I decided to continue my Frostgrave almost-campaign. I haven't been improving the wizards or their warbands, but the battles keep adding to an open ended narative.

Today Azrael and Tundra have both mobilized their followers on response to a new find! An abandoned conclave has been found in the forested outskirts of Frostgrave.

There had been rumors of this location for many years, but somehow it had eluded searchers until now. Along with those rumors came a warning as well. The former head research sorcerer was done in by his apprentice. His vengeful spirit is thought to roam the grounds inviting tresspassers to share his fate!

On the game mechanics, I'm playing a much smaller board this time. The game rules are meant for 28mm miniatures with measurements in 1" increments in 3'x3' board. Lego Bits are closer to 15mm scale, so I've converted all measurements to centimeters to scale it down in a simple way. So a board at 36" to a side became 36cm to a side. I'll be interested to see how the more condensed field of battle plays out.

  1. I haven't actually read all of these posts but I've enjoyed seeing the pieces come together and did read this one. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Nick Carter As my kids will attest, I'm predisposed to ramble so I don't blame anyone for not reading all the things I type. As for the pieces coming together, it's been a lot of fun. A friend called it to found object gaming, which is a phrase I've already stolen for sure.

  4. Last night, I was looking at some online archives of past Lego kits and reminiscing over all the Castle sets from the early 90s my friends and I had. It was an amazing part of childhood.

It doesn't seem like they have a comparable series now -- 4 or 5 different factions of characters in the same medieval/fantasy milieu? There were Crusaders, Black Knights, Forestmen, Wolfpack, and later, Dragon Knights. If nothing else, it seems like prices are double what they used to be (or is inflation to blame).

I'm not sure if it's sad or ironic that 25 years later I'm wishing I still had all those legos... Thanks Geoff Osterberg -- I mostly blame you. I am, however, giving my almost 4 son his first set of "real" Legos for Christmas this year, so maybe I'll yet get to relive my childhood (and maybe start him early on wargames?) Hahaha!

  5. I like the idea of the smaller scale. Something that could be played in a nook or the corner of a desk for when you don't have a large space to work with. Given the holidays, table time is at a premium, so I can't leave a game there for any length of time.
