How do you go about creating npc's and enemies for solo play? This is the first real roadblock for me, do I need to fully stat out every enemy and npc for every encounter? Also, how do you guys go about dungeon crawling solo? Are there any dungeon crawling programs I can use? I'm using GURPS btw.

  1. I swear by UNE, but for quick NPCs I just roll 2 random personality traits from a list of 1000 I found on the net somewhere (or rather, I have Excel do it for me and just cut-and-paste into my notes).

I never stat any skill or attribute I don't immediately need, unless I have access to a large stash of pre-made stats or a generator. Even then I leave some things blank and fill them in as needed, either by interrogating the Oracle, rolling a random value, or simply assigning what I feel is called for (I've got years of GMing experience, though, so this is second nature for me).

Generic stats for guards, merchants, etc. are easy enough to come by. If you feel the guard encounters start to get samey, you can always modify the values on the fly. I'm partial to rolling 2 dice, adding the first and subtracting the second from the score. Using d6s, this gives you a potential range of +5 to -5, though most results will be closer to the baseline.

I use the Scarlet Heroes urban/wilderness/dungeon tables for all sorts of games, D&D-based and otherwise. All you really need do is redefine the difficulty levels to fit your game system, and pick appropriate stats for enemies & trap damage.
