Question about 4AD--how easy is it bring in elements of D&D to it--spells, monsters, magic items, or the like?

Question about 4AD--how easy is it bring in elements of D&D to it--spells, monsters, magic items, or the like?

Also, are all the dungeons "one shots," or can one do a "megadungeon" type scenario?

  1. I've not tried importing, but it's basically all d6 + modifiers vs level. So if you can port it to that, you're good, keeping in mind most monsters have 1 hitpoint and bosses have several.

There's a Four Against the Abyss expansion for level 5+ characters that ups the dice to d8s and adds more complexity, too (another $8). Not sure if it provides for different / multilevel maps.

In general, your characters persist between adventures, so I don't see why you couldn't do a megadungeon. You'll just have to make up some rules for adding stairs, etc. and perhaps ignore the other rules about returning to a dungeon (if you need to leave for some reason). Some of the adventure modules use pregenerated maps instead of random generation, so as long as you're randomizng room contents/encounters (ie. keeping some things a surprise), that opens the door for all sorts of maps (I'm going to try some geomorphs next time).

You could really just eschew 4AD and use whatever rules you want coupled with similar tables for generating your dungeon. The nice thing about 4AD is it's all done for you in the same tin (and perhaps minimizes the die rolls).

That's why I want to try it out, as my dream is a "one tin" D&D solo game. I might end up blending this with Scarlet Heroes and 1st Ed, but I want to play it vanilla first.

  3. It's definitely fun as-is! I've read you can get 15-20ish games out of it before you "experience" all the base game has to offer (I've only played 5 or so), but there's the expansion and plenty of add-on modules after that, or you can start doing your own crazy stuff.

I'd be interested to hear where you go with it, and how you find my game board if you end up using it!
