First play of Four Against Darkness!

First play of Four Against Darkness!
Roland the Paladin (Cleric)
Guido the Assassin (Swashbuckler)
Ashishishe the Scout (Rogue)
Ivar the Berserker (Barbarian)

I was trying a new starting were all characters have no gear, and roll 1d30 for starting gold.  They all rolled 13-18. So they walked into the dungeon a bit light.

First room was a trap and a jewel worth 160 gold!  Killed a few Vermin, then left the dungeon to buy gear.

Second trip in was more Vermin and 1 group of Minions. Back out to heal.

Third trip was two bosses back to back!  Ivar used his Rage against the Ogre. After the Ogre, I used some healing spells and bandages.  I rolled a 6 on the XP roll, so I exploded the dice (cheating a bit) for a second XP roll! Roland and Guido leveled up to Lv2, Ivar and Ashishishe are still Lv1.  The next room was a Small Dragon! I missed a lot of hits, and the dragon hit me almost every time...

Total:
Killed 6x groups of Vermin.
Killed 1x group of Minions, Orcs.
Killed 1x Boss, Ogre.
Party was defeated by a Small Dragon!

  1. 4x Wizards or 4x Elves sounds fun...

  2. Richard Burley More to try to cheat the system then for RP reasons. All 4 character with Escape spell? No more death!

    4x Wizards could have:
    • 4x Fireballs (Homebrewed to not work on Bosses)
    • 4x Sleep (Homebrewed to only work on Vermin)
    • 4x Escape (Homebrewed to not work during combat and requires a Wondering Monster roll)

    Or
    • 8x Lightning (Homebrewed to be the only spell that works on Bosses)
    • 4x Escape (Homebrewed to not work during combat and requires a Wondering Monster roll)

Both groups would have to watch out for monsters that can put a condition on a character that requires the Bless spell to remove. Those cost 100 gold!

All HP & Spell Slots recover when you return to town! Though you could play Rules as Written. If you don't kill EVERYTHING on the first turn, all of your characters cast Escape instead of a Defense roll. You would never take damage!
