I’ve been spending a lot of time playing “OSR” games recently. Thinking about trying something different: Heroquest 2.

I’ve owned Heroquest for eight(?) years and never got around to playing it. Just like Al Qadim. Might do that next month. To get in the spirit of Halloween, I may test run Heroquest with Pathfinder’s Rule of Fear (cheaply available via Humble Bundle at https://www.humblebundle.com/books/pathfinder-worldscape-ultimate-book-bundle).

Anyone with Heroquest experience have supplemental recommendations? I bought HQ: Glorantha (heard it was easier to understand than 2E). Honestly, I never gave HQ2 a try because I couldn’t get the Keywords until recently.

  1. HeroQuest is written in a way which does it no favors. My only reservation about doing this solo is that it seems to really thrive on negotiation and talking about things between the players, which is harder to do on your own. The basic mechanics are simple, but I worry it won't be as satisfying if you only have yourself to riff off of.

  2. Gerard Nerval That was helpful! I can add the Aladdin technique and DW Adventure Builder to my repertoire. With The Covetous Poet’s Adventure Creator and my Story Cubes, I might have something to play today. :)
