Has anyone used Mythic GME paired with another RPG for solo play? Did you just pick your favorite system in general, or did you pick one based on the needs of solo play?
Edit: Mostly asking because I did character generation using Shadow of the Demon Lord, and my gut reaction to my finished sheet was that it seems like way more detail than I want to track. Searching for the right level of detail.
I've never used Mythic at all, but I've heard of people doing this with good results. Apparently retro clones are a good fit, as is Dungeon World.
ReplyDeleteThat's usually what I use Mythic for. I don't pick out a favorite system per se, but rather pick out systems to try out via Mythic.
ReplyDeleteI've used Mythic with several different systems. Mythic can handle any system you like but I found that for myself, an at least somewhat simpler system allowed me to better keep the action moving. I settled on Savage Worlds with Mythic. With something heavier, I had too many things I had to track and tended to lose the story. I've also leaned toward fewer, more capable PCs to limit what I need to track.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy light systems for the same reasons you have discovered (plus, I just really like lite systems, what can I say?). I've enjoyed FU, Lasers & Feelings and it's derivatives, and World of Dungeons.
ReplyDeleteDone this with an early draft of Magical Burst, Fate Accelerated, and Lasers and Feelings. Got future plans to do the same with Epyllion and some other light systems.
ReplyDeleteI've done this with Mage, Apocalypse World and Dungeon World, and I'm just now working on adapting Numenera. After this, there'll be All Flesh Must Be Eaten or Witchcraft.
ReplyDeleteIt's not hard, really. Mythic gives you a method for filling in a lot of details, and the particular system gives you the conflict resolution framework. The trickiest part for me is in setting up the conflicts and environments without pre-planning. Using AW, DW and Numenera as templates, XP rewards haven't been a problem.
Generally I do my favorites/whatever I'm in the mood for. I don't mind tracking details if that's what I'm feeling, and I also don't feel bad about changing my mind halfway through.
ReplyDeleteGenerally, I pick the systems that I want to experience. There seem to be two “schools” of thought, or rather preferences, when it comes to this.
ReplyDeleteSome folks feel like they enjoy a crunchy system, because much of the fun of solo play can come from making contact with the system. Some folks like it lighter and opt for systems like Free Universal RPG (FU for short), especially when it comes to Mythic which is on the crunchier side of Oracles.
If you flip through dieheart.net you'll find a number of actual plays using Mythic GME to simulate the PCs under a variety of rulesets. Also, a great number of solo play resources.
ReplyDeleteI've always used Mythic as an overlay to an existing system
