matt jackson Hey Matt, I am also in the middle of another playtest. This time in a Star Wars setting which also features vehicle combat :-) For vehicle combat I roll a dice pool consisting of Body, Mind and Cliche (if usable) vs. Body, Mind and Cliche (if usable) of the opponent. Every vehicle has it's own hitpoint pool, from which HP are deducted on a hit. I really like the "best of set" conflict resolution, however, once you hit three to four dice that you roll, the chances of rolling a 6 are pretty high on both sides, resulting in a lot of draw rounds, which I don't find exciting. Therefore I am considering the Risus "Goliath rule": If both sides have the same single highest die, the side that rolled fewer dice scores the hit. So 6, 6, 5 would lose against 6, 1 since both parties rolled a 6 but one side only rolled two dice. This rule gives weak opponents a fighting chance. The round would only be a draw, if both sides rolled the same number of dice.
I like that idea for vehicle combat. I just got done with a session of sci-fi bounty hunting that REFUSED to grant me a real fight until I was flying away, and I just kinda fudged a "Mind" roll to blast some enemy starfighters as I escaped.
Seriously. You see why I wound up tripping him up, hoping he'd yield, and then jumping on the noncombat solution that presented itself.
ReplyDeleteThe old man had disappeared when I went to thank him, but that was End of Session and not worth an entire picture for one line on the 3rd page. :D
How do you pronounce so1um? Sew-lum? Sew-ium? Sow-one-um?
ReplyDeleteI've been saying "sew-lum", as if the 1 is an L.

ReplyDeleteI got close to that, but the "sneaking through ventilation ducts and kidnapping the deserter at gunpoint" angle actually worked out pretty fun.
ReplyDeleteI'm a few rolls into one that's gonna feature bloody axes and dying orcs regardless of what the dice say, though. :D
Is there a PDF of the so1um rpg anywhere? Or the actual rules in a blog post?
ReplyDeleteMaybe pin a post to the collection with the Drive folder containing all releases, that way us play(test)ers can find it easily?
ReplyDeleteYes, since it is now updated to .45, soon to be .5?
