Today I tried Mythic for the first time. I've been hemming and hawing for months because I had trouble understanding how to get started, but after rereading the book, inspired by Che Webster 's great after action reports, I finally took the plunge this afternoon.

Today I tried Mythic for the first time. I've been hemming and hawing for months because I had trouble understanding how to get started, but after rereading the book, inspired by Che Webster 's great after action reports, I finally took the plunge this afternoon.

Still not sure if I'm "doing it right" and I sure am going slowly, but going at my own pace is part of the appeal, am I right?

  1. "Doing it right" in Mythic comes with practice, but it's as much about internalising the rules as it is about finding your own rhythm with them.

  2. If you use a pc, notebook or laptop as part of your solo RPG, then you can semi automate Mythic by using an emulator. I have built a GME for Mythic that I use and I am happy to share. Using a app / program means you only really need to understand how it works (ie chaos factor, likelihood, threads, scenes, etc) not worry about using the tables etc.

I understand where you’re coming from. The question of when to adjudicate things myself and when to consult the Oracle has been one of my favorite preoccupations.

My own preference is to get all GM input from a tool. Predictably, the first time I used Mythic, I asked it about every single thing a GM would control, otherwise it didn’t really feel “fair.” That’s my sweet spot and eventually you’ll find yours.

I would recommend that if you don’t want to free form too much (according to your subjective definition of “too much”), you think about implementing a simple structure around play (on top of what Mythic already provides).

You could, for example, use the Tiny Details process to guide your free form, maybe allowing yourself a set number of Tiny Details paragraphs before engaging Mythic. I’m even thinking of awarding myself “free form “ coins for each question I ask Mythic and spending them to establish free form details.
