This is what I want:

This is what I want:

A game inspired by XCOM where you're the leader of a group, organisation or community. Every day in real life, a set time passes in the game and you spend 15 - 30 minutes playing through the content and deal with daily random events like accidents, opportunities, internal conflicts or external threats.

On the long term you're managing resources, planning, training, expanding, upgrading - nothing too fancy though. But the core of the game is the missions. You choose who to send and make "tactical" decisions where you have to gamble with your people's lives, the success of the mission or bonus rewards.

Example:
You've rolled on the mission table and the outcome is that one of your people have been pinned down on a supply raid. You describe how. Based on your people and equipment you have several choices with a probability of success, partial success or failure.

* Retreat and leave them. (100%)
* Use the distraction to grab the supplies, but leave them. (80%)
* Use valuable explosives to blow up the enemy, but it might also destroys vital supplies. (70%)
* etc...

Think FTL without combat or Out there OMEGA.

The setting could be a post apocalyptic Fallout vault, an XCOM clone, New World settlers, space exploration, a criminal organisation and so on.

Do you know if there is anything like this? Or something that could be used as a framework to make a hack.

  1. This is something I've pondered on in the past, and like everything else is in 'the queue'.

Something you might want to take a look at is War Story by Ivan Sorensen.

This is recommended sight unseen but his other work is good so I have no doubt this should stand up too. I've seen him comment it's influenced by Mythic so it should fit in right at home in this group. To make the decision easier it is also fairly cheap at RPGNow et al.

It is basically a narrative skirmish wargame, I'm not sure if miniatures are involved, but Roll20, Maptool and Dungeon Sketch (Android) can cover this angle with no outlay.

The other option is a unified or allied system(s). For example Savage Worlds, or Star Wars Miniature Battles and D6 variant.

Of course if the wargaming side is the more dominant you should look for simple solo wargaming rules, of which there are many, and tack on role-playing elements. Good choices here would be Blasters and Bulkheads, Chain Reaction and Fast and Dirty.

These are just my current thoughts on the tactical part of the game, the other side is a whole different story (and a much longer post I don't have time for now!).

  2. Steven Lincoln War story looks interesting. Wargaming and grids are not my thing, but from what I can tell it doesn't need miniatures or even initiative.

Tactics are at the core of xcom, but it's the character growth and making tough decisions that I want to explore. That's why I put tactics in quotes.
