Would there be any interest in a "shared" solo game? I'm thinking it would be fun to get a small group together, start from a shared point, and then see which way our individual games go. Like, we would have a genre and an initial prompt, but after that we take it in our own directions. Then, we all post our play throughs and can kind of compare and contrast what happened.
That is a fun idea. It reminds me of me and my friends in high school sitting together and playing the same single player game. I think it would work really well with games that are a more structured. Even something like The Beast where all the players could get the same prompts, but interpret them in different ways.
ReplyDeleteThat does sound pretty fun.
ReplyDeleteI guess it wouldn't even matter what rules each person uses,as long as we agree on the broad basics of the world.
Some people could be movers and shakers, some could just a guy scratching out a living etc.
That'd be interesting.
ReplyDeleteI've never done a solo game before. But if this happens I may attempt it.
ReplyDeleteTor Droplets Honestly my experience is pretty limited, mainly Mythic and ALONe. What's "The Beast"--I couldn't find it with a quick google search, but the "same prompts" idea wounds pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteMy initial thought was more like "1920's Horror. The PC is a PI hired to track down a stolen diary--GO!" Or, you know, something like that. It's still pretty rough in my head.
Ivan Sorensen ok, yes, the shared world/ongoing game--that's something a bit different, but also something I'd love to try. I know some people have done Play by Posts like that, but I've never had a chance to jump into one of those games.

ReplyDeleteI love play by post, and solo games scratch some of that itch. They also don't have the issue of other people flaking out or the game losing steam. I'm really interested in ways to bring the social aspects and shared creativity from pbp to spice up solo games.
ReplyDeleteI'm also thinking about ways to make pbp more tight and sustainable, but that's another topic.
I'd love to try out a pbp variation. I've tried some pbp, but they've never really worked. They often get bogged down in minutiae (everyone running around asking villagers questions), combat getting wonky and taking weeks to resolve a single fight, or just bad timing/lack of steam. I know I'm guilty as the next man--there are weeks where I'm pretty flexible, and can post often, but then other times when I can post rarely.
ReplyDeleteA PBP where I don't need a GM to resolve combat or answer basic questions, where I can post as often as I want (or don't want), and yet still be part of a shared universe sounds pretty dang cool. Keep me in mind if you ever get that game setup.
I have a lot to say about pbp, but I'll leave that for another thread.
ReplyDeleteThis might be a good way to help people unfamiliar with solo play get their feet wet.
ReplyDeleteI'm down!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like fun...I would be interested...
ReplyDeleteDid you read my Legends & Truth framework by any chance (in the new Shared category)? The basic premise is a shared world where everyone can use everyone else's characters, adding to each other's legends, but each solo game is its own Truth. And I'm explaining badly but it's like 42 degrees where I'm typing so ha.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I want to play The Beast. But detectives are fun. I'm more into hard-boiled 30s than mannered 20s, though. Who doesn't love mysteries, though?
Create and set Quill scenarios for each other and post the results ;)
ReplyDeleteAlto Dizi I did, and it sounds really appealing. I just don't think I quite get all the things you talked about there, but would love to give it a shot!
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering where to share this. We could do it here, through our blogs, or maybe on https://www.rpgsolo.com/

Sounds interesting. As for format, I would recommend a g+ group, because people could post to one central location (but I can't participate, so my suggestion is just a suggestion).
ReplyDeleteA few of us solo'd in a shared world and ran it in a g+ group: The Chronicles of Aquilaea
The idea was to share the setting, where people complete stories when they could. These stories created new material that other people could draw on. We did some great world building and had a few stories.
Assuming it's ok with the admins, we were thinking of just doing a core thread here in this group, to make it easier for people to jump in or just follow along if they wish. (for some reason +Alex Yari doesn't bring up the community owner...)
ReplyDeletePaging Alex Yari .
ReplyDeleteTodd Rokely Sometimes G+ wants you to have a person circled before you can tag them.
I'm just imagining that It might get confusing to track all the different stories in one single comment thread, but I have no issues if you guys want to do it here. :)
ReplyDeleteIf it gets confusing to organize the stories, you might consider posting your stories in separate posts, and using the #hashtag function to identify the gameworld. Just throwing out ideas.
I'm interested to see how it turns out and how the inevitable clashes in vision are worked out.
To be honest, I think a separate community, site or forum makes more sense.
ReplyDeleteAlex Yari That was my thought, too! Do a single thread for discussion/q&a/calling out new APs and do the APs themselves wherever people felt like it (outside of that base thread). The idea of L&T is to incorporate those vision clashes in a way that's actually cool, like mythology.
ReplyDeleteAlso, wanted to mention that we discussed it a bit more in the post in the Shared gaming section earlier today. Just to bring everything together a little (since I posted like half a novel over there, hahaha).
Alto Dizi Can you provide a link to Legends and Truth?
ReplyDeleteYes! The other thread is here on G+ in this community in the Oracle Driven Group Play folder.
ReplyDeleteEdit with hopefully a link to the other thread: https://plus.google.com/u/0/104865349518950182316/posts/dRXG3kFVnxh?sfc=true
