oh, nice. group or solo play tabletop MOBA. I have been wanting to make a tower defense RPG for a while, and this might do the trick. You can even make your own species and such! I haven't heard of the author before. Anyone know who they are?

  1. Pardon my ignorance, but what's a moba game?

  2. Multiplayer online battle. I have only played them a couple times but liked them. I like tower defense games, which are kind of similar. place buildings and units in a map and defeat enemy waves.

  3. Stephan Beal MOBA mixes the strategy of miniature war game, with the fast pace action of a first person shooter, and the character development of a RPG video game.

They tend to be fantasy based. Usually in teams of 3 PCs vs 3 PCs or 5vs5. Game tend to last 15-60 minutes.

Star Wars: X-Wing miniatures with role-playing, leveling up, and gear to buy, is what I would think of for a MOBA Pen & Paper RPG.

  4. This game sounds interesting! Couldn't find any reviews of it though. Not will to spend $5 off of the DTRPG discription alone.

  6. I put a comment on the Drivethru page but haven't heard back. Preview shows that you can buy and upgrade bildings, but that's all it shows. Tempted to just get it.

  7. I picked up since I have some credits on my DTRPG account, But, it will probably be a few days before I can get to reading it. Will post my thoughts if no one beats me to it. :-)

  8. Oh, cool. Reminds me that the author posted that it's a bit fiddly for tower defense. He said that if you wanted to do tower defense you should change it so one or two its takes out a unit.

  9. Interesting project. If you play it out, you'd certainly would get your money's worth out of it in play time. It could use an editor's pass to polish up the language. I would have laid it out differently, but all the info is there. Can it be mined for ideas? A little bit, you could certainly grab the base building elements although you might want want to use a combat procedure that is less 'gamey' depending on your preferences. The human and orc forces and heroes offer a solid base and the system is easily hackable for other fantasy races or even genres.

I could easily see using this as your 'war simulator' in parallel with some other game. Does it work for tower defense? Not quite, I can see battles going back and forth with the advances driving your economic and military machine. You could probably build a much more linear custom campaign with it.

Recommendation? Sure, if you like reading rule systems and thinking about how to customize or hack those systems. Yes, if you want a fairly simple war making system that won't drive you crazy. It's not a must buy for your average solo gaming, but the rules maven/game designer in me enjoyed reading it.

  10. I'd take this as a solid recommendation.

  11. Sure, if you follow the built-in campaign, it even has some story going for it. What might be an interesting design challenge would be to make it a procedural campaign where you don't get all the info until you commit.
