Has anyone used Bivius Companion RPG? How do you go through combat with gadgets and/or other people? In groups? If someone or something loses is that put out of commission?

  1. It says I can use the gadget stats and the character stats at the same time- how?

  2. Don't have an answer, but curious to see what others have to say.

  3. starships as gadget:
define the stats you want to use (remember that low means average)

    Romulan bird of prey:

    crew quality: low
    warp speed: low
    impulse speed: low
    sensors: low
    weapons: high
    cloacking device: high

    Starfleet cruise Enterprise

    crew quality: high
    warp speed: high
    impulse speed: high
    weapons: low
    shields: low
    sensors low

    scene 1
Kirk wants to spot the romulan ship:

    (Enterprise)sensors vs (Romulan)cloaking device = 25% of success

    low vs high

    round 1:
YES: enterprise sensors find a trace
    round 2:
    NO: trace lost

Enterprise cannot find the enemy ship for awhile
(Enterprise)sensors stat is lowered from low level to null for the rest of the encounter

    Scene 2:
    romulan vs enterprise:
the Romulan Captain orders a surprise attack, a plasma torpedo is launched

Kirk has few secs to give orders, what he can do?
(Enterprise)shields stat is low, this gives only a 25% of success vs a plasma torpedo

but he can orders full speed backwards
(Enterprise)impulse speed is high vs (Romulan)weapons = 50% of success

if the impulse drive stat is low because it received damage in a previous scene then the chance of success is only 25%,
but the Enterprise crew (crew quality high) can find another way to survive to this threat (Mr Spock?, Scotty?)
(Enterprise)crew quality is high vs (Romulan)weapons = 50% of success

other than the gadget stats you can use a character stat if it makes sense, for example Kirk's strategy, Spock's scientific knowledge, Scott's engineering skill etc.

    same thing with army unit:
define the size of the units and the stats (you can use those of an actual wargame), for example an historical medieval wargame:

stats: defensive factor, range, offensive factor, morale, quality, movement

    Heavy cavalry=
    defensive factor high
    offensive factor high
    morale low
    quality low
    movement high

    Elite heavy cavalry=
    defensive factor high
    offensive factor high
    morale high
    quality high
    movement high

    Crossbowmen=
    defensive factor low
    offensive factor high
    range high
    morale low
    quality low
    movement low

  4. Clarified, bonus points for using Star Trek reference. When using individual characters do cliches overlap or used separately? Say warrior and axe?

  5. Ovy Ortega ty :)
gadgets can be used to simulate starships or mecha but usually they are not basic equipment in Bivius, they are special items.
    for example in Bivius Tunnels&Dragons:
if a character with the Warrior class uses an axe in a fight, the axe is not a different stat therefore he must use his class. but if the axe is a high quality de luxe axe (or an average magic axe) then it is considered another Stat of the character (Good-Weapon) and the character can use both stats in a fight.
if the axe is a magic relic weapon then it's a gadget, defined in more detail with a series of stats: type, spells and willpower.
the fortunate warrior can use his class but also he can use every stat of the magic relic that seems appropriate to the situation (probably spells).

  6. stats are a pool of levels.
one stat for one test, what means a failure depends on the situation (in doubt ask B.R.O.)
it's a flexible ruleset and you basically can adapt it to different situation, in Bivius T&D a more detailed combat was needed and a "fight" is played as a series of tests, using the same stat or one from the pool of available stats. if a group fight the same threat then the pool of available stats grows. one stat for one test.

  7. lino pang So it has a short (two step?) death spiral in the most favorable conditions for both sides? Unless you can narratively bringing in another Stat of the character, or a Gadget? Hope I am getting it right.
