Has anyone played Numenera solo and found a way to handle the GM intrusion mechanic that they'd recommend?

  1. I’ve messed around with the Cypher System a little. My solution for GM Intrusions is pretty basic; in essence I’ve just made it so that while as written a free (no xp given) GM Intrusion occurs on a roll of 1 on the d20, on a 2 or 3 you get an GM Intrusion that offers xp. It also adds some symmetry to the dice; on the high end as written there’s extra benefits to rolling 18, 19, or 20. Like I say, it’s a pretty simple house rule, and I’d probably recommend running a GME with random events and suggest considering those as possible GM intrusions as well, but I’ve been able to have some fun with just the change to the dice roll. My trouble so far with Numenera/Cypher System has been trying to figure out how to determine when I should give/get rewards for “discovery”; I typically feel like I’m just giving myself xp if I try to award it through anything that isn’t mechanical or narratively defined from the outset (eg. accomplishment of an explicit player goal). Anyway, hopefully that helps, and if you think of/know of a way to handle that discovery do thing, let me know. And good luck! The setting is great and the system is pretty fun once you get it down.

  2. Zack MacDonald Perfect! Yeah, I haven't thought through the XP part yet. Maybe another simple solution would work here: you get a set number of XP per scenario or adventure? Will definitely post if I come up with something I like. I love the setting, but I have to say I'm not actually too excited about the Cypher system. This is mainly because I think standard D&D-ish rules work just fine for most things and don't feel like learning a new set. But we'll see, maybe I'll be won over.

  3. I am glad to see that people are trying Numenera/Cypher solo. I like a lot of the mechanics of Cypher System (at least in concept) and would like to play more, but my gaming groups really pull toward D&D.
In fact, I tried to run a game and half the group revolted about four sessions in. There is more to that story, but suffice it to say, my group won't be playing Cypher or Numenera anytime soon.
