Happy new year fellow solo gamers.
Another day, another adventure: Join me as I test out the Apocalypse World engine and combine it with Sophia Brandt's Miso RPG for a test drive in the familiar Star Wars universe.

Nick Riggs Hi Nick, in my understanding the different outcomes generated by the AW engine relate to degrees of success for the task at hand whereas Miso determines the narrative direction of the adventure as a whole.
ReplyDeleteExample from my actual play:
Let's assume during the drop-in the option B had won (severe weather). I would then make a check with 2d6+Dex to try to correct my course and soften my fall.
Depending on that roll I would suffer more or less severe consequences:
Success: I manage to correct my course and land softly.
Problem: I manage to correct my course but injure my ankle during the landing and take some damage.
Failure: I fail to correct my course, have to cut of some equipment in order to survive the fall and injure my ankle during the landing.
In other words: While task resolution certainly has a narrative impact on the development of the story, that impact is limited. Miso has a greater narrative impact in determining the overall development of the adventure.
That's why I use both systems together.
I wouldn't have any problem with Option A being the 10+ result, B being the 7-9 result and C being the 6- result. Or some other arrangement. But if you're having good results then keep doing what you're doing!
ReplyDeleteI've actually been noodling with the AW mechanic for solo narrative resolution lately. I think it has a lot of potential in that direction. (sorry if not making sense, have cold)
ReplyDeleteMore inspired by Simple World, though.
