Sicily 1943 Session:1 – 10 July 1943
I have played a first (long) session with Valor&Victory (hex-based wargame) and Ironsworn. When I start a new campaign, I am always enthusiastic, so my current feelings might not be reliable, but I think the mashup can work wonderfully. In particular, the second battle I played was nothing particularly interesting per se. But the RPG intermezzo after the first battle (the amphibious landing at Gela) added interesting background and detail. The characters were motivated to capture the buildings not only because they had been ordered to so, but also because they knew they could have rested there for a few hours. And one of the Characters (the Italian-American Tony) interacted with a civilian gaining personal motivation to defeat the fascist leader. The fact that they miserably failed was amply compensated by the richness of the background story. I hope that others will try Ironsworn and share their experiences: my impression is that it is a great solo story-telling tool.

Todd Zircher Thank you, Todd. I guess I should add a disclaimer somewhere stating that my intent is playing with plastic toys, rather than being historically accurate :)
ReplyDeleteIn the interest of war movies, you can’t have a squad without an Italian from the Bronx :-)
