Question for y'all: What's your favourite format to write Actual Plays in? Do you like the recap style that concisely sums up each session, the novel style that reads like an actual book (sometimes with crunch omitted entirely), or even the screenplay style that focuses on speech and actions? Or another format entirely? What pros/cons do you think the style has?
Bonus question: What's your favourite format to /read/ Actual Plays in?
I hereby cast Summon Greater Discussion.
Hello!
ReplyDeleteWho could resist such a summon :) :) :)
Anyhow, I am all for novel mixed with the crunch. I pondered doing bullet points, but I already don't get to do as much as I want to, so those bullet would never turn into written out tales. Besides, in writing out the story novel-style, I can really envision it much clearer than with the bullet points.
As for reading, I also like that style for it gives me the narration as well as the mechanics so that I can get inspiration and learn from how others use the rules to create the narration.

2 column Side by side - screen play on left rolls and reasoning on the right next to relevant area - written contemporaneously - that way I can't manipulate what fate has in store for me :)
ReplyDeleteThis has been a most informative thread. I LIKE to use a modified screenplay approach with full dialogue, but it takes so long to write that I don't get as much play in. It's about 2/3 of my time spent writing that way. So, a lot of the time I keep minimal notes and just keep playing, but then I don't get as much detail on my actual play records. I'm liking the 2 column idea, and I think I will be trying that to see if I can get enough detail in my notes without spending most of my time writing. Maybe bullet points on one side with mechanics on the other.
