Truth tables that resolve yes/no questions are often referred to as "oracles" here. So how about calling things like Rory's Story Cubes, the Mythic Event table, or any of the other abstract idea generators "muses"? Seems to me like some combination of oracle and muse are essential to the solo toolkit.
I tend to think of Rory's as prompts, and Mythic as another Oracle.
ReplyDeleteI like the Oracle/Muse definitions :)
ReplyDeleteMine seem to all be set to Melpomene...
ReplyDeleteI've seen them called "sparks". Muses is better though. Fits with the Greco-Roman motiff better.
ReplyDeleteIt's really akin to divination or cleromancy. Casting lots, reading bones, and "divining" their meaning (from our imaginations rather than from some supernatural source). I suppose, engaging in this practice, you become the "oracle" when you interpret the dice to answer a question. Perhaps we should call them "bones" :-P
