Recently, I have played several games with Chain Reaction 2015, a free solo-friendly skirmish system by THW. I plan to use this rule-set in the future, adding a few simple custom rules to use my beloved toy robots together with the usual crappy army men. I want to add some role-playing, or maybe story-telling, linking the scenarios together, but I am still undecided on how to do it. Maybe, I will just go freeform, with a random generator (e.g. GameMaster Apprentice's cards) and a binary oracle (FU dice). Among the stuff I have seen, the closest to what I am thinking of is Platoon Forward, a generic campaign supplement by TooFatLardies. This allows to generate events and character interactions between skirmishes. But I am not sure I am willing to go through the complexity of pages and pages of tables.

  1. Chris Stieha Thank you for your kind words! :-)
I haven't looked at Platoon Forward in a while. Here is what I could remember quickly skimming through the book. It is made of:

    1) A character campaigns system, that basically helps add trait personalities to skirmishing figures (such as motivation, combat attitude, relationships with other PCs)

    2) A scenario generation system. This sections is very well done, with seventeen different scenario cards that tell you how to randomly set up a specific scenario (e.g. Defense against a Flank Attack). From my point of view, it has the drawback to be focused on Platoon-level operations (while I play at squad level at most, with a maximum of about eight figures per side).

    3) The Events section. This includes random events during an encounter, but the part I would be more interested in are the Post Game Events section, with things like the Battalion Commander asking that a report joins the next mission of the squad, or a PC being noticed and getting friends (or enemies) in high places.

As Ivan Sorensen said, one can easily pick which parts to use and which to ignore.

  2. Fabian Khalil Of course I know MiSo! Sophia Brandt was so kind to credit me for feedback on an early version :) That's a very attractive option to me, leaving all the cruchiness to the fights...
