So, I don't know who James D'Amato is (maybe he's brilliant, I don't know) but there's a pretty decent number of Solo games and tools. Some explicitly designed for Solo play, others for GMless play, and others as a combination. And that's not even talking about Game Books and the like.
I mean, this might be awesome, but I'm not sure we need someones tossed off solo engine given all the options we do have.
D’Amato does the One Shot and Campaign (SWRPG) podcasts, pretty sure. They’re funny , I think, but they seemed more about the humor and less about the story and the game, or at least for my taste. Maybe their humor just isn’t my bag (the McElroys, however...).
Anyways, I’m not sure this is going to have anything for actual solo play beyond probing questions to ask about backstory. The Amazon description isn’t super helpful in that regard.
I’m also not sure why shade is being thrown at this without people having even read it. A few of the popular solo games here are little more than prompt and write at their heart, so this would be no different. It actually sounds like it might be helpful as game that helps you create a character for another game.
I felt the same way as Todd did about a year ago. As a "veteran" solo GM/player I have my own system that works for me. I am more mindful now that this not the case for everyone, veteran or starting a day ago.
I think any guide/supplement/tool that can help someone find a better understand of their relationship between Author, Actor, and Audience should be encouraged and celebrated~
I wonder how universal this is, fantasy rpg may be the most popular genre, but people play in different settings. I've added it to my wish list, but will want to check it out in a bricks and mortar shop before buying. Jame's D'Amato also kickstarted and played in awesome "Woman With Hollow Eyes", adventuring in the Invisible Sun with Darcy Ross as the GM. That is available on YouTube and the OneShot Twitch Channel.

I’d thumb through it at Barnes and Noble, though.
Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI'm interested in the book. Unfortunately I see that it doesn't come out till October.
ReplyDeleteI like table top with miniatures solo play, would that work for me or would I need to go find something else?
ReplyDeleteIt doesn’t sound like that to me Mike Taylor . You can look at the Twitter feed for more details.
ReplyDeleteThanks
