Solo Experiment—Shared World

Solo Experiment—Shared World

I’d like to invite everyone to participate in an experiment in Solo Role Playing. The core idea is that each of us will be running our own games, in our own way, but we will be part of a larger world that can overlap with each other. It’s, essentially, an attempt to mix Solo RPing with Play by Post, hopefully to gain the strength of both. We have a shared genre and a shared initial "hook", but from there the game spins out into any direction we desire. Different games might cross over, but do not need to. (we’ll be using the Legend & Truth idea that Alto Dizi came up with for this.)

• The genre is Sci-Fi (thanks again to everyone who voted!)
• Characters can be anything: criminals, psychic knights, mech pilots, rebels, etc.
• The setting is deliberately vague—there’s FTL, and a number of planets. There’s some aliens and some broad government(s?), but the exact situation will vary based on your preferences.
• Use any game system you like, as well as any GM Emulator. It’s your game, after all!
• Post your AP’s where you like. But, please post a link on this thread, so we can all follow along. You don’t have to do an AP, but hopefully it’ll be fun. When you post, please use the following hashtag: #SharedSciFi
• Your story is the only “canon” story—how much, if any, of others stories you choose to add to your game is entirely up to you.

To help get us going, I used a random Cyberpunk adventure generator and got the following: “The main character must [Fight] [Technician], at [Entertainment District], but have to contend with [Trap] while being confronted by [Corporation].” Interpret it, use, and abuse it as you see fit…

The shared element comes from Alto’s concept, called “Legend & Truth.” It’s a fairly simple system for facilitating crossovers. If someone else has a cool character you want to show up in your story, you get to borrow them. If you’re both doing a public AP, then you’re allowing others to steal your characters and mangle them beyond all recognition.

And, yes, mangled they will be. It’s part of the fun :)

If you’re private, just make sure to tell the original creator what, supposedly, happened in your game with the character.

‘Cause, that’s the thing. Your story is the “Truth.” Their story is merely “Legend”—word on the street, rumors and innuendo whispered in late night bars. Legends are the key—if/when an element of your Legend comes into play, you get a Bonus (“bennie”/”fate point”/whatever your system calls it). Until you use that point, their other story is just Legend. Once you use it though, it takes on elements of the Truth.

Alto’s original explanation can be found here: https://exposit.github.io/katamoiran/img/posts/2016-12-06/LegendTruthQuickstart_v2.pdf

Also, use the community as an Oracle! If you’re sneaking into an abandoned warehouse, and don’t know what’s behind that door—ASK. Let’s see what we can all up with, and how our shared universe takes shape!

As for “how often should I post?” Don’t worry about it—whenever you feel like it. This isn’t a play by post game where you’re waiting for others to respond, even if your sharing characters. You may only update occasionally, while someone else seems to be posting daily. Any way works--this is all meant to be fun!

Game on!

  1. I'll definitely get into this over the weekend.
Still has to sort out exactly what I want to do.

Thanks for getting the ball kicked off.

  3. I am totally in -- I'm going to use Ghost/Echo and I expect my character(s) to be mangled in all the best ways by you all. Wish me luck in keeping to a schedule of just a scene or two between check-ins!

  4. I'll be in in some form or another. Will probably be using a hack of Trollbabe (they have a Bladerunner one so it's easy to re skin).

  5. I may do something a bit more wargame/rpg crossover oriented.

  6. I missed the vote, but yay scifi! I have no idea what I'm doing here with solo RPG play.

  7. Mischa Krilov good way to learn is through some of the Actual Play reports. Best way is to grab an emulator and give it a whirl!

  8. Ok, first AP is up on my blog. More a prologue than anything else. I'll probably make a separate post for it since it's also a Ghost/Echo ap! If anyone reads it, my question is... "What (or who) is the girl?"

  9. Hm... Not sure what system to use. Might use Mythic's system.

  10. Alto Dizi I don't know myself, but I got these answers from a cut up Bladerunner script:

    "A killer that leaves"
    "Artificial"
    "Paraphysical abilities"
    "The Einstein me"
    "Sits on shitstorm"
    "Of the corporation"

Roll 1d6 twice, pick two or ignore as you see fit!
