It's been almost 5 months since my last game, and as much as I've tried to get a group together again, there's just been too much schedule conflict to do anything.

Enter solo play

So, I've decided that, since I simply cannot get a group together, I might as well play with by myself. I've printed out a copy of the Epic GM Emulator, with the "chapter system" attached for story structure, and I'm using the tables from Instant Game as my idea generator. I didn't pick a game system... but surprisingly, that really isn't an issue.

...

So far, I'm in a graveyard with a "deviant" undertaker. The undertaker has some hired muscle, too, but they're all being held captive by a demon. The undertaker is trying to negotiate their release. Our goal is to get to ruins, and retrieve a mysterious spiritual artifact that will somehow help defeat the demon.

...

I'm still struggling with the concept of solo play, but I seem to have had some really good rolls for creating a supernatural adventure. I'm not really sure what to do next, but I'm having fun trying to figure all of this out.

  1. It sounds like a lot of fun so far. Keep us posted on how you make out. I am never quite as adept at playing solo myself as I am at reading other peoples reports, alas.

  2. "Is the hired muscle more than one person?"

    No, but...

... She's strong enough for two.

  3. One of the perks of this group and others like it is that you can have your solo adventures and an audience too, if you are so inclined. For some folks, that makes it seem less of a waste of time when their creative efforts can be appreciated.

  4. You can also ask questions here if you're not quite grokking Mythic. It isn't always straightforward.

  5. Suddenly, ninjas!

The undertaker was able to negotiate the release of the hired muscle, but only if I duel insane ninjas. Eek!

I suppose now would probably be a good time to figure out which game system to use, yeah? That way, I have a system to work out combat.

  6. I had decided that that was a good stopping point, drawing a close to Chapter One Scene One. The Chapter System says that Scene Two should introduce a new element of opposition, and the ninjas seem like the perfect fit for that. The opposition is supposed to be unrelated to the element introduced in Scene One (the demon), but I don't think that's necessary, or even really desirable. I've decided that the ninjas are working with the demon; perhaps they summoned it for their bidding. (The fools.)

I've put some thought into where I want to go with this. I was lucky, in that the story generated thus far could easily fit into a variety of genres. I could have gone with OSR swords and sorcery, or I could have used White Wolf horror. I thought about an urban fantasy, but ultimately decided this was a story of pulp supernatural. I even have a character I could use: Lance "Lucky" Coyne, Private Eye.

The issue now is just a matter of what system to use. I don't really have any systems that handle that sort of pulp well. What to do...

Kevin Shinners  Thanks, but I'm not using Mythic. I'm using the Epic emulator. In addition, I'm also using the Chapter System to create a narrative structure.

  7. Some use the GM emulator to resolve combat. That seems to be the main method of FU. Freeform Universal (FU) is pretty universal system and uses a flexible modifier system. It's also a 1d6 system like Epic - which FU has an identical alternative resolution chart.. It could maybe handle some of the details like combat, modifiers, and skills

I haven't tried the chapter system. I use an escalating dice & random plot system to figure out the chapter system.

Part of solo play seems to be being part story writer by interpreting results.

I hope your gaming works out well.
