I always have trouble coming up with characters with whom I have a strong attachment. Strong attachment = motivation for playing to find out. Therefore, I tend to use the same characters.
pretty much always the same character(s) for me, though I sometimes switch focus to a cohort, hireling, quest giver, henchman, buddy, etc, but I tend to switch focus back.
some cohorts stay around (the ones whose characters I like, whether they're a good trope or an actually interesting character). most of them are probably just a favored trope though.
I always play one-shot sessions, so it's rare for me to continue adventures unless I feel like they need more closure.
