogism?).

I’m inclined to restrict things further and propose that one should put whatever passes for “plot” or “advancing” the story under the domain of premises (and one other mechanism which I will get into later). This especially means that GM events that would advance the action or potentially have an effect on “plot” would be strictly limited in scope to things covered by premises.

Player Characters vs premises

The only other force that should advance “plot” and action is the Player Character, within the limits imposed by the RPG system of choice. If there is a valid way in which the character can affect the elements covered by the premises, then the Player Character’s action supersedes any established premises for that particular instance of the elements. For example, given the example of cliff dwellings, if the Player Character can through some valid RPG system means destroy that particular dwelling, then he or she can. Otherwise, that destruction can only happen if other premises and/conclusions support it. (One question is, what does “valid RPG system” means signify in this context?)

One thing to consider, is whether the Player Character should have power over the premises themselves. In other words, should the Player Character’s actions be allowed to modify the established premises themselves? This would be akin to world changing modifications or discoveries.

Another thing to ponder: Are you always advancing the 'plot'? What are you doing when you're not advancing the plot?

Expanding boundaries set by premises

I only have questions for now.

Other than Player Character action, should there be other ways in which premises can be changed or new premises added? Should there be an "author stance" process that allows the player to do this? If so, what shape should it take? A limited resource economy?

Premises and Baseline Assumptions: Two different palettes?

Given that my preference is for premises to hold exclusive dominion over "plot", my inclination is to view Baseline Assumptions as window dressing (or "color"). A defined procedure would have me using syllogisms to draw the main outline of the next action while colorful details would be filled in using Baseline Assumptions.

[Open Design] Using Syllogisms to drive GM action

[Open Design] Using Syllogisms to drive GM action

Taking an example from yourdictionary.com , here is a syllogism to illustrate how it's structured:

Major Premise: All cars have wheels.
Minor Premise: I drive a car.
Conclusion: My car has wheels.

For now, while I play with the basic idea, I'm ignoring the distinction between major and minor premises. Also, don't focus too much on the example's content. This could be anything about the setting you're playing in.

Let's say you had a set of premises that described some aspects of your setting. You could drive "GM" decisions by creating syllogisms out of these premises. These syllogisms would guide and drive your content, acting as boundaries.

An analogy:

Creating the content of your adventure is like coloring in a coloring book. When you color, you try to stay within the lines or boundaries. Syllogisms are the equivalent of those coloring book lines.

Problems:

Not everything can or should be driven by syllogisms. Some things should fall under what I’ve coined as Baseline Assumptions-- a fuzzy concept that I describe as “things about the setting which are unremarkable to you”. (See for a longer post on Baseline Assumptions: http://solorpggamer.blogspot.com/2017/12/using-baseline-assumptions-in-solo.html)

So, given all that, here are some questions I’m pondering:

[] How should you adjudicate what falls under the umbrella of Basic Assumptions about a setting?
[] Conversely, how do you decide what should be dominated by premises?

Assuming, you’ve figured out for yourself what should fall under each domain, there are other things that you might worry about:

[]How do you judge whether the content you’ve created has stayed within the boundaries defined by the syllogisms?
[]What is a fair way to expand those boundaries when needed? In other words, how do you evolve existing premises or create new ones?

Some ideas for the last question:

1. Trade a mechanical success, 1-for-1, to modify a premise or introduce a new premise.
2. Or, maybe create an economy with “currency” that you use to “buy” or modify premises. For example, trade a mechanical success, 1-for-1, for currency.

This is all I have for now.

Note: I’m basically re-visiting an aspect of #writingwithdice, which I call Principles. Maybe there is a cleaner and simpler way of doing that.

ROCKET DUNGEONS
Hello everyone, following my previous post "My way to dungeon faster solo", I decided to structure the rules I use in my one-page adventures. For those who don't know, this is an ultra fast dungeon crawler (of various inspiration: Warhammer, Magic The Gathering, Dungeons&Dragons and lots of magic powder!). A little imagination can make Rocket Dungeons a real solo rpg.

The rules are available on my blog. They can also be downloaded in pocket mod format. I discovered this format a short time ago and I find it very well adapted to what I want to do: an ultra light game mechanics to privilege the content.

Thank you for your comments

Stopping by to drop of "Adult Blue Dragon vs Archmage", because I've been craving a versus battle. I wanted to do a "Blue Eyes White Dragon vs Dark Magician" (Yu-Gi-Oh!) scene haha.

Quick note: Use Matthew Mercer's bonus action spellcasting, keep time stop's duration until the spell fully lapsed, and some others~

Hope you all enjoy~! :D

So, here's a log of my first solo game that I've been able to start and finish. I've only had a few false starts prior to this.

I went the way of +Sam H, and used FU:RPG, Fudge to work the probability, and Mythic, via the RPG-Solo software. My own setting, loosely based on Ravenloft, though you can't really tell. And some random generators for names and meta-creativity.

I think I worked the rules correctly, though it was a rocky start. Only thing that started to bug me was the combat portion. I definitely started to lose interest by the end and just wanted any out come...I'm not sure if it was my inability to make it interesting for myself or if it was the mechanics of the thing, so I'm thinking about giving it another go with the same rule set I've chosen, or check into FUBAR.

Anyways, I'd love some feedback on if it looks like I've understood the rules and such, but understand if that's tough to do, not being in my brain and all =P

Anyways, it aint pretty but, here it is.

-3 = -1 -1 +0 -1
(Very Unlikely | 4[d10]) No

The caravan slowly made its way across the marshland road. Four trackers came up on the caravan and asked to see the leader. Lothas, one of the caravan guards, stood from his seat and waved the trackers over to the front seat of the ornate wagon at the head of the caravan. In a deep voice, Lothas greeted the trackers and asked what he could do for them.

Are they looking to trade?

0 = +0 +0 +1 -1
(50/50 | 5[d10]) No, but...

The speaker of the trackers pulls a pendant made of Fire Glass from one of the pouches slung across his chest. He held it high so that the sun caught the glass and sparkled with dark red hues.

Does it cast a spell?

1 = +1 +1 -1 +0
(Somewhat Likely | 3[d10]) No

Does anyone in the caravan recognize the amulet?

2 = -1 +1 +1 +1
(Likely | 10[d10]) Yes, and...

Does it belong to anyone in the caravan?

-3 = +0 -1 -1 -1
(Very Unlikely | 5[d10]) No, but...

Does it look familiar to more than one person in the caravan?

-1 = -1 +0 +1 -1
(Somewhat Unlikely | 2[d10]) No

Does it look familiar to Faustian?

1 = +1 +0 -1 +1
(Somewhat Likely | 7[d10]) Yes

Is Faustian alarmed by this?

1 = +0 -1 +1 +1
(Somewhat Likely | 9[d10]) Yes +Event: Violate / Military

(So, I forgot to add that it is a magical amulet. After I asked if it cast a spell, I got the "no, but+" result. I forgot to mention that, even though it didn't cast a spell, doesn't mean its not magical...)

Faustian swore under his breath as he realized the man was holding what was known as a Linking Stone. Made of varying hues of fire glass, they are made into jewelry that is then magically linked with another piece of fire glass of the same color. Among other uses, they can be used as homing devises. In this case, the other piece was magically embedded into the base of Faustian's skull, removable only by high level magic. It was placed there when he joined the clandestine mercenary unit, The House of Shadows. Of which, Faustian just recently deserted...

Does the amulet have the ability to pinpoint?

1 = +1 +0 -1 +1
(Somewhat Likely | 6[d10]) Yes

The leader shifts his gaze to Faustian while speaking with Lothas, and points in his direction, the amulet in his hand glowing softly red.
One of the trackers moves to put himself directly in the path of the slow moving lead wagon, in an attempt to stop the caravan. The other two trackers move to flank the wagon Faustian was riding.

Lothas, still impersonating as the caravan leader, glanced nervously at Lucia, wondering if he should give the order to halt the caravan, or keep going through the tracker in its way...

Does she give the signal to halt the caravan?

-1 = +1 +0 -1 -1
(Somewhat Unlikely | 10[d10]) Yes, and...

Lucia stands and cries out for the caravan to come to a halt, and demands that the trackers stop to explain themselves, or she will give the order to attack the trackers.

Do the trackers stop moving in on Faustian?

-2 = +0 -1 +0 -1
(Unlikely | 2[d10]) No

Lucia gives the order to attack.

Faustian rolls his eyes and sighs in resignation ( his character sheet says he's a very Flipant Roguish type...) as the two trackers close in on him from either side. He jumps from his seat and nonchalantly tries to evade the two trackers by hopping into the back of the wagon, before they are able to grab him.

Does he succeed? (+1d for his AGILE Body descriptor)

5 = 1[d6]+4[d6]
(discarding the low roll d6, I get a Yes for the 4)

As Faustian scrambled over the wagon and down the other side, Lothas and Lucia dealt with the other two trackers.

Lothas attacked the lead tracker with a surprise head butt.

2 = 2[d6]

Due to the trackers quick reflexes, he was able to pullback and Lothas connected with the trackers chin, dazing Lothas. Does the tracker seem fazed?

-1 = +0 -1 +0 +0
(Somewhat Unlikely | 1[d10]) No, and...

The tracker grabs Lothas and flings him to the ground.
Meanwhile, at the head of the caravan, the tracker at the front advanced on Lucia as she muttered strange words and made signs with her hands. Is she able to cast her spell before the tracker reaches her?

5 = 3[d6]+2[d6]

Lucia cast her spell in an attempt to put the trackers to sleep, but the spell had no effect, as if the trackers had some sort of magical protection. The tracker reached Lucia and swung at her head with his club.

6 = 6[d6]

The club connects, and knocks Lucia unconscious.

Faustian spoke a single word of magic and in his hands faded into existence two shadow-like scimitar swords (He is a Shadowy-Spell-Sword kind of class) and he jumped to attack the two trackers trying to catch him. He lunged and danced between them parrying their attacks like blurs of shadow. He catches one tracker off guard and strikes for a killing blow.

5 = 4[d6]+1[d6]

One down, three to go...Faustian spun on the now shaken tracker closest to him, and attacked with a blur of his shadowy blades.

5 = 1[d6]+4[d6]

Faustian strikes down the second tracker and focuses his attention on Lucia, just as she is knocked unconscious.

The tracker who knocked her out, moved to help his comrade with Lothas, while Faustian moved to help Lothas. Does he get to Lothas before he is set on by the two remaining trackers?

2 = +1 +1 -1 +1
(Likely | 3[d10]) No

Are the trackers able to make a killing blow to Lothas before Faustian reaches them?

1 = -1 +0 +1 +1
(Somewhat Likely | 4[d10]) No, but...

Lothas rolls to one side, just missing a fatal blow to the head. Is Lothas able to get back up onto his feet?

1 = +1 -1 +1 +0
(Somewhat Likely | 4[d10]) No, but...

Faustian reaches them and attacks.

4 = 2[d6]+2[d6]

Attacking both trackers, he is only able to put one down before the other attacks him.

2 = 2[d6]

is Faustian wounded?

4 = +1 +1 +1 +1
(Sure Thing | 8[d10]) Yes

Is it a mortal wound?

1 = +1 +0 +0 +0
(Somewhat Likely | 5[d10]) Yes, but...

Lucia is a witch who can bring back the dead...

Lothas, now back on his feet and behind the last tracker, swings his large curved sword at the tracker.

7 = 3[d6]+4[d6]

He makes a killing blow to the last tracker.

Lucia groaned as she came to. Lothas ran to her and pointed to Faustian, explaining that he had been mortally wounded. Is she able to bring him back from the edge of death?

-2 = -1 +0 -1 +0
(Unlikely | 4[d10]) No

...The End

Wondering if I could please get any feedback on how you think this would work for running solo games? Anything you would like to see added?

Has anyone used Zozer’s Solo and Fast Magic with Michael Brown’s Of Realms Unbounded?

Has anyone used Zozer’s Solo and Fast Magic with Michael Brown’s Of Realms Unbounded?

It is a fantasy ruleset based on 2d6 and Cepheus Engine. Seems like a good fit for fantasy solo gaming.

Thoughts?

Classifying as Actual Play, but it's more just a snippet about how I resolved some between adventure logistics in my solo SWN game. May provide some inspiration.

The adventure ended with my hero, Jianyu, and his mercenary buddies blowing up a smuggler base while half their number were gone to scavenge a crashed ship.

Since Jianyu didn't participate in the fight over the crashed ship, I just cooked up a d8 die roll to resolve who came out on top. The Pretech Cult and the Smugglers were most likely, but I left room for another faction (which I would have had to generate on the spot) to swoop in, or for the fight to get so messy that everything of value was destroyed.

The roll indicated that the Cultists chased off the smugglers. Between that defeat, and losing their base to Jianyu's Merc buddies, I declared the smugglers dispersed by fiat. Their influence on Jianyu's story is at an end, leaving a vacuum for another faction to show up.

To figure out what the Cultists did with their newfound advantage, I took a Rune reading using my Game Master's Apprentice deck and interpreted the results in the order they were drawn. Looks like the Cultists (who believe The Scream was humanity's punishment for using Pretech selfishly) will point their ambitions into space on a healing pilgrimage around the sector.

Unfortunately, this puts Jianyu's one path off his Tech Level 2 (pre-automotive industrial) planet out of reach. I plan to roll a new, unrelated adventure from SWN's random tables. Hoping the fallout of his next quest puts him on the trail to get into space.

I am reading a lot of solo game materials these days as a kind of research. I'm looking at patterns. My question is this. If you were going to make a checklist of features for solo rpgs, what would be on it? Here are some things I thought of.

I apologize if this has been asked before, but has anyone ever tried using GM emulators (Mythic, CRGE, ALONe, etc) to emulate players instead? I've read a few actual playthroughs doing exactly this, but I wish to see more examples.

From personal experience, while it's interesting to be a player in an adventure generated on the fly, it's absolutely hilarious when you're playing GM for imaginary players. Case in point: in one session of Monster of the Week, the designated grumpy character decided to go off on his own via dice roll. It struck me as so ironic, it took me a few minutes to stop laughing. (Unfortunately, I lost all my notes for that session, since I didn't back then up before my laptop died.)

How about you?

I played some Four Against Darkness. Still feeling out the rules. The first time I was wiped out by a dragon. The second time my party got to third level.

I played some Four Against Darkness. Still feeling out the rules. The first time I was wiped out by a dragon. The second time my party got to third level.
I like the flow. Someone watching me would see me roll dice four times, write a note, doodle a minute, roll more dice, check the book, roll, doodle...
But it was able to move as fast as I wanted.
I want to add elements of roleplaying and have more immersive detailed environments. I also have Ruins of the Undercity, Mad Monks of Kwantoom, and Castle Gargantua.
Kabukis books expect you to make Labyrinth Lord characters but that means they can cast spells from their entire spell book which is a lot more options and complexity.

That's the trade-off. Simplicity and complexity.

So, I decided to bring up a list of 5 D20 games I want to play on Solo Roleplaying Voyages.

I've recently bought a board game called Hoplomachus (produced by Chip Theory Games), which is about gladiators and allows you to play solo. It's not an RPG though. However, it has a nice dynamic that facilitates keeping track of HP.

The game uses poker chips, stacked under the character's token. Depending on how many poker chips are left, that's the character's current health.

I was thinking that maybe using a variation of this system would be an interesting implementation for any solo games. Take the picture below as an example. The blue chips are worth 10HP, while the red chips are worth 1HP each. That way, it's easy to see that Eryssel, the half-elf ranger, has 14HP total, while the skeleton she's fighting has only 13HP!

Maybe different colored tokens could be used to track specific conditions like: green = poisoned, pink = charmed, yellow = paralyzed, white = blinded, black = petrified... etc.

What do you think? Would you use this system?

What's the over-under on people who write up their solo games as stories, versus you just keep notes as you play ?

Does it matter what kind of game it is?

Using other RPG systems with Untold Adventures Await

Using other RPG systems with Untold Adventures Await

(Originally posted as a reply to Rory O'Connor and reposted as a new thread at his request)

I had posted a question to him. (John Fiore) a while back and now, of course, am having more trouble finding answers since the posts that may have contained those answers are no longer available.

I was looking for John's advice on how to use Untold Adventures Await in conjunction with other RPG system rules. As I had told him, I do have some methods of my own for doing this, but know he had posted across a couple of different discussions with specific recommendations.

Would you be able to provide either John's or your own recommendations for how to incorporate outside RPG system rules into UAW - basically using it as a story generation/framing device for both solo and potentially group adventures?

Thanks for whatever advice you (or others) can provide.

So I'm convinced that this game is ideal for solo play. There's a mechanism for quests that makes them either more rewarding or just putting out a fire.

So I'm convinced that this game is ideal for solo play. There's a mechanism for quests that makes them either more rewarding or just putting out a fire.

It would take an oracle or two (for creating the specific problem that governs each quest) but once you know what the problem is it's pretty easy to figure out a plan of action.

As someone who makes role playing game books, one thing I love is to make play examples for the books. However, this is a double edged sword for me. I find myself playtesting my book, getting into the example I'm making, then running with it and forgetting I'm making content for the book and not playing a game for myself lol

I've had people tell me that they enjoy the examples in my books, and think of it as something of a "thing" that I have so many crammed in there. Little do they know that part of that is because I get carried away.

Part of the reason I thought to write this post is because I'm embroiled in a play "example" right now that I should really put an end to and write some actual rule mechanic copy lol

Solo role-playing is just too damn fun, and that's a good thing :)

Hey all! First post, so sorry if I get it wrong.

Hey all! First post, so sorry if I get it wrong.

But, I've been getting into Solo gaming recently, and I've read tons on GM systems, random tables, 9Qs, Mythic, etc., and how to GM for yourself and even how to convert content between RPGs and editions and...

Problem is, I realized I can play some modules I've always wanted to play
( Ravenloft! ) But, how would you suggest keeping it interesting when you have to read the module to understand whats going on, but then you know too much to make it fun...O.o?

Not sure if that makes sense or not, call me confused...

Quick Ruins of the Undercity Play Report

Quick Ruins of the Undercity Play Report

Sat down yesterday to play some solo Undercity. I've only run this once compared to Mad Monks and thought I should give it a go - big fan of Kabuki Kaiser's solo systems. The level 1 party:

Fethsheddhean Lawful Elf Magic-User
Blorgeaux Neutral Half-Orc Fighter
The Stunted Osprey Chaotic Gnome Cleric
Sneakin' Basil Neutral Human Thief

Fethsheddhean was loaded. It was down to him that the party could afford more than just their weapons and armour. After a brief, uneventful two days gathering supplies for the expedition, the part set off into the Undercity. Note the green ink on the map - Fethsheddhean (being Lawful) wanted to buy black ink, but the stock roll indicated there wasn't any! So he settled on green for mapping. He also permitted himself the luxuries of a leather cape and a turban. This ostentatiousness and the fact that I managed to roll MAXIMUM HP for all characters by luck alone, meant that I sent the party in to the labyrinth with some trepidation.

Spurning the huge double doors at the entrance, the group headed West through a strangely wide corridor strewen with rubble, only to very quickly find themselves at the edge of one of their two pieces of parchment (don't you hate it when that happens) and then quickly at a dead end. However, the elf, seemingly the defacto leader of the party, detected that there as in fact a secret door - and so there was.

The room on the other side looked like it would make a good in-dungeon resting place, seeing as how rooms accessed by secret doors with no entrance can be rested in without rolling for monster checks. So they set to checking the other walls.

It wasn't long before - despite Sneakin' Basil's assurance the room was clear - someone depressed a hidden catch and gouts of flaming oil burst from the ceiling. Blorgeaux managed to put everyone's flames out before they perished, but they were all badly burned - everyone down to 1hp barring Blorgeaux himself.

BUT two secret cells has been discovered to the North. It was now imperative that a place to rest be found, so Fethsheddhean divided the group into two, so as to check the cells for further entrances.

Soon, however, it was him that fell afoul of the next trap. As he turned to the half-orc to confirm that these cells were free of secret exits, he must have stepped on a pressure-plate or something, because a stone block slid noiselessly from the ceiling and caved in his skull, fancy turban and all. End of magic-user.

Undeterred, Blorgeaux stepped in as party leader and told everyone to rest back up, so that The Stunted Osprey could at least regain Cure Light Wounds (self-interestedly Chaotic, he'd already used the spell to heal his own burns).

After 8 hours, they progressed onwards, finding a grate showing a lighted stretch of corridor, that Blorgeaux couldn't manage to bend the bars on. One for a later delve.

Heading South, a strange corridor lined with mirrors was encountered. In the corner was slumped a skeleton, swathed in bandages. Giving it a wide berth, they carried on exploring this strange, shiny passage, noting that cracks appeared the further they headed in.

It wasn't long before the sounds of a large group of brigands was heard to the N. Rolling my trusty compass-die, of course it was determined they were heading straight for the party! Snuffing out Sneakin' Basil's torch, they tried to keep a low profile, with the thief gripping Stunted Osprey's belt and the party depending on the infravision of the demihumans so as to maintain the element of surprise.

They managed to swiftly move along as the voices and flickering torchlight followed them, before Blorgeaux came across a putrid nest of two adult Rot Grubs and their young blocking the tunnel, achieving surprise. I briefly considered having one of the characters pick up the nest and hurl it down the corridor into the face of the approaching brigands, but decided the risk of a rot grub burrowing into PC's flesh was too great - Blorgeaux and Stunted Osprey quiety crushed them with their weapons.

Soon their way was blocked by a moldy, spore-covered - and of course - locked door leading South out of the corridor, but the sound of approaching brigands hadn't lessened - it sound like there was at least (okay, exactly) NINE of them. The party didn't like those odds.

So Sneakin' Basil began a desperate attempt to pick the lock of the door in the dark (trying to avoid the spore damage if they forced it).

Needless to say, he failed - and soon the glimmer of torches lit up the party. The group of brigands crowded in the corridor. Rolling on Kellri's Old School Encounters booklet under the 'Brigands' section, I determined they were 9 out of work berserker mercenaries, sporting pole-arms. If things turned sour, the party was screwed. 9 brigands on one side, and a door covered with dangerous spores and who knew what on the other.

So it was time for Stunted Osprey to cast the Command spell. The leader of the berserkers had...13 intelligence, just enough for him to get a Saving Throw against the spell as per the AEC rules. Luckily, he failed this, and Stunted Osprey squeaked a single bold word: 'LEAVE'.

And so, the mercenaries, at the behest of their leader, awkwardly turned around and filed back out of the corridor. Breathing a sigh of relief, the Sneakin' Basil began picking the lock on the door, and after four separate attempts finally managed it.

The other side of the door was thick with grey miasmas. Four gigantic, grey, and curiously see-through rats slumbered on the other side, amidst a mess of low-value treaures and trash. On the other side of the room - another door.

Can the party get through this room without disturbing these creatures and out the other door? I'll find out next time - I certainly hope so, since they can assume Gaseous Form at will, and I've got nothing to damage them with.

*******

Good times. If you've got some other stuff to augment Ruins of the Undercity with (such as the Old School Encounters reference) then I think it gets even better. I'm going to try and avoid using Mythic or similar for these outings and instead rely on ability checks and Jeff Rientsien 'Roll a d6 to see' type outcomes. Can't wait to get back in the dungeon.

In my current Call of Cthulhu game, I have been trying out an old idea I had for dealing with clues in horror/mystery adventures. It seemed a bit long-winded to drop in the middle of an adventure write-up, so I compiled it into a rough, 4-page PDF. The rules are system neutral, and I included a buch of options at the end, as I had more ideas than I could reasonably use in one game.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good over-the-top action game? Something to emulate Metal Gear Rising solo? Do you just keep that kind of 'throw the guy through a wall' / 'cut open the APC with my nanokatana' as fluff, or are there some systems you prefer for this?

I'm not super interested in solo Fate - might try it some more at a later time, but I prefer stuff that's a bit more player-facing, less with the meta currency. There's Wushu, there's Qwixalted, OVA, Simple Feng, Tenra Bansho Zero, a Marvel Supers game, all seem to be recommendations for crazy anime action, but I haven't really seen any solo plays of these games. Figured I would see if anyone has some relevant experience. Thanks!

Thank you all for the input for my question about finding miniatures. Does anyone have the links that I can find them in bulk and semi-cheap? I'm tryin to develop a solo board game using the "Solo System, Dungeon Crawl, Zombiecide, Destiny Quest and a little of the Mythic" rules. So I want to find more minis to play with as well.

Interesting developments for hexcrawlers.

I tried adding labels to rivers and trails in #textmapper as these features get names in #hexdescribe. For a few days now I was trying to improve label placement on those lines. Only now did it occur to me that maybe I should check how busy the entire map would get. As it turns out, pretty busy and I don't think that improved placement of labels on those lines would help at all. These labels would have to be much smaller, or the map much bigger, for this to work.

I've long been considering running a solo game with 3 or 4 protagonists run by me, and using the storyline from Rise of the Runelords per PACG (I don't have actual Pathfinder Adventure books on it) as a means for bringing some of my heroes to the same plane, though they come from disparate origins. This would tie into my EverMyst campaign, whose sole PC so far is a disillusioned elder Growth Walker of a nomadic desert-faring tribe whose identity is shattered when he comes to realize he doesn't truly know all there is to know of his world, in discovering a Linking Book in a well-guarded library keep in the one immense city his world supports, whose origins date back to a handful of D'ni trying to escape the purge wrought by Veovis and A'gaeris. Needless to say they kept enough materials to author new Books. However, one or all the central characters also discover they possess spherewalking abilities when they accidentally pass through a gate, which may be seen as a parallel to the Book linking.

Veovis and A'gaeris, whose actions led to the destruction of the millennia-and-Age/world-spanning D'ni empire overnight, and whose supposed only survivors (Anna, a human archaeologist, and her half-D'ni son Ghen) fled D'ni in search of peace above ground in the hard desert life she'd already known with her fellow archaeologist father before he passed. Ghen grew up resenting Anna, returned to D'ni and eventually brought his son, Atrus, to help him study the Art of writing and authoring new worlds. Atrus turned against him when he realized his machinations we less than benevolent, after falling in love with Catherine, a denizen of one of Ghen's ages with imaginative Age writing skills herself. All of these characters show up in fiction and in the various Myst-series games.

Oh crap. My whole party just bit it in Four Against the Darkness. Three were immediately turned to stone in an encounter with a Medusa. The fourth (a rogue) had a ring of teleportation and jumped back into the prior room. Then he came charging back in, fought the Medusa, and with one wound left caused her to break morale and run. He then proceeded to flee the dungeon. In the very last room he ran into some rats ... which killed him. LOL. No rescue party, I guess.

After a longer break I continued my solo Keep on the Shadowfell adventure. Things are looking grim. I lost half my party to an overwhelming hobgoblin force in level 2 of the dungeon. Their phalanx soldier ability combined with the powerful opponent rule made them tougher as anticipated.

Hello all

Hello all,

Newbie asking for help. I am a little bit lost regarding solo roleplaying, so would like to ask for good intro pages. Mythic and stuff like that is giving me a hard time here :/ and I am fairly sure there are good introduction pages to solo RPGing using more newbie-friendly methods and engines. As such I love here to ask about good pages and maybe even rulebooks for solo playing. I am not much into dungeon crawling myself, so other rulebooks might be preferred (even if I do not oppose crawling either!). So, where do you think I should be starting? Thank you all a lot in advance!!!

I go back and forth between super-light systems and heavier ones — I think Ironsworn is next, as a sort of in-between selection — and I decided to get back to one of my slightly crunchier games. This one's a wuxia tale about a taiji student in a version of Imperial China, on a quest with a fabled weapon in tow, and it's early days yet in terms of storyline.

Because I've moved forward with mixing and matching GME mechanics and additional complexity as a result, I think I may incorporate some of the "advanced" elements of Mythic I haven't used thus far. I'm interested in seeing how letting go of the plot as much as possible will influence both the direction and fun of playing the story. I can't give EVERYTHING over to an oracle, but I'd like to see how far I can go without breaking things.

Spent my lunch break making a party for Four Against Darkness. I drew them also.

I will begin the crawl when I get home from work.

Not sure if this has been brought up here yet but I just caught wind of this, might be of interest to some.
