I've been lurking for quite a while, and never really worked up the gumption to actually try solo role-playing. Currently, I'm working at a job that gives me quite a bit of downtime during my shift, depending on the day. So I was hoping if there were any recommendations for a system with quick character creation, small character sheet, and simple to play. Just need something to help pass the time.
Mitchell Penrod-Davidson Something you didn't mention is your level of comfort with ANY RPG system. Have you played before with a group? If so, which system(s) did you use? Did you like it/them? Were you accustomed to sandbox-style play, or more railroaded adventures/modules? Had you ever GM'ed before? If so, did you enjoy it, or were you happier role-playing a character?
ReplyDeleteFor example, I only played RPGs (mainly D&D B/X) back in the '80s when I was in my late pre-teens, and never thought about it again until recently. I liked playing a character, but there were so many rules to memorize, and my only experience with a DM was sub-par (hopefully he's not reading this group!), so our play was mostly us-vs-DM, railroaded by adventures such as "The Keep on the Borderlands". I came to this group from a solo boardgaming group on BoardGameGeek link, and fell into it head-first, but had a hard time getting my head around the idea of no GM. Everyone here has helped me a TON!
There are many options, as you can tell from all of the great posts above this one, but more detail on previous experiences will really help this group narrow down your choices to what you'd enjoy the most.
Welcome to the group!
Miso is great for a more Story focused game.
ReplyDeleteTiny Solitary Solider is very simple (probably too simple as a stand alone system).
tinysolitarysoldiers.blogspot.de - Solo RPG?!
Four Against Darkness is a solitairy dungeon crawl, but a bit of book keeping.

Dan Davis I've only played in a few online campaigns that all suffered the same fate. Outside of that, I live in a rural area where there aren't any groups around. As for comfort level, I'm willing to give anything a try.
