Hey guys, just discovered solo RPG and so far I’m liking what I see. I have a question. I’m looking into Basic Fantasy as my first system but do you guys level your characters and all? If so, do you adjust it to scale better for the solo rpg gamer? Any tips for doing so? Thanks guys.

  1. Try to look at the solo RPG Scarlet Heroes...it has a very clever solution to it, and it is perfect to play OSR systems!

  2. Black Streams: Solo Heroes is the "free" version of the Scarlet Heroes overlay for lone heroes in old-school style games like Basic Fantasy (assuming you're only running one character). The difference is you're not getting the "solo rules" that are in Scarlet Heroes (which are worth the cover charge, IMO).

Look for a YouTube channel called "artichoke dip" (yes, strangely named). He is a solo roleplayer and has several videos on Basic Fantasy.

  3. I always just use whatever XP system is present in the game I am playing. When the XP awards are determined by the GM, I always err on the side of awarding too few XP, and sometimes forget to award them for long stretches of time.

One of the advantages of many OSR games is the absolute metric for earning experience from fighting and treasure. But having just checked, I see that Basic Fantasy has the combat awards, but the rest is supposed to be determined by the DM. My recommedation in this case is to either borrow the 1GP=1XP system from other OSR games in addition to the fighting awards, or develop some sort of goal-based or scene-based alternative. Depending on individual adventures, you might switch back and forth. I have a LotFP game that has alternated between treasure-filled dungeons and lonmg stretches of intrigue and horror with no treasure whatsoever; the former use 1SP=1XP as written, the latter a per-scene award basaed on the (modified) Mythic chaos level, and both use the combat awards as usual.
