The Isle of Darastrix, Part 2: Out of The Frying Pan and Into The Woods

The Isle of Darastrix, Part 2: Out of The Frying Pan and Into The Woods

Our trio of adventurers managed to escape the flaming fortress without any more burns. The barrels of oil in the other room sure enough made a nice fireball and accelerated the conflagration but the room was far enough away from the entrance that it didn't really pose any danger to the party.

With nothing else keeping them there, the party ran through the midnight storm towards a nearby small wooded area to the southwest. Everyone was in a bad way and they definitely needed a long rest. Sleeping out in the rain was going to be difficult and would have required me to roll constitution saves on everyone to make sure the slept through it. So I had Ssedt use his survival skills to try to build a camouflaged lean-to so everyone would be out of the rain and get advantage to sleeping stealthily.

Well Ssedt wasn't exactly on his A-game and wasted an hour gathering useless branches and shrubbery that made a fairly obvious lean-to fall apart shortly after it was completed. An irritated Zeffira decided she would give it a try. Hers was much more stable and camouflaged, but unfortunately the time it took her to put it gave some random bandits, attracted by the flaming fortress, time to ambush them.

They weren't stealthy enough to get the jump on the party but they did position themselves pretty well; two pairs in two separate copses of trees. Ssedt handled one pair and Krieger and Zeffira took on the other two. Krieger being uncomfortably close to falling unconscious took to the trees and used magic missiles to wear them down while Zeffira rushed up just short of melee range and let loose her frost breath.

Unfortunately it wasn't enough to take them both down and Zeffira fell to their crossbow bolts the next round. Ssedt and Krieger managed to finish them off pretty easily, though, but not before Zeffira failed a death save.

Ssedt and Krieger dragged her back to the lean-to and they had to wait four hours before she regained consciousness. The camouflaged lean-to turned out to be a life saver as they all managed to roll really well on their stealth checks.

They awoke around noon and the storm finally died down to a light drizzle. Remembering that they forgot to check the bodies for any loot, Ssedt and Krieger went to go see what they had on them only to find that the bodies were gone. Looking around he discovered two pairs of goblin tracks along with signs of the bodies being dragged leading to the northeast.

The party agreed that it probably wasn't worth going after them for a few scimitars and a fistful of silver, so they decided to trek east towards the town of Yoweth Skjall where they hoped to find food, rest, and perhaps someone looking to hire some adventurous types to do an odd job for them.

So they spent the rest of the day traveling without incident, reaching the outskirts just before sunset.

  2. That map looks great!  Did you just start drawing or did you use some toolkit to help you design it and figure out the layout?

  3. This is the first city map I've drawn by hand. I usually use paint.net or something similar to just draw it using a mouse but I figured paper and pencil would be easier. It is easier to get the detail I want but it's a lot harder on the hand, especially since I haven't drawn anything by hand in a long time.
